Why Adults Watch Animated Family Films
Reasons for why adults enjoy animated family films now more than ever.
560 words with the one word sentence after the title and the two sentence bio. My name is Korey Bell I am a Sophomore/Junior studying English and Film at Regent University. I like writing stories and I do not like long walks on the beach. Remember how the word “family” in the phrase animated family films used to serve as a
synonym for the word kid? In the early days of the animated family film genre, adults had few motives to go see animated family films. The main motives were: being the chauffeur, being the monetary provider and, lastly, being the guardian. Adults would drive their child to the movies, pay for their ticket and monitor the movie to make sure their kids weren’t hearing anything inappropriate and also perform the occasional ear covering exercises. But ever since the early 90’s there has been a shift in the animated family film genre. Now one of the main reasons why a
parent/adults, go see animated family films or AFF’s are to be entertained. What happened to the
animated family film genre that has made it so adults and children are entertained? There are a few arguments that can be made to explain why AFF’s are being seen by an abundant
amount of adults. One reason being the progressive improvements of the animation realm or CGI. According to charts on the Box Office History for Digital Animation Movies, it can be seen that
the number of ticket sales grow exponentially as time goes on and as CGI continues to improve. Another reason explaining why more adults are going to see an AFF is the messages that are being told in AFF’s. One of the big changes is that has broadened the genres viewers is the quality of which they portray the family message. Though the messages may be cliché or lessons we (adults) have learned before, they are presented in a way that grabs and demands our attention while we have a few laughs and eye-opening moments.
Another reason why AFF’s are becoming popular amongst the older generation is because of the growing relationship they have with their audience. Take the Toy Story trilogy for example. As a kid I loved Toy Story not only because of the colorful toys and the adventures they had, but also because I could relate to the toys and their owner Andy. In Toy Story 2 I could relate to the way
Woody felt when he wanted to be loved and wanted and feared becoming unwanted. In Toy
Story 3 I could relate to the feeling of letting go and moving on because of Andy’s graduation; which at the time, happened to be the year of my graduation.
The AFF genre audience has broadened since its primitive years from children to adults. Mainly, because of the way they illustrate a relatable message or lesson that satisfies the understanding and entertainment needs of both the children and the child in the adult. This is why family films like Shrek 2, The Lion King, Finding Nemo and Toy Story 3 are listed in the top 20 All-time
USA Box Office. Animated family films that have the latter discussed characteristics will
continue to entertain adults and children “to infinity and beyond.”
