What should you think about when trying to find your career? You are probably
better at some school subjects than others. These may show strengths that you can use
in your work. A boy who is good at mathematics can use that in an engineering career.
A girl who spells well and likes English may be good at office work. So it is
important to know the subjects you do well in at school. On the other hand, you may
not have any specially strong subjects but your records show a general satisfactory
standard. Although not all subjects can be used directly in a job, they may have
indirect value. A knowledge of history is not required for most jobs but if history is
one of your good subjects you will have learned to remember facts and details. This is
an ability that can be useful in many jobs.
Your school may have taught you skills, such as typing or technical drawing,
which you can use in your work.. You may be good at metalwork or cookery and look
for a job where you can improve these skills. If you have had a part-time job on
Saturdays or in the summer, think what you gained from it. If nothing else, you may
have learned how to get to work on time, to follow instructions and to get on with
older workers. You may have learned to give correct change in a shop, for example.
Just as important, you may become interested in a particular industry or career you
see from the inside in a part-time job.
Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. You may be all
thumbs when you handle tools; perhaps you are a poor speller or cannot add up a
column of figures. It is better to face any weakness than to pretend they do not exist.
Your school record, for instance, may not be too good, yet it is an important part of
your background. You should not be apologetic(认错的) about it but instead
recognize that you will have a chance of a fresh start at work.

Charles Dickens (1812-1870), the great nineteenth century English novelist, was
born near Portsmouth. His father ran heavily into debt and when he was twelve, he
had to go and work in a factory for making boot polish. The only formal education he
received was a two-year schooling at a school for poor children. In fact, he had to
teach himself all he knew. He worked for a time as junior clerk in a lawyer’s office.
After that, he worked as a reporter in the law courts, and later in parliament, for
London newspapers. His career as a writer of fiction began in 1833 with short stories
and essays in periodicals, and in 1837 his comic novel The Pickwick Papers made
him the most popular author at his time in England.
He was a great observer of people and their places because he was attracted by
life and conditions in mid-nineteenth century London. He wrote 19 novels all his life
and in many of them, Dickens gave a realistic picture of all classes of England society,
showing deep sympathy for the poor and unfortunate, exposing the injustice and
inhumanity of the bourgeoisie.
Many of his novels like Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Nicholas Nickleby,
Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities and so on drew attention to the
unsatisfactory social conditions that existed in England over a hundred years ago.
Dickens criticized capitalist society from the point of view of bourgeois
humanism. He wished to see improvement in the living conditions of the poor, but
failed to find any effective means to achieve that end.

From good reading we can derive pleasure, companionship, experience, and instruction. A good book may absorb our attention so completely that for the time
being we forget our surroundings and even our identity. Reading good books is one of the greatest pleasures in life. It increases our contentment when we are cheerful, and lessens our troubles when we are sad. Whatever may be our main purpose in reading,
our contact with good books should never fail to give us enjoyment and satisfaction.
With a good book in our hands we need never be lonely. Whether the characters portrayed are taken from real life or are purely imaginary, they may become our
companions and friends. In the pages of books we can walk with the wise and the
good of all lands and all times. The people we meet in books may delight us either
because they resemble human friends whom we hold dear or because they present
unfamiliar types whom we are glad to welcome as new acquaintances. Our human
friends sometimes may bore us, but the friends we make in books need never weary
us with their company. By turning the page we can dismiss them without any fear of
hurting their feelings. When human friends desert us, good books are always ready to give us friendship, sympathy, and encouragement. One of the most valuable gifts
bestowed by books is experience. Few of us can travel far from home or have a wide
range of experiences, but all of us can lead varied lives through the pages of books. Whether we wish to escape from the seemingly dull realities of everyday life or
whether we long to visit some far-off place, a book will help us when nothing else can. To travel by book we need no bank account to pay our way; no airship or ocean liner or stream-lined train to transport us; no passport to enter the land of our heart's desire. Through books we may get the thrill of hazardous adventure without danger. We can
climb lofty mountains, brave the perils of an Antarctic winter, or cross the scorching sands of the desert, all without hardship. In books we may visit the studios of
八闽教育网-助教,小教,中考,高考,命题,试题,模拟,专题
www.bmjyw.com 八闽教育网 Hollywood; we may mingle with the gay throngs of the Paris boulevards; we may join
the picturesque peasants in an Alpine village or the kindly natives on a South Sea
island. Indeed, through books the whole world is ours for the asking. The possibilities
of our literary experiences are almost unlimited. The beauties of nature, the enjoyment
of music, the treasures of art, the triumphs of architecture, the marvels of engineering,
are all open to the wonder and enjoyment of those who read.
51. Why is it that we sometimes forget our surroundings and even our identity while
reading?
A. No one has come to disturb you.
B. Everything is so quiet and calm around you.
C. The book you are reading is so interesting and attractive.
D. Your book is overdue; you are finishing it at a very fast speed.
52. How would you account for the fact that people like their acquaintances in books
even more?
A. They resemble human friends exactly. B. They are unfamiliar types we like.
C. They never desert us. D. They never hurt our feelings.
53. Which of the following is true?
A. Your wish to visit some far-off place can be realized through the pages of the
books.
B. To escape from the dull realities of everyday life you should take up reading.
C. Books can always help you to live a colourful life.
D. You may obtain valuable experience from reading good books.
54. The word “weary” means ______.
A. “to attract someone’s attention” B. “to distract someone’s attention”
C. “to make someone very tired” D. “to make someone interested”
55. “... the whole world is ours for the asking” implies that ____________.
A. in books the world is more accessible to us
B. we can ask to go anywhere in the world
C. we can make a claim to everything in this world
D. we can make a round-the-world trip free of charge

Most people remember their teachers as some kind of despotic (专制的) person
although it isn’t always the truth. Most of them are quite nice and are always there to
give us a hand when we need one. Not so long ago, you might think teacher was The
Teacher and was almighty (万能的) and the students were there to learn and nothing
else. Now there is some kind of interactivity (相互活动) between the teacher and the students. To my mind, teachers are here to teach us their knowledge and to listen to
what we have to say. Indeed, students aren’t afraid to tell them what they think any
more. However, this doesn’t mean that they don’t control their troops. It’s just
because times and methods have changed. Our teachers are now closer to their
students and have created some kind of soft climate that allows us to be in class
without a feeling of obligation(责任) or what so ever. Nevertheless, we can but notice
that the “power” is still in the teachers’ hands. If something goes wrong it is up to him
or her to react properly and to carry out punishment if it is necessary.

Working Individually or Working in a team
There are basically two ways to get work done. One is to work individually. In
this way, people can decide for themselves when to start work and how to do it.
What’s more, they will be able to learn how to solve problems on their own.
People may also choose to work in a team, where they can learn from each other
and help each other. Besides, they may work out better ways to get work done by
discussion.
Personally, I prefer to work in a team, which offers me a chance to learn how to
get along with others and to share my experiences with them
Modern relationship between teachers and students is much better than that in the
past, which is more relaxing and pleasant, but it doesn’t mean that teachers have lost the power over their students.
Nowadays, getting along well with teachers is much valued than ever before. To
creat a good relationship with teachers, we need to respect them and appreciate their
efforts, while at the same time we need to do our basic responsibilities well, such as
attending class on time, being well prepared for class with completed assignment and
being fully concentrated in class.
Actually, having a good relationship with teachers makes it easier for us to get
along smoothly with our study at school. As far as I am concerned, my teacher was
my good friend, so I would turn to him whenever I had any trouble and he always
gave me a hand timely. It has had a strong effect on my personality, such as being
helpful and considerate, which enables me to grow up healthily. Therefore, good
relationship between teachers and students is worthwhile for everyone to cherish.

M: I know, I know. You don’t think it’s …well, reasonable, do you?
W: I didn’t say that. I mean if you enjoy it, why not? What happened to your old
TV anyhow?
M: It just stopped working last Friday. It was pretty old and didn’t work well. I thought you can afford it. Why not get a new one?
W: It must have been expensive.

W: Yeah, but 50% off what?
M: 2,400 dollars.
W: You spent 1,200 dollars on a TV?
M: It’s got a lot of special features. Look at this remote control.
W: I’m sure. But that’s still a lot of money for a television. I don’t think you watch TV that much.
M: Well, I don’t. Do you think I ought to return it? If I do it within a week of purchase, I can get my money back.
W: Yes. And you know what? I think you ought to read up on TV first and choose the make and model you want before you go to the store. That way, you’ll get

W: You must be Mr. Sellers. I'm Arthur Woo. I'm here to see the apartment you advertised.
M: Oh, nice to see you. Let me get the key. The apartment is on the tenth floor. The previous tenant just moved out yesterday, so we haven't cleaned it yet. Please
ignore the mess. We'll have it ready for oc-cupancy within the week.
W: There's no hurry. My lease in my present place won't expire until the end of the month.
M: The elevator is self-service and it operates twenty—four hours a day. There's
also a stairway at the other end of the lobby. Here we are. Apartment 1005. (They
enter.) This is the living room, dining room combination. Here's the kitchen. It's small,
but fully equipped. The refrigerator is new, and the stove and the microwave oven are
less than a year old.
W: It's nice. So this is the bathroom. And that must be the bedroom.
M:Yes. And there's a walk—in closet.
W: Is there air conditioning?
M: Yes, there's central air conditioning and heating. The thermos is in the living room.
W: When is the rent due? And how much security deposit do you require?
M: The rent is due no later than the fifth of the month, but we prefer to have it on the first. We ask that you leave a month's rent as a deposit. It will be returned to you
at the end of your lease.
W: Good. I like the apartment, Mr. Sellers. You can show me the lease.
听第3段对话,回答第7至第9三个小题。
W: Hi, Hugh! Can you tell me how it happened?
M: Sure, I was mountain climbing in New Hampshire in 1982. Suddenly, the weather became really bad. There was lots of snow and we couldn’t see anything. We

below zero. We didn’t have any equipment or food.
W: So what happened! I guess someone found you, right?
M: Yes, but we were very sick. I couldn’t move my legs because of the cold. I
spent 2 months in the hospital. The doctors removed my legs.
W: Right. So you lost your legs. But you wanted to try your best to stay active.
M: That’s right. In fact, I decided to make some new legs for myself. I realized
that no one has to be physically disabled. We can use modern technology to help us.
W: And you built these great new legs. Can you go mountain climbing again?
M: Yes, I can. In fact, these are better than climbing shoes. The spring design
means that they are much more powerful.
听第4段对话,回答第10至第12三个小题。
M: What’s the worst place you’ve ever stayed in?
W: The worst place I’ve ever stayed in? That’s easy. It was called the White
Horse Hotel, a couple of years ago. It had been recommended in a guide book so we
thought it would be all right and so we just took the room without checking it out.
Anyway, the hotel looked really quite nice, the reception and everything, it was quite
expensive.
M: So what was wrong with it then?
W: Well, to begin with, when we went to bed, the bed was awful, we just rolled
into the middle, and it was extremely soft. And the other thing was the bathroom. The
smell was awful.
M: Yuk! Couldn’t you have opened the windows?
W: Well, we tried but we were on quite a busy road, you see, so it was noisy too.
M: Oh, right.
W: Anyway, the following morning we couldn’t get away fast enough, even
though we’d said we wanted to stay for two nights.
M: And did you complain or anything?
W: I did, yes, I wrote a letter to the manager, and do you know, they offered us a
free extra night!
听第5段对话,回答第13至第15三个小题。
M: Hi, Anna, I haven’t seen you around the lab lately. Are you still working
here?
W: Oh, hi George. I am still working for Professor Johnston, at least as much as I
can. The trouble is that I’m so busy with my own classes that I don’t have enough
time for her lab work.
M: Do you have much to do?
W: Well, not too much at the moment. I’m trying to pull together my data from
my work last summer. Professor Johnston is giving a paper about the project in two
months, and she needs to include my final results. It’s not too much work, but I have
got this deadline so that’s why I am here.
M: Are you going to continue working with Professor Johnston next semester?

W: I hope so. I really like the work, and next semester I’ll have more time. She
has said that she’d like me to continue with the project.
M: Sounds good. Hey. I’ve got to get back to my own work now, but it was good
meeting you. I hope I’ll see you around more often.
W: OK. I hope I’ll see you too. Bye for now.

Clerk: 3418564. Can I help you?
Steve: Yes. I’d like to order a bicycle I’ve seen in your catalogue. With a 22-inch frame.
Clerk: Bicycle? Well, we have three different models. Could you quote the
reference number, please?
Steve: I’ll just have a look. Here it is number AD58402.
Clerk: All right. I’ll just key that in. That’s the turning model at $ 185.
Steve: No, wait a moment. I want the sports model.
Clerk: If you check, sir, you’ll see that the sports model one is $ 249.50. The
reference number is AD58412.
Steve: It’s the sports model I want. Will you take the order down?
Clerk: Sure. Could I have your name and address? Or do you have account
number?
Steve: I might have, but I can’t tell you what the number is right now.
Clerk: We can look it up at this end. It doesn’t matter. Wound you give me your
name and address, then?
Steve: Yes, it’s Steve Brown of 31 Green Road, Euston Center in New York.
Clerk: And how would you like to pay? By check or by credit card?
Steve: I’ll pay by check as usual. When can I expect it?
Clerk: It should reach you within three weeks. Let us know if it doesn’t. We’ll
enclose the bill with the bicycle.
Steve: OK. Thank you.
