"Montblanc house", a three-storey dwelling
with a small salon in a quiet residential area of
Japan. Enclosed by three neighbouring buildings,
the design seeks to generate pockets of open space
that maintain its privacy and views toward the
mountains despite its tight site.
Featuring a deep inclined roof, the house is
playfully over-sized in its architectural elements,
manipulating the scale of windows through large
voids in the exterior shell. The openings-five in
all-establish a direct connection to the outside,
providing abundant natural light and air, as well
as views to the scenery. Devoid of any glazing, the
boundary between inside and outside is rendered
ambiguous, creating unconventional outdoor space
that is partially sheltered such as the roof terrace.
With the interior volume set apart from the
exterior shell, private moments are created in
the interstitial space: on the ground floor, a small
garden is accommodated next to the dining room;
two outdoor terraces on the second level further

integrates the living space with the exterior.
Five large openings in the inclined roof bring
sufficient natural light and air, as well as scenery,
into the building. The windows, as "voids", lacking
sashes, have a totally different scale from the
windows of the neighboring houses. That's why
there is a wondrous scale around the area as if the
model had been enlarged.
Can we create a place for such experiences in a
crowded residential area?
One encounters "outside" at various points
as you walk upstairs since the semi-exterior
spaces are connected and gently covered with a
large luminous roof. I hope to create a diversity
of "exteriors" with the various angles and heights
of the site, appropriately hiding away the views
from the neighboring sites, as well as a sense of the
neighboring houses' existence.□

Comments
QING Feng: The prototype of the double slope roof
house is transformed into a coating covering the
functional core comprised of a stack of rectangular
blocks. It is another interpretation of Robert Venturi's
concept of "Decorated Shed". It is interesting that
the architect makes full use of the gap between the
decoration and the shed to create a series of areas
between the indoor and the outdoor, which is obviously
of higher value than the post-modern surface painting.
In contrast, the space and facade of the shed is handled
in a slightly stiff manner. Obviously, complexity
and contradiction are the notions that the architects
disagree, and even overly repels.
WANG Fangji: In a scene that most of the surrounding
houses are designed with the main lighting and viewing
side toward the quiet small street in the southeast, the
building is designed with an enclosed side facing toward
the street, shifting the main lighting and viewing side
toward the neighboring east-west orientation, this
arrangement is really a bit unexpected. As there will be
a salon under the residential building, this arrangement
may avoid the exposure of large openings in the living
part to the yard with slight public sense, and show a
kind of frontality in this side. Most of views inside the
building are directed to the sky, directing the focus to
the rooftop that can silently see the cityscape operated
by the architect carefully while showing a sense of
closure.
