Iconic Darwin Finch Genome Sequenced in
Genome 10K International Collaboration
Scientists have sequenced the genome of one of the iconic
Galapagos finches first described by Charles Darwin. The
genome of the medium ground finch (Geospiza fortis) is
among the first of a planned 100 genomes of vertebrate
species to be sequenced and released by an international
collaboration between the Genome 10K project and BGI.

The First Ant Methylomes Uncover the
Relationship between DNA methylation and
Caste Differentiation in Ants
An international team led by New York University School of
Medicine and BGI has completed the first genome-wide and
single-nucleotide resolution DNA methylomes of two ant
species: Camponotus floridanus and Harpegnathos saltator.
It provides new insights into the relationship between
epigenetic regulation and caste differentiation of ants and
also shed light on the epigenetic mechanism involved in
social behavior, neurobiology and life-span of other animals.
The latest study was published in Current Biology, one sister
journal of Cell. More
Chinese Scientists Successfully Crack the
Genome of Diploid Cotton
The international research team led by Chinese Academy of
Agricultural Sciences and BGI has completed the genome
sequence and analysis of a diploid cotton-- Gossypium
raimondii. The cotton genome provides an invaluable
resource for the study and genetic improvement of cotton
quality and output, and sheds new lights on understanding
the genetic characteristics and evolutionary mechanism
underlying cotton and its close relatives. The study was
published online in Nature Genetics. More
BGI Partners with the University of Birmingham
The University of Birmingham and BGI have announced a
major joint initiative in environmental and human health
research. The new venture will provide a world-class
research and training centre on Birmingham’s campus that
integrates state-of-the-art approaches in molecular
biology, including DNA sequencing, metabolomics and
bioinformatics. Research will focus on organism responses
to environmental change through to disease susceptibility
and treatment. More

Personalized Medicine: Better Healthcare for the Future
The 'one size fits all' approach to medical research and development may have benefited the widest number of
potential patients. However, the environmental, genetic and other biological factors play an important role in the
development of diseases, which can alter the ways that diseases are diagnosed, drugs are developed, and the
matching of therapeutic cells and tissues to patients. The past several years have witnessed a revolution in the
understanding of health and disease, brought on in large part by the sequencing of the human genome and the
generation of a map of human genetic variation. Personalized medicine is designed to provide the right diagnosis and
treatment to the right patient at the right time, and to improve upon 'reactive' medical diagnosis by predicting
treatment response or preventing disease before symptoms appear. Already there are abundant stories and reports
as below demonstrated that personalized medicine pointed new way toward better healthcare for the future.
