Dear admission office of Shanghai International Studies University Dear admission office of Shanghai International Studies University: Before greeting, I?d like to appreciate you giving the chance for me to display the ego with written language. Some people say that children and parents play complementary roles in daily life. Definitely, for me. As a boy whose father is a National First-Class Architect and mother is a accountant, although I?m confident of my rational thought, I seem not to have completely inherited the ability to make overall arrangements from my father and the instinctive intuitivism to digits from my mother. Instead, I have the capacity to master linguistic notations. When I was a junior school student, like many contemporary peers, I have great affection for anime and British dramas. With time passing by, I came to find that I had less and less need for Chinese captions. Saving the time to read them, I can notice more details of scene in the drama, and have a better understand of the world view which the director and author want to convey to me. Later, I began to learn Japanese during the summer holidays when I just graduated from my junior school, finally joined a little Fansub, wishing to serve more people who have common interest with me. My English and classical Chinese gained unexpected progress after I learned Japanese. When memorizing katakana, it enlarged my vocabulary and when learning Chinese characters in Japanese, it enabled me to know about the classical characters. For instance, “yu” means “jiaoluo” and “shun” means “langan”. Simple as they are, they let me feel the sweetness of the blend of languages in person. The matter which made me fall in love with SISU was interpretation test. So innocent was I when I?m a pupil that I wanted to become a teacher. But I was shocked by interpreters? excellent performance at press conferences the first time I saw them. Quick response, accurate words, and fluent sentences, how cool they are! I signed for basic interpretation test as soon as I knew it. For a grade seven student, not having bilingual education, it was quite difficult at the beginning. But the idea of giving up never occurred to me, for I was sure of what I want to be in the future. Eventually I stood at the gate of SISU. Now I can still remember both nervous and excited feelings in my heart when I took that step, carrying a bag, a small radio on my hand. Uh… I?m sorry to say that apart from the Multi-Media Classroom and examination room near some shade of trees, the facility which impressed me most was the two storey canteen. It was in the canteen that I did my final revision before formal test. When I performed well, leaving there with a smile, the dream had rooted at the bottom of my heart: I would be back here five years later. Besides, I want to talk about literature translation. I was exposed to Haruki Murakami and Kyouichi Katayama„s masterpieces after I entered senior high school. Sequently, I knew him, a respectable translator, Lin Shaohua. Reading his works, I was more and more respectful to literature translators. It?s a miraculous job, because they make the life of the original reborn in another semiotic system by their own approach of understanding. It?s also a sacred job. Lin instructed us with his works that literature translation is not only the match of grammar, vocabulary and type of writing style, but also is the mate of aesthetic feelings and the connect between planes of souls. Out of my young age and imitation of idol, I tried to translate 《1984》after I read it from A to Z twice. However, increasing works after I become class monitor and awareness of my inadequate ability, I gave up halfway, though I still enjoyed the procedure. “One should speak with contents, acting with personality.” I choose SISU, and hope I can go further and further on the road of language with the help of its school motto: Integrity, Vision and Academic Excellence. I?m desperate to come to SISU again and express my feeling to you in reality. Tian Shenmeng
