Dubliners故事简介分析英文版Dublinersisacollectionof15shortstoriesbyJamesJoyce,firstpublishedin1914.ThefifteenstoriesweremeanttobeanaturalisticdepictionoftheIrishmiddleclasslifeinandaroundDublinintheearlyyearsofthe20thcentury.ThestorieswerewrittenatthetimewhenIrishnationalismwasatitspeak,andasearchforanationalidentityandpurposewasraging;atacrossroadsofhistoryandculture,Irelandwasjoltedbyvariousconvergingideasandinfluences.TheycentreonJoyce'sideaofanepiphany:amomentwhereacharacterhasaspecialmomentofself-understandingorillumination.ManyofthecharactersinDublinerslaterappearinminorrolesinJoyce'snovelUlysses.[1]Theinitialstoriesinthecollectionarenarratedbychildrenasprotagonists,andasthestoriescontinue,theydealwiththelivesandconcernsofprogressivelyolderpeople.ThisisinlinewithJoyce'stripartitedivisionofthecollectionintochildhood,adolescenceandmaturity.TheSisters–AfterthepriestFatherFlynndies,ayoungboywhowasclosetohimandhisfamilydealwithitonlysuperficially.AnEncounter–Twoschoolboysplayingtruantencounteranelderlyman.Araby–Aboyfallsinlovewiththesisterofhisfriend,butfailsinhisquesttobuyheraworthygiftfromtheArabybazaar.Eveline–AyoungwomanabandonsherplanstoleaveIrelandwithasailor.AftertheRace–CollegestudentJimmyDoyletriestofitinwithhiswealthyfriends.TwoGallants–Twoconmen,LenehanandCorley,findamaidwhoiswillingtostealfromheremployer.TheBoardingHouse–Mrs.MooneysuccessfullymanoeuvresherdaughterPollyintoanupwardlymobilemarriagewithherlodgerMr.Doran.ALittleCloud–LittleChandler'sdinnerwithhisoldfriendIgnatiusGallahercastsfreshlightonhisownfailedliterarydreams.ThestoryreflectsalsoonChandler'smooduponrealizinghisbabysonhasreplacedhimasthecentreofhiswife'saffections.Counterparts–Farrington,alumberingalcoholicIrishscrivener,takesouthisfrustrationinpubsandonhissonTom.Clay–TheoldmaidMaria,alaundress,celebratesHalloweenwithherformerfosterchildJoeDonnellyandhisfamily.APainfulCase–Mr.DuffyrebuffsMrs.Sinico,thenfouryearslaterrealizeshehascondemnedhertolonelinessanddeath.IvyDayintheCommitteeRoom–MinorIrishpoliticiansfailtoliveuptothememoryofCharlesStewartParnell.AMother–Mrs.Kearneytriestowinaplaceofprideforherdaughter,Kathleen,intheIrishculturalmovement,bystarringherinaseriesofconcerts,butultimatelyfails.Grace–AfterMr.Kernaninjureshimselffallingdownthestairsinabar,hisfriendstrytoreformhimthroughCatholicism.TheDead–GabrielConroyattendsaparty,andlater,ashespeakswithhiswife,hasanepiphanyaboutthenatureoflifeanddeath.ParalysisThesefivethemesarecloselyconnected.ThecolonizationofIrelandisparalleledbythesenseofdefeatandpowerlessnessinthelivesofindividuals.Inmanystories,charactersaresotrappedbytheirconditionsthatstrugglingseemspointless.In"Counterparts,"forexample,Farringtonisallowedonemomentoftriumphwhenhepubliclyhumiliateshistyrannicalboss.Butforthatonemoment,Farringtonismadetogrovelinprivate,andheknowsafterwardthathislifeatworkwillbecomeevenmoreunpleasant.Joyceconveysthispowerlessnessthroughstasis.InDublin,notmuchmoves.Attimestheparalysisisliteral:noteFatherFlynnin"TheSisters."Atothertimes,thestasisisastateoflife,aswiththefrustratedLittleChandlerof"ALittleCloud."ThisfeelingofstasisiscloselyconnectedtoafeelingthatDublinisakindofprison.Manycharactersfeeltrapped.Webeginwithaparalyzedpriestin"TheSisters,"followedbyfrustratedschoolboystrappedbyDublin'stediumin"AnEncounter,"followedbyaboywithoutthemeanstoindulgehisfantasiesin"Araby,"followedbyayoungwomancrushedbythestiflingconditionsthatentrapherathomein"Eveline"...mostofthecharactersareissomewayimprisoned.Theentrapmentisoftencausedbyacombinationofcircumstances:poverty,socialpressure,familysituation.Sometimes,theimprisonmentcomesfromtheguileofanothercharacter,aswiththehaplessMr.Doranin"TheBoardingHouse."Thefrustrationcausedbythisstasis,impotence,andimprisonmenthasahorribleeffectonthehumanspirit.Often,theweakinDublinersdealwiththeirfrustrationbybullyingthestillweaker.Mahonyof"AnEncounter"picksonsmallchildrenandanimals,LittleChandlerandFarrington,intwoback-to-backstories,takeouttheirfrustrationsontheirchildren.
