Painting, the execution of forms and shapes on a surface by means of pigment, has been continuously practiced by humans for some 20,000 years. 32 other activities that may have been ritualistic in origin but have come to be designated as artistic such as music or dance, painting was one of the earliest ways in which man 33 to express his own personality and his 34 understanding of an existence beyond the material world. 35 music and dance, however, examples of early forms of painting have 36 to the present day. READING COMPREHENSION In this section there are four passages followed by questions or unfinished statements, each with four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that you think is the best answer. TEXT A A twenty-year-old immigrant, Levi Strauss, came to the United States in 1850 to seek his fortune in the gold fields. But strangely enough, this man made his fortune on heavy canvas that he found suitable for working clothes. Strauss's jeans were particularly good for prospectors and cowboys. In the early days of jeans, this man couldn't have guessed that his pants, made only for rough work, would become so popular at all levels of society. Yes, this is a fact: jeans have become fashionable in our society. Furthermore, these pants have come to symbolize changes in social attitude. In the last decade or two we have seen movements toward equality as well as defiance of authority. Jeans, now worn by everybody, can be said to symbolize these changes for the better. In the past, only men wore jeans, and these men were at the bottom—socially and economically. Jeans were worn by truck drivers, farm and factory workers. Today, jeans no longer are looked down upon. They are worn by both men and women, by both skilled and unskilled workers, by both employees and employers. This common way of dressing symbolizes respect for individuality, no matter what your occupation or sex. In the fight against authority, young people have been the leaders. So it is natural that teenagers would defy parents and school administrators over the right to wear jeans to class and win. Jeans are the typical dress of civil rights marchers, fans at rock concerts, "hippies" returning to nature, and serious college students. Because everyone can be comfortable in them, the blue jeans invented for the use of workers are now accepted almost anywhere, anytime. This is true not only in the United States, but in many other countries in the world. I strongly agree with the following statement: "Old or new, glorified or plain, jeans are likely to be around for a long time to come. Already they have succeeded where statesmanship has failed. Although unable to speak the same language, the inhabitants of this embattled planet have at least agreed to wear the same pants." 82、 Jeans, originally designed by Levi Strauss, ______. A. have become a symbol of the fashionable class B. have come to symbolize changes in social attitude C. are suitable wear for rough work only D. are no longer so popular as they used to be 83、 What is implied but not directly stated in the passage is that ______ A. young people have been the leaders in the fight against authority B. today jeans are no longer looked down upon C. jeans are the typical dress of civil rights marchers D. formerly students were not allowed to wear jeans to class 84、 The author is of the opinion that ______ A. jeans are likely to be a short-lived fashion B. jeans are popular only in the United States C. jeans are likely to be popular for a long time to come D. jeans are no longer fashionable 85、 The last two sentences imply that ______ A. statesmen in the world are less competent than jeans B. the inhabitants of the world should speak the same language C. statesmen have failed to reach agreement on many major issues of the world D. jeans will help statesmen to reach agreement on some world issues TEXT B Parkour is a physical activity that is difficult to categorize. It is not an extreme sport, but an art or discipline that resembles self-defense in the martial arts. According to David Belle, the physical aspect of parkour is getting over all the obstacles in your path as you would in an emergency. You want to move in such a way, with any movement, as to help you gain the most ground on someone or something, whether escaping from it or chasing toward it. Thus, when faced with a hostile confrontation with a person, one will be able to speak, fight, or flee. As martial arts are a form of training for the fight, parkour is a form of training for the flight. Because of its unique nature, it is often said that parkour is in its own category: "Parkour is parkour." An important characteristic of parkour is efficiency. Practitioners move not only as fast as they can, but also in the least energy-consuming and most direct way possible. This characteristic distinguishes it from the similar practice of free running, which places more emphasis on freedom of movements, such as acrobatics. Efficiency also involves avoiding injuries, short and long-term, part of why parkour's unofficial motto is tre et durer (to be and to last). Tracers claim that parkour also influences one's thought process by enhancing critical thinking skills that allow one to overcome everyday physical and mental obstacles. There are fewer predefined movements in parkour than gymnastics, as it does not have a list of appropriate "moves." Each obstacle a tracer faces presents a unique challenge on how they can overcome it effectively, which depends on their body type, speed and angle of approach, the physical make-up of the obstacle, etc. Parkour is about training the body mind to react to those obstacles appropriately with a technique that works. Often that technique cannot and need not be classified and given a name. In many cases effective parkour techniques depend on fast redistribution of body weight and the use of momentum to perform seemingly impossible or difficult body maneuvers at speed. Absorption and redistribution of energy is also an important factor, such as body rolls when landing which reduce impact forces on the legs and spine, allowing a tracer to jump from greater heights than those often considered sensible in other forms of acrobatics and gymnastics. There are many basic techniques that are emphasized to beginners for their versatility and effectiveness. Most important are good jumping and landing techniques. The roll, used to limit impact after a drop and to carry one's momentum onward, is often stressed as the most important technique to learn. Many tracers develop joint problems from too many large drops and rolling incorrectly. Due to large drops parkour has sometimes received criticism for its questionable safety. Several communities in Great Britain have been warned by law enforcement or fire and rescue of the potential dangers of parkour. Although David Belle has never been seriously injured while practicing parkour, there is no careful study about the health issues of large drops and tracers stress gradual progression to avoid any problems. 86、 Parkour is a physical activity that ______. A. is categorized in extreme sports B. will be useful when someone flees C. originate from martial arts D. can help us walk faster and faster 87、 According to the passage, "critical thinking skills" (Line 1, Para. 3 ) refers to skills of A. judging and giving comments on something B. decisive thinking C. conquering crisis D. finding out essentials 88、 Which of the following is NOT a determinant to the effectiveness of parkour? A. Participator's figure. B. Participator's relative location to the obstacle. C. Participator's reaction to the obstacle. D. Participator's experience of parkour. 89、 The following are parkour techniques EXCEPT ______. A. reducing energy waste during the process B. making poses while moving at speed C. fighting against someone blocking the path D. preventing oneself from being injured or hurt 90、 What can we learn from the passage? A. Tracers believe long-term effective practice can help avoid injuries. B. Beginners should train their endurance above all. C. All parkour participators pay less attention to their safety. D. Large drops are the most difficult techniques of parkour. 91、 Which of the following activities is mostly close to parkour? A. Martial art. B. Obstacle race. C. Gymnastics. D. Acrobatics. TEXT C Certainly no creature in the sea is odder than the common sea cucumber. All living creature, especially human beings, have their peculiarities, but everything about the little sea cucumber seems unusual. What else can be said about a bizarre animal that, among other eccentricities, eats mud, feeds almost continuously day and night but can live without eating for long periods, and can be poisonous but is considered supremely edible by gourmets? For some fifty million years, despite all its eccentricities, the sea cucumber has subsisted on its diet of mud. It is adaptable enough to live attached to rocks by its tube feet, under rocks in shallow water, or on the surface of mud fiats. Common in cool water on both Atlantic and Pacific shores, it has the ability to suck up mud or sand and digest whatever nutrients are present. Sea cucumbers come in a variety of colors, ranging from black to reddish brown to sand color and nearly white. One form even has vivid purple tentacles. Usually the creatures are cucumber shaped—hence their name— and because they are typically rock inhabitants, this shape, combined with flexibility, enables them to squeeze into crevices where they are safe from predators and ocean currents. Although they have voracious appetites, eating day and night, sea cucumbers have the capacity to become quiescent and live at a low metabolic rate—feeding sparingly or not at all for long periods, so that the marine organisms that provide their food have a chance to multiply. If it were not for this faculty, they would devour all the food available in a short time and would probably starve themselves out of existence. But the most spectacular thing about the sea cucumber is the way it defends itself. Its major enemies are fish and crabs, when attacked, it squirts all its internal organs into water. It also casts off attached structures such as tentacles. The sea cucumber will eviscerate and regenerate itself if it is attacked or even touched; it will do the same if the surrounding water temperature is too high or if the water becomes too polluted. 92、 According to the passage, why is the shape of sea cucumbers important? A. It helps them to digest their food. B. It helps them to protect themselves from danger. C. It makes it easier for them to move through the mud. D. It makes them attractive to fish. 93、 The words "this faculty" (Line 3, Para.4) refers to the sea cucumber's ability to ______. A. squeeze into crevices B. devour all available food in a short time C. suck up mud or sand D. live at a low metabolic rate 94、 The 4th paragraph of the passage primarily discusses ______. A. the reproduction of sea cucumbers B. the food sources of sea cucumbers C. the eating habits of sea cucumbers D. threats to sea cucumbers' existence 95、 Compared with other sea creatures the sea cucumber is very ______. A. sensitive B. intelligent C. aggressive D. fat 96、 Which of the following would NOT cause a sea cucumber to release its internal organs into the water? A. A touch. B. Ocean currents. C. Unusually warm water. D. Pollution. TEXT D Cultural norms so completely surround people, so permeate thought and action, that few people ever recognize the assumptions on which their lives and their sanity rest. As one observer put it, if birds were suddenly endowed with scientific curiosity they might examine many things, but the sky itself would be overlooked as a suitable subject; if fish were to become curious about the world, it would never occur to them to begin by investigating water. For birds and fish would take the sky and sea for granted, unaware of their profound influence because they comprise the medium for every fact. Human beings, in a similar way, occupy a symbolic universe governed by codes that are unconsciously acquired and automatically employed. So much so that they rarely notice that the ways they interpret and talk about events are distinctively different from the ways people conduct their affairs in other cultures. As long as people remain blind to the sources of their meanings, they are imprisoned within them. These cultural frames of reference are no less confining simply because they cannot be seen or touched. Whether it is an individual neurosis that keeps an individual out of contact with his neighbors, or a collective neurosis that separates neighbors of different cultures, both are forms of blindness that limit what can be experienced and what can be learned from other. It would seem that everywhere people would desire to break out of the boundaries of their own experiential worlds. Their ability to react sensitively to a wider spectrum of events and peoples requires an overcoming of such cultural parochialism. But, in fact, few attain this broader vision. Some, of course, have little opportunity for wider cultural experience, though this condition should change as the movement of people accelerates. Others do not try to widen their experience because they prefer the old and familiar, seek from their affairs only further confirmation of the correctness of their own values. Still others recoil from such experiences because they feel it dangerous to probe too deeply into the personal or cultural unconscious. Exposure may reveal how tenuous and arbitrary many cultural norms are; such exposure might force people to acquire new bases for interpreting events. And even for the many who do seek actively to enlarge the variety of human beings with whom they are capable of communicating there are still difficulties. Cultural myopia persists not merely because of inertia and habit, but chiefly because it is so difficult to overcome. One acquires a personality and a culture in childhood, long before he is capable of comprehending either of them. To survive, each person masters the perceptual orientations, cognitive biases, and communicative habits of his own culture. But once mastered, objective assessment of these same processes is awkward since the same mechanisms that are being evaluated must be used in making the evaluations. 97、 The examples of birds and fish ______. A. show that they, too, have their respective cultures B. illustrate that human beings are unaware of the cultural codes governing them C. demonstrate the similarity between man, birds, and fish in their ways of thinking D. explain humans occupy a symbolic universe as birds and fish occupy the sky and the sea 98、 The term "parochialism" ( Line 3, Para. 3 ) most possibly means ______. A. open-mindedness B. provincialism C. superiority D. discrimination 99、 It can be inferred from the last two paragraphs that ______. A. everyone would like to widen their cultural scope if they can B. childhood is an important stage in comprehending culture C. provided one's brought up in a culture, he may be with bias in making cultural evaluations D. the obstacles to overcoming cultural parochialism lie mainly in people's habit of thinking 100、 Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A. People's visions will be enlarged if only they know that cultural differences exist. B. Individual and collective neurosis might prevent communications with others. C. People in different cultures may be governed by the same cultural norms. D. If cultural nouns are something tangible, they won't be so confining. 101、 The passage might be entitled "______" A. How to Overcome Cultural Myopia B. Behavioral Patterns and Cultural Background C. Harms of Cultural Myopia D. Cultural Myopia—A Deep-rooted Collective Neurosis PART ? W: Does it have three bedrooms? M: No. There are two. The master bedroom is quite spacious, though. Maybe you could let the children share the larger room, and you and your husband could use the smaller one. W: I suppose I could do that. M: A three-bedroom apartment will be difficult to find. W: Yes, I know. Believe me. I've been looking for over a week. The few three bedroom apartments that I have found are either extremely expensive or the owner won't allow children as tenants. M: Well, the owner allows two children in this apartment complex. W: Aren't you the owner? M: No, I am the manager. I live hem, too, on the first floor of this building. W: Oh. That's nice. Then if anything gets broken... M: Just leave a note on my door. W: You said that the rent would be $150 a month. Does that include any of the utilities? M: Yes. It includes gas. Your furnace and stove use gas, so, as you can imagine, your other utilities, electricity and water, are quite inexpensive. W: That sounds better. But before I sign a lease, I would like my husband to see it. M: Why not stop by with him this evening? W: How late are you open? He doesn't get off work until five. M: Come by at six. Born and brought up in Brooklyn in New York, he loved reading comic books best and sometimes watching movies. At school he was noted for his extraordinarily high IQ, but school is said to have held little interest for him. When he was fifteen he took up the woodwind instrument and become an accomplished player, particularly of jazz music. Allen began selling jokes to newspaper columnists, and in the early 1960s began appearing in comedy clubs telling his own jokes, and is now known as one of the greatest stand-up comedians ever. In the mid-sixties, Allen moved into the world of film-making, at first as a writer and actor. What's New, Pussycat? came out in 1965. Woody Allen proved himself a productive writer as well as movie scriptwriter; he had two hit theatre shows on Broadway. He became a film director in the late sixties and produced some hugely successful film comedies, notably Sleeper, a comedy set in the future, Bananas, a comedy set in a Banana Republic, and Love and Death, his classic satire of Tolstoy's War and Peace. As the 70s progressed, Allen found his voice as a filmmaker. In 1977, his film, Annie Hall, was a huge success and won him praise from audiences and critics alike, and it won three Oscars, for director, screenplay and best picture. C 15、 [听力原文] Following the passing of the British Library Act by Parliament in 1972, the British Library came into operation with effect from the 1st of July 1973. The British Library has a number of components. The major sections of the organization known as the British Library are the Library of the British Museum, National Central Library, and the British Library Document Supply Centre. The Department of Printed Books of the British Museum was founded in the same year of the foundation of the British museum, in 1753. The Library has the privilege of legal store, which means that a copy of a large proportion of all printed material in the UK goes to the British Library. These include not only books, journals and magazines, but also newspapers, maps and printed music. The British Museum's Domed Reading Room is well known in intellectual circles, and was designed in the 1850s at the urge of Sir Anthony Panizzi, then Chief Librarian. Originally the Reading Room was open to the general public, but due to overcrowding, a pass was required for admission. In addition to Vladimir Lenin, other famous readers in this exclusive place of study included Karl Marx, and the writers Charles Dickens and George Bernard Shaw. The British Library Document Supply Centre administers a stock of over 260,000 journal titles, over 3 million books, almost 500,000 conference proceedings, nearly 5,000,000 scientific reports. Wide spread use of written language would not have been possible without some cheap and practical material to write on. The invention of paper meant that more people could be educated because more books could be printed and distributed. Together with the printing press, paper provided an extremely important way to communicate knowledge. How much paper do you use every year? Probably you cannot answer that question quickly. In 1990 the world's use of paper was about one kilogram for each person a year. Now some countries use as much as 50 kilograms of paper for each person a year. Countries like the United States, England and Sweden use more paper than other countries. Paper, like many other things that we use today, was first made in China. In Egypt and the West, paper was not very commonly used before the year 1400. The Egyptians wrote on a kind of material made of a water plant. Europeans used parchment for many hundreds of years. Parchment was very strong; it was made from the skin of certain young animals. We have learnt of the most important facts of European history from records that were kept on parchment. 20、A 本题出题点在重要时间状语处(before the year 1400)。 SECTION C NEWS BROADCAST 22、C [听力原文] Security forces in Guinea Bissau have shot dead at least four people, including two senior politicians they accused of plotting a coup just over three weeks before presidential elections. READING COMPREHENSION TEXT A 82、B 根据A项中fashionable定位到第一段倒数第二句jeans have become fashionable in our society(牛仔裤已成为社会的时尚),但不能说牛仔裤是时尚阶层的标志,故排除A;根据B项的changes in social attitude定位到第一段最后一句Furthermore, the pants have come to symbolize changes in social attitude(更进一步说,牛仔裤已代表了社会态度的转变),所以B为正确答案。 根据原文第二段倒数第二句so it is natural that teenagers would defy parents and school administrators over the right to wear jeans to class…(所以很自然,年轻人会违抗父母及学校管理者的意愿,争取穿牛仔裤上学的权利),由此可推知在此之前学生是不允许穿牛仔裤到学校的,A、B和C三项在文中均明确提及,故选D。 根据原文最后一段…(jeans are likely to be around for a long time to come(在未来很长的一段时间内,牛仔将继续存在)可知本题选C。 Already they have succeeded where statesmanship has failed(Although unable to speak the same language(the inhabitants of this embattled planet have at least agree to wear the same pants((它们已获得了政治家们不能达到的成功。 这取决于他们的身体类型、速度和靠近的角度、障碍物的组成等等,A项的Participator's figure相当于原文中的their body type,B项的relative location相当于原文中的angle of approach,故排除A和B。 As martial arts are a form of training for the fight, parkout is a form of training for the flight提到,练习武术是为了格斗,而练习跑酷是为了逃跑,所以C项明显是错的;文章最后一段提到了避免在跑酷中受伤的技巧,故排除D。 (If it were not for this faculty…),它们就会在短时间内吃掉所有可吃的食物,最后很可能会饿死。由此可知this faculty就是指前文的the capacity to become quiescent and live at a low metabolic rate,即指它们能把新陈代谢率降到很低的水平,故选D。 TEXT D 97、B 本题的出题点在类比处(in a similar way)。 100、B 本题出题点在段尾的并列句式处(whether…or…,both)。 PART ? WRITING SECTION A COMPOSITION 102、One Way to Solve the Rubbish Problem The world is developing very fast, but it is faced with a very serious environmental problem: the rubbish. Every day, people are throwing away garbage, and the increase in the amount has been sharper and sharper. As I see it, to reduce the huge amount of rubbish, government supervision is of essential importance. Evidence has shown that self-control is not sufficient for solving the rubbish problem. If governments take effective environment-oriented measures like imposing taxes on packaging, providing recycling services and fining households and shops that do not attempt to recycle their waste, environment protection actions will be highly encouraged. In addition, government participation in environmental protection will set a good example for the general public and people's awareness of the issue will be aroused. By publicizing the seriousness of the rubbish problem and the potential dangers it may bring to human beings, governments can make people fully convinced of the urgency of the problem and thus motivated to deal with it. Once people's awareness is aroused, they will tend to produce less rubbish either in their daily life or in the industrial production, and then the problem will be solved gradually. To sum up, governments play an important role in dealing with the rubbish problem because with the political will and effective measures, not only will the current production of rubbish be controlled, but also people's attitude towards rubbish and environmental protection will be changed, which will contribute to the ultimate solution to the problem. SECTION B NOTE-WRITING 103、April 3rd, 2012 Dear Jane, I'm so glad to receive your invitation and thank you very much for inviting me to your fancy ball this Saturday evening.
