The Old Town of Lijiang
As a scenic spot of Yunnan, the Old Town of Lijiang attracts varieties of tourists around the world.
Lijiang old town (including Dayan大研, Baisha白沙and Shuhe束河) is an intact ancient city inhabited mostly by Nakhi people and covers an area of 1.5 square kilometers. It is also known as Dayan Town(大研镇) that locates in the central of Lijiang dam丽江坝. The town has a history going back more than 800 years and was once a confluence for trade along the old tea horse road茶马路.
The Lijiang old town is famous for its orderly system of waterways and bridges. The old town of Lijiang differs from other ancient Chinese cities in architecture, history and the culture of its traditional residents the Nakhi people. Lijiang is the home of mural paintings壁画, which were painted by people from Han, Tibetan and Naxi ethnic groups纳西族in the Ming Dynasty. The largest is 2.07 meters by 4.48 meters and contains 600 figures. And Lijiang old town was registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List on December 4, 1997. Since then, the local government has taken more responsibility for the development and protection of the old city.
