Unit 1 Caring for Our Earth Unit 1 Caring for Our Earth Section One Each of the students will be asked one question on the topic “Caring for Our Earth”. 1. What types of energy are popular in your country? For example, coal, gas, nuclear power. What does your house or apartment use? Coal is the most popular power. But today, oil and natural gas have replaced coal in most areas. In my house, we use natural gas to cook, to heat, to warm me up… 2. Does your community offer a recycling program? Do you think recycling is an important service for communities to provide? Why or why not? No, although it offers the recycling dustbins. (Until now,my community still have not offered a recycling program. It is a pity.) Yes. It is eco-friendly. And it not only reduces the stress of the dustman, but also simplifies the procedure of the disposition of rubbish which costs the residents a large amount of money. That’s a win-win strategy. 3. In your opinion, what can cities like Beijing and Qingdao do to improve their air quality? Control the emission from factories, from power stations, encourage people to take the bus rather than the private cars ( By bus. Reduce the use of their cars. This is of great significance to control the emission of gas, and it is easily to do. Besides they can demand government for rights. ) on one’s own initiative 4. How are products packaged in our country? For example, how do you usually buy milk, electronic equipment and clothing? Are they good for our earth? Why or why not? The products are always packaged in the plastic bag, which is maked from the non-degradable material. Of course, they are not good for our earth. They are disposable, and when they finish their mission as a tool to carry foods, products, they will be thrown as waste. And the problem is, the plastic bags can’t be degraed. As a result, they take up too much space and they pollute the living environment. 5. Do you agree that our country will be short of fresh water in the future? Why or why not? No. Maybe that is a problem, but not a urgent one. Unevenly distributed 6. What should be done in order to prevent the climate change? From the cars we drive and the fuels we use, to how we build our houses, run our businesses, structure our food supply chains, dispose of our rubbish and even invest our money. Global warming may be the most harmful environmental problem human beings have created. Please discuss its causes, consequences and what we can do to reduce it. (causes1, consequences2) 1 Statistics suggest that , almost 100% of the observed temperature increase /over the last 50 years/ has been due to /the increase in the atmosphere/ of greenhouse gas concentrations . Greenhouse gases are those gases /that contribute to the greenhouse effect. The largest contributing source of greenhouse gas/ is the burning of fossil fuels /leading to the emission of carbon dioxide. Eg: driving a car, the carbon dioxide will be emitted into the air. 2 Increasing global temperatures are causing a broad range of changes. Sea levels are rising due to thermal expansion of the ocean, in addition to melting of land ice. Amounts and patterns of precipitation are changing. The total annual power of hurricanes has already increased markedly since 1975 because their average intensity and average duration have increased (in addition, there has been a high correlation of hurricane power with tropical sea-surface temperature). Changes in temperature and precipitation patterns increase the frequency, duration, and intensity of other extreme weather events, such as floods, droughts, heat waves, and tornadoes. Other effects of global warming include higher or lower agricultural yields, further glacial retreat, reduced summer stream flows, species extinctions. As a further effect of global warming, diseases like malaria are returning into areas where they have been extinguished earlier. Although global warming is affecting the number and magnitude of these events, it is difficult to connect specific events to global warming. Although most studies focus on the period up to 2100, warming is expected to continue past then because carbon dioxide (chemical symbol CO2) has an estimated atmospheric lifetime of 50 to 200 years. For a summary of the predictions for the future increase in temperature up to 2100. Unit 2 Nobel Prize Winners 7. Have you ever thought to win a big prize in the future, and what do you plan to do to achieve the goal? Yes. I long to winning the Red Dot prize. Life goal. Who do you admire most? Why? Einstein, thomas Mann, Moyan... Gandi, mandela, devoted themselves to the world peace. Save lives, give home to many refugees, they are selfless, warm-hearted 9. What would you do if you were awarded the Nobel Prize? I will contribute half of the on one hand, I would devote one fifth to the Red Cross/ to help the people /who needed money.on the other hand, I would take out another one fifth/ to found a scholarship of my research field/ to encourage the young man of this major. and finally, the rest would be used in my own research 10. What do you think is the most important quality of a successful scientist? Observation, perseverance, specialized knowledge, /the thirst for knowledge, curiosity, motivation for them to keep moving 11. Einstein once said: “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving.” How do you understand this statement? We must keep moving on/ in our whole life. We must learn/ until we can’t learn any more. We must keep up with the modern times. Otherwise, we will be out-of-date. You know that is not a good feeling, when everyone …. 12. How could you find the beauty of simplicity in the apparently complex nature? Could you give some examples? Section Two Please have a group discussion on the following topic: What preparations should a university student make for future success? Firstly, we should set a suitable goal. /Suitable is important. We should set the goals /on the basis of the reality. But Unattainable goals mean nothing./ As long as we have goals, /we have motive/ for learning and moving. Setting a goal is a necessary, rather than a mission. Especially /when we feel exhausted, when we are tired of study, as long as /we come up with the goal/ we have set, we will refresh ourselves. Our body will filled with energy. Unit 3 Famous Brand Names 1. Can you name some famous brands? Why do people like them? Chanel, Dior, GUCI, Louis Vuitton, Prada, NIKE, ADIDAS... That is a fashion. Especially in china, people are crazy about the famous brands from western countries. Almost insane! 1. Do you think college students should pursue famous brands? Why or why not? Of course not. Vanity and virtue do not go together. College students should fix the attention to the study, instead of the fashion and famous brands. The first mission for the students is studying which is the important factor that will make a great difference to our future career 1. Some famous brands have a very long history. Why are they so popular among generations of people? High quality and inexpensive, cheap and fine. Because they can’t afford to buy the high-price famous brands, but they are eager to be wear them. That can satisfy their vanity. Every coin has two sides. Advantage: meet partly needs, make a advertisement for the famous brands; Dis-: do harm to the famous brands; consumer will reduce /the expenditure on the expensive brands 1. According to you, what kind of things are worth spending money on? Section Two Please have a group discussion on the following topic: What are the secrets of business success?     Some people think that/ opportunity is the first factor/ leading to success. /They hold the idea, as a proverb saying, “Man proposes, god disposes”. Because almost all successful people /have good luck/ and have caught their valuable opportunities,/ they believe that /opportunity is a leading condition /of the success. If seizes /and makes the best use of opportunity /available, one can succeed surely. In summary, to them, chances and lucks /play the most important role on the road to success.        In my view, both hard work and opportunity eventually matters. They are inseparable from each other, and put together, they make a great success. Hard work is to luck what fish is to water, and can be seen as an interior precondition(前提) of success. They are the factors from within and without respectively. We must work hard, make efforts and get prepared. When opportunities come, meet and make full use of them. Only in this way can we succeed one day. Unit 4 Cloning and Ethics Part II.
