Although she traveled as a young woman to Boston to visit her friends, she rarely left her small valley town as she grew older. In fact, during the last ten years of her life, she would venture only into her garden. Emily Dickinson never married and spent almost her entire life in the home of her family. As she grew older, she rarely left her house. During the last ten years of her life, she dressed only in white and would not allow anyone to see her. When her health failed, she permitted her doctor to examine her from a distance. At last, she died in 1886. All in all, she was unlucky in love, which brought great pain to her. However, she wrote about love as if she felt it over and over again. Her devotion to love and sincerity could be sensed in her every love poem.
