idiedforbeauty Good afternoon, everybody. Thank you for your coming, today I’d like to share a poem with you. I hope you like it and I look forward to your advice. The poem is I died for beauty, but was scarce. Now, let’s appreciate it together. First, I’d like to introduce the poet to you. This poem is written by Emily Dickinson. She is generally regarded as one of the great American poets. Emily Dickinson totally wrote 1775 poems, yet only 7 were published –anonymously-during her lifetime. Although she lived her life in isolation, she explored the world through her poetry. She was born in 1836. as a child, Dickinson was energetic and enjoyed the tasks of daily life. Here childhood seemed normal in many respects. However, as an adult, she became increasingly isolated. Although she traveled as a young woman to Boston to visit her friends, she rarely left her small valley town as she grew older. In fact, during the last ten years of her life, she would venture only into her garden. Emily Dickinson never married and spent almost her entire life in the home of her family. As she grew older, she rarely left her house. During the last ten years of her life, she dressed only in white and would not allow anyone to see her. When her health failed, she permitted her doctor to examine her from a distance. At last, she died in 1886. All in all, she was unlucky in love, which brought great pain to her. However, she wrote about love as if she felt it over and over again. Her devotion to love and sincerity could be sensed in her every love poem. Moreover, the experience of love portrayed in her poetry is intensive. The Appreciation of English Poem—Emily Dickinson's"I Died for Beauty: But Was Scarce" Abstract: This paper aims to expound the relationship of beauty and truth, death and eternity expressed in the poem "I Died for Beauty --But Was Scarce" through analysis it and taste the charm of simplicity. 1 Instruction "I died for Beauty--but was scarce..."was written by Emily Dickinson(1830-1886),Who was the 19th century's most distin-guished literary poet. Dickinson lived a relatively untroubled life in her father's house in Amherst, Massachusetts, Her world was bounded by her home and its surrounding countryside; She ex-plored the inner life of the individual. She was good at finding out unusual meanings from usual matters. Dickinson's poems usually based on her own experiences, her sorrows and joys. Most of her subjects were love, nature, death, and immortality. And her greatest lyrics were on the theme of death. There are more than 600 poems on the subject of death among Dickinson's 1775 po-ems. "I Died for Beauty--But Was Scarce" is one of her most particular statements about death, and like so many of Dickin-son's poems, it has no similar in the work of any other writer. 2 The charm of simplicity and philosophy This poem is very short and the language is simple and e-conomy, there are only 12 lines,3 stanzas in it. I Died for Beauty--But Was Scarce(449) I died for Beauty--but was scarce Adjusted in the Tomb When One who died for Truth, was lain In an adjoining Room-- He questioned softly "Why I failed"? "For Beauty",I replied-- "And I--for Truth--Themself are One-- We Bretheren, are",He said-- And so,as Kinsmen, met a Night-- We talked between the Rooms-- Until the Moss had reached our lips--And covered up--our names--(吴伟仁,1990,P: 21-22.) We can see every is very common and simple in the poetry, there are not any rhetorical adjective or adverb except" scare" and "softly", while the simplicity compress a great deal of meaning. ―I Died for Beauty--But Was Scarce" is philosophical and contains deep and universal philosophy; the poetry displays Dickinson's comprehension on beauty and truth through a fancy conversation between two persons in adjacent tombs: Two persons lying in the tombs became close neighbors, they had a heart-to-heart talk in separated rooms, and asked each other why had died. One is for "beauty", another is for "truth". "Beauty is truth, truth is beauty."(Keats:Ode on a Grecian Urn),so hey became brothers. No matter on what behalf for beauty or for truth, people lose their existence,"the Moss had reached our lips--And covered up--our names–"--they will have to confront the same end- ing:forgetting and forgotten. The ultimate effect of this poem is to show that every aspect of human life--ideals,human feelings,i- dentity--is erased by death. 4 Conclusion Overall, the poetry "I Died for Beauty--But Was Scarce" is not sorrowful but deep, simple but rich philosophical. .Her main key is positive and noble. In the mind of Dickinson, the poetry is the beautiful symbol. And she devoted her life to seek- ing beauty in the poetry kingdom. To die for the beauty, this spirit is also a kind of immortality,to enter the eternal. The death is a real existence in the world, the poet studies death from dif- ferent angles,it just shows her pursuit of truth. Her confusion with death is actually her deep understanding of life and love for the earthly life.
