Virtues owned by an excellent language learner As language learners, we may sometimes get an itch to become proficient in the language we choose. Personally, I suggest our language learners cultivate a series of virtues in study, which paves the road leading to the perfect acquisition of language. Once you have gained the precious virtues, you are much more likely to get enclosed by a great many opportunities to reach your own targets in language learning. Therefore, keep in mind that the following virtues are really of utmost importance to your progress in language. 1.1 Study motivation Study motivation, as a matter of fact, refers to the innate power that pushes students to take study activities. Language learners armed with study motivation will become more willing to take the activity of language learning. For instance, they seem to have a strong desire to search for knowledge of the language they are learning. Moreover, it may urge students to take serious of study activities for the sake of receiving a large quantity of information contributing to forming the foundation of a splendid building of language acquisition. In additional to that, study motivation also plays a profound role in leading the language learning to a feasible way. 1.2 Learning skills Endowed with sufficient study motivation, one may feel himself in desperate need of a series of learning skills. However, many a student feels confused when facing with the approaches of language learning, so you need study motivation for guidance. Acting as a compass in language learning, it well protects the learners from going wrong. As Smith, Michael Arthur pointed out in his book Autonomy and project-based language learning: factors mediating autonomy in project-based CALL, which was in 1998 published by the University of Melbourne E-prints Repository. “Confronted with a study target, we are less likely to be trapped in a great deal of trivial and complicated information, thus helping us take useful measures for the realization of our ultimate goals”. What’s more, as most of the interviewees said, not only does learning skills motivate us to take study activity, it also help preserve and supervise our activeness and enthusiasm. Language learning, as is often the case, seems an activity that requires us to pay much attention to our own potential and characteristic. Therefore, our personal study capability and qualification are surely of great importance, on which our study strategies are always based. 1 课程名称:英语教学原理与案例 姓名:李瑜 课程代码:408320 学号:30708150 任课教师:杨丽斌 1.3 Perseverance Waiving aside the two virtues above, I firmly conceive that the dominant character of a successful language learner lies in the personal endeavor and perseverance, which exert a huge influence on the establishment and maintenance of one’s gained success perpetually Therefore we should attach more importance to our awareness of self-control, self-supervision, as well as self-adjustment. In fact, a learner will become more likely to give up half way on condition that his perseverance is not firm enough. On the contrary, a strong perseverance can surely form a proper study manner, obeying the regularity of ourselves and even our society. Empowered with continuous perseverance, learners will be stimulated to set a series of plans for the sake of their ultimate targets. As long as we are in company with a sense of perseverance and persistence, it will seem much easier for us to conquer every barrier we may encounter on the way to success. 2. Some feasible suggestions in the shaping of a good language learner However, how can we attain the virtues contributing to the achievement in language study? The shaping of a good language learner is not something that unconquerable. Of course, there are plenty of practical methods for us to choose from. First and foremost, you should improve your innate power by yourself, which is actually an initial part in process of becoming a good language learner. Consequently, you have to study harder and have your potential fully played. Having finished the fundamental step, you can continuously enjoy the pleasure of achievement produced by your learning skills Secondly, keep an objective attitude towards the evaluation of your parents and teachers. Nowadays, a great number of researches have conclusion on this problem, indicating that both the appreciation and criticism of our elder generation can more or less exert an influence on the achievement of learner. So I suggest language learners feel at ease about the criticism received and mistakes they made during language learning. Furthermore, as an old saying goes like that interest is the best teacher. Wu Zengsheng(吴增生), a specialist at education, has put forward in his article A Research on The Important Learning Strategies of Language Learners that the most useful ingredient of achievement lies in the learner’s interest in language learning. That is, an enormous learning interest can produce a strong study motivation. One way to help you feel interested in language learning is to have a better understanding of the language. For instance, you can peruse your book before going to class, which will in turn offer you continuous animation in class. The last advice is for our teachers. Teachers can try beautifying the class to call up the interest of students. Sometimes, the teaching quality is due to whether a teacher has used several words full of art and beauty. In class, plenty of lively words, modulation in tone, in together with a series of vivid facial expressions, are all vital factors that count. Only when our teachers create an atmosphere full of freedom, harmony, and pleasure with their students, can they really lead to the mutual benefits on both sides. 3. Conclusion All in all, to be an excellent language learner seems the ultimate goal that we are pursuing for. However, the shaping of a successful learner is of course not an easy job, which is due to the possession of a series of virtues, such as study motivation, learning skills, together with the assistance of perseverance. Under such a circumstance, what we can do is merely taking the advices into practice and play our own part in making every slight progress tangible in the long run of our language learning.
