The attitude to homosexual in China
Over the past thirty years, with the popularized of higher education and the effect of the western perception, the attitude of the general public in China toward the homosexual has changed.
On the one hand, the tolerance to homosexual is on the rise in the main city of China. The statistic shows that more than half people express their understanding to homosexual in the metropolis like shanghai and Beijing. Only 15 percent people suppose that the homosexuality and heterosexuality are not equal in identity. And the people who totally object the homosexual are 10 percent points lower than American, which may because the religious belief is not very common in China. Besides, homosexual relationship of the adult has been legalized in 1997 and in 2011, Ministry of Health of China stopped to regard homosexual as the mental illness, representing the relatively change of Chinese attitude toward homosexuality.
However, on the other hand, According to the Shanghai Jiao Tong University, on the whole, there is still widespread view of unacceptable toward the homosexual in China. They did a survey of 3,500 residents in 34 cities at the end of 2013, and two-thirds of Chinese adult consider the homosexual anomalous, having the higher proportion in less developed cities. What’s more, there are no existing laws and regulations to protect
homosexual people from discrimination in China, let alone get married or adopt children for homosexual spouses.
In conclusion, although the attitude of the general public in china toward the homosexual has changed in the past thirty years with the considerable change of individual value, the traditional value still play the dominant role in the matter of homosexuality.
