The warming was particularly pronounced across most of the eastern half of the country in December, when many places saw temperatures 30 degrees above normal and many records were set.  This mirrored changes seen in the Arctic that month, when temperatures spiked to 50 degrees above normal. Part of this warming was driven by a strong El Niño, or periodic warming in the Pacific Ocean, but some of it can also be attributed to global warming, says meteorologist Eric Holthaus, who was not involved with the federal report.  The analysis es less than a month after the U.S. and 194 other countries signed an agreement in Paris to more aggressively counter the effects of climate change.  “Even if all the initial targets in Paris are met, we’ll only be part of the way there when it es to reducing carbon from the atmosphere,” said President Barack Obama at the time. Still, the agreement represented “a turning point” by setting up “the architecture" for doing so, he said.  NOAA’s climate monitoring center doesn’t issue predictions for future weather, but the agency’s Climate Prediction Center does. That team’s forecast for the next three months calls for warmer-than-average temperatures in much of the country, although parts of Texas and the Southeast may be a little cooler than usual.  As Lancaster University Professor Gail Whiteman told the Weather Channel, "climate change means extreme weather is the new normal."  41. The average temperature of the 20th century is __ . A. 52.4°F B. 56.8°F C. 52°F D. 54.4°F 42. What’s the meaning of the underlined sentence “climate change means extreme weather is the new normal”? A. Extreme weather will not normal due to the climate change. B. Climate change will result in the unpredictable weather. C. Climate change will be more and more mon except for the extreme weather. D. Extreme weather will be kind of tendency in the future. 43. Which of the following statement is true? A. The target of reducing carbon is acplished. B. $1 billion loss was caused by the extreme weather. C. In most areas of US, the temperatures will be warmer than average. D. 2015 was the first warmest and the third wettest on record in the country. 44. What can be inferred from the text? A. The reducing of carbon still needs great efforts worldwide. B. NOAA has nothing to do with the predictions for climate change. C. The whole US will be warmer in the future due to the global warming. D. The weather change in the western areas is more obvious than that in the east. 45. We can probably find the text in __ ? A. a government report B. a science magazine C. an advertisement D. a newspaper B With fuel costs rising and airlines finding more fees to impose on travelers every day, airfare isn’t getting any cheaper. Since you can’t drive to all your dream destinations, flying is the only way to go sometimes and, undeniably, the fastest. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to find the most affordable fares and also avoid paying as many extra charges as possible when you plan ahead. Getting the best fare Airlines put out their fare sales on Tuesday morning, making this day the best day to book a flight for less. Fly during the least popular times. Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday are the slowest days to fly, which means cheaper deals than the rest of the week. You can also find reduced rates on early morning flights, since many people don’t like to get up before the sun to get to the airport. Earlier boarding times can also considerably cut down your chances of getting bumped on an overbooked flight or delayed because of other delayed flights or mechanical issues. Choose your seat later. Some airlines charge you to pick your seat when you book online, adding even more to the bottom line of your ticket cost. If you show up early on your travel day, you can still get suitable seats. Some of the best seats get held back until flight day, unless others are willing to pay extra for them ahead of time, so you still have the chance at one of those. Fly on holidays. You already know that summer is the most expensive time to fly, and even though most other times are more affordable, the days surrounding holidays can be crazy. Save big if you’re willing to travel on major holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. Don’t wait until the last-minute to book. Many travelers don’t know that there’s a sweet spot for booking and getting the best price on your tickets. Book too early or too late and you could end up paying more than you need to. The best time to book is between three months and six weeks from when you want to travel. Avoiding extra fees Airlines will charge for just about anything these days. Some have even toyed around with charging customers for using the restroom. All those extra fees can certainly add up, but there’s no reason to pay them if you don’t have to. Here are some tips to keep money in your wallet once you get to the airport. Avoid the upgrade it’s not necessary. Sometimes upgrades are free, but mostly you will be charged for seeking a last-minute bump to first class, and the cost can be hefty. Fly carry-on only. Baggage fees vary wildly, but almost all airlines charge them and charge big. Why pay for your clothes to fly with you? If everyone in your travel party checks a bag, your bill can be astronomical before you ever even get to your destination. It’s easy to reduce the amount of stuff you pack: Make sure all your clothing coordinates, so you can take less and still make more outfit binations, take only two pair of shoes, plan to do a bit of laundry on your trip and bring only travel-sized toiletries. Pack your own snacks. Unless you’re flying internationally, it’s rare your flight es with a free meal. Snacks on the plane are not cheap and almost never healthy. Don’t rely on what’s on the small menu and instead tuck some of your own snacks – granola bars, homemade muffins, fruit and trail mix all make fantastic travel foods – into your bag and eat a lot better, and cheaper, than other passengers. Do you have a tried and true method of getting the best deal on your flights? Let us know. 46. According to the passage, which of the following flight may be the cheapest? A. A Tuesday night flight B. A summer morning flight C. A Wednesday morning flight D. A winter night flight 47. The author suggests choosing seats later because __ . A. the flight in the early morning is cheaper B. there are enough seats whenever you arrive at the airport C. the passenger may have access to the best seats on flight day D. the passenger may be bumped on an overbooked flight of delayed flight 48. What is the right way to save money when booking a flight? A. Booking a flight six days before you travel. B. Preparing the meal by yourself instead of that provided. C. Flying during the days surrounding holidays. D. Taking your clothes with you when boarding. 49. What can be the best title for the passage? A. Plans on traveling B. Tips on booking a flight C. Saving money in books D. The fares on a flight C The relationship between exercise and cancer has long both interested and puzzled oncologists and exercise physiologists. Exercise is closely associated with lowered risks for many types of cancer. In epidemiological(流行病学)studies, people who regularly exercise generally prove to be much less likely to develop or die from the disease than people who do not. At the same time, exercise involves biological stress, which typically leads to a short-term increase in inflammation(炎症)throughout the body. Now, a new study in mice may offer some clues into the exercise-cancer paradox(悖论). It suggests that exercise may change how the immune system deals with cancer by increasing adrenaline(肾上腺素), certain immune cells and other chemicals that, together, can reduce the seriousness of cancer or fight it off altogether. To try to better understand how exercise can both increase inflammation and protect the body against cancer at the same time, scientists at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark and other institutions decided to closely examine what happens inside mice at high risk for the disease. So, for the new study, which was published this month in Cell Metabolism, they began by gathering a group of adult lab mice. The scientists then injected melanoma(黑素瘤)skin cancer cells into the mice before providing half of them with running wheels in their cages while the other animals remained sedentary. After four weeks, far fewer of the runners had developed full-blown melanoma than the sedentary mice and those that had been diagnosed with the disease showed fewer and smaller hurt. They also were less prone to metastases(转移), even if scientists injected some of the cancer cells into their lungs to promote metastases. In effect, running seemed to have at least partially inoculated(给……做预防注射)the mice against the cancer. Next, the scientists undertook the far more challenging task of reverse-engineering the process by which exercise might be helping to fight off the cancers. To start, they drew blood from both the exercising and sedentary animals and cells from any cancers in both groups. Then they looked microscopically at how the various samples were different. As expected, they found much higher levels of the hormone adrenaline in the blood of the exercising animals, especially right after they had been working out on the wheels. The body releases adrenaline in response to almost any type of stressful experience, including exercise. They also found higher levels of interleukin-6(白细胞介素-6)in the blood of the runners. This is a substance that is released by working muscles and is believed to both increase and decrease inflammation in the body, depending on where and how it goes to work. Perhaps most important, they found much higher numbers in the bloodstreams of runners than in the sedentary mice of a type of immune cell named natural killer cells that are known to be useful cancer fighters. 50. Which mouse had more hormone adrenaline? A. the mouse that didn’t exercise. B. the mouse that ate more. C. the mouse that just finished exercising. D. the mouse that took exercises an hour ago. 51. What does “it” (Paragraph 8) refer to? A. interleukin-6 B. Blood C. muscle D. inflammation 52. Why did scientists inject some cancer cells into mice’s lungs? A. Because scientists wondered how much cancer cells could transfer in the mice. B. Because scientists wondered whether the mice would die. C. Because scientists wondered how cancer cells transferred. D. Because scientists wondered how cancer could be cured. 53. How did scientists at the University of Copenhagen and other institutions start their research on the change inside mice? A. They began with writing a report. B. They began with gathering a group of adult lab mice. C. They began with discussion. D. They began with doing research in the mice. 54. What could be the best title for the passage? A. Exercising is useful B. Exercising can stop cancers. C. Exercising is a good way to cure cancer. D. Exercising may lower cancer risk. D My mom only had one eye. I hated her… she was such an embarrassment. My mom ran a small shop at a flea market. She collected little weeds and such to sell… anything for the money we needed she was such an embarrassment. There was this one day during elementary school. I remember that it was field day, and my mom came. I was so embarrassed. How could she do this to me? I threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school… “Your mom only has one eye?!” and they taunted me. I wished that my mom would just disappear from this world so I said to my mom, “Why don’t you just die?” My mom did not respond. I guess I felt a little bad, but at the same time, it felt good to think that I had said what I’d wanted to say all this time. Maybe it was because my mom hadn’t punished me, but I didn’t think that I had hurt her feelings very badly. That night… I woke up, and went to the kitchen to get a glass of water. My mom was crying there, so quietly, as if she was afraid that she might wake me. I hated my mother who was crying out of her one eye. So I told myself that I would grow up and bee successful, because I hated my one-eyed mom and our desperate poverty. Then I studied really hard. I left my mother and came to Seoul and studied, and got accepted in the Seoul University with all the confidence I had. Then, I got married. I bought a house of my own. Then I had kids, too. Now I’m living happily as a successful man. I like it here because it’s a place that doesn’t remind me of my mom. This happiness was getting bigger and bigger, when someone unexpected came to see me “What?! Who’s this?!” It was my mother… Still with her one eye. It felt as if the whole sky was falling apart on me. My little girl ran away, scared of my mom’s eye. And I asked her, “Who are you? I don’t know you!!” as if I tried to make that real. I screamed at her “How dare you e to my house and scare my daughter! Get out of here now!!” And to this, my mother quietly answered, “oh, I’m so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address,” and she disappeared. Thank goodness… she doesn’t recognize me. I was quite relieved. I told myself that I wasn’t going to care, or think about this for the rest of my life. Then a wave of relief came upon me… one day, a letter regarding a school reunion came to my house. I lied to my wife saying that I was going on a business trip. After the reunion, I went down to the old shack, that I used to call a house…just out of curiosity there, I found my mother fallen on the cold ground. She had a piece of paper in her hand. It was a letter to me. She wrote: My son, I think my life has been long enough now. For you… I’m sorry that I only have one eye, and I was an embarrassment for you. You see, when you were very little, you got into an accident, and lost your eye. As a mother, I couldn’t stand watching you having to grow up with only one eye… so I gave you mine… I was so proud of my son that was seeing a whole new world for me, in my place, with that eye. I was never upset at you for anything you did. The couple times that you were angry with me. I thought to myself, ‘it’s because he loves me.’ I miss you so much. I love you. You mean the world to me. My World Shattered. I hated the person who only lived for me. I cried for My Mother, I didn’t know of any way that will make up for my worst deeds… So I gave you mine. With all my love to you! Your mom. 55. What did the writer’s mother do when he was young? A. A cook. B. A worker. C. A businesswoman D. A cleaner. 56. The writer wished his mom to die, which made his mom __ . In fact, some of the most tragic moments in our life seem never-ending when we are experiencing them. However, there is always a way to take a bad situation and extract something positive from it. Below are five ways to do just that. 61. ________. That is what you should initially tell yourself when something bad happens. Repeat those words in your head and even aloud if it helps. The important thing is that you do not panic, as this will only exasperate the negative experience. Every bad moment in your life will end, which can be a fort during the worst of times. 62. _________. Some people believe that everything happens for a reason. While you may not buy into that philosophy, you can at least give each experience a purpose. Try to think of a lesson that the experience has taught you. Did you meet a new friend while going through this time? Did you learn how not to do something? 63. __________. Almost every situation allows for a bit of levity, so remain humble and try seeing the humorous side of things. Even if it isn’t appropriate to joke about something aloud, you can make humorous observations in your mind to keep you on a positive track. 64. ___________. You will not help anyone by stewing in a moment that has already passed. Whether you were hurt, embarrassed or both, the negative emotions you felt before should not remain fresh in your psyche. If you continue to dwell in the negative, you will never find your way out again. 65. ____________. As I said before, you should never dwell in your past negative experiences. Sometimes it is hard to get out of a funk, however. The best way to rise up from a bad experience and move on from a situation is to set new, positive goals to focus on. This will give you something good to strive for and will take your mind off whatever has occurred. A. Find purpose in the experience. B. “This too shall pass.” C. Set a new goal to work towards. D. Don’t dwell on negative moments. E. Learn new ways to do it. F. Have a sense of humor. G.
