Part II Reading Comprehension (40 points)
Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or incomplete statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice, and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.
Passage One
Some people seem to have a knack for learning languages. They can pick up new vocabulary, master rules of grammar, and learn to write in the new language more quickly than others. They do not seem to be any more intelligent than others, so what makes languages so much easier for them to learn? Perhaps if we take a close look at these successful language learners we may discover a few of the techniques that make language learning easier for them.
First of all, successful language learners are independent learners. They do not depend on the book or the teacher. They discover their own way to learn the language. Instead of waiting for the teacher to explain, they try to find the patterns and the rules for themselves. They try to learn from their mistakes
Successful language learning is active learning. Therefore, they do not wait for a chance to use the language. Instead they look for such a chance. They will try anything to communicate. They are not afraid to repeat what they hear and to say strange things. They are willing to make mistakes and try again. When communication is difficult, they can accept information that is inexact or incomplete. It is more important for them to learn to think in the language than to know the meaning of every word.
Finally, successful language learners are learners with a purpose. They want to learn the language because they are interested in the language and the people who speak it. It is necessary for them to learn language in order to communicate with these people and to learn from them. They find it easy to practice using the language regularly because they want to learn it.

Passage Two
As you are learning English, it’s very possible that you’ll be interested in England. That’s where the language was first spoken. But England is often called by other names. This often confuses people and I wonder if you know what these names mean. So, now I would like to tell you about this matter of names. I believe that you have heard people use the names —— England, Britain or Great Britain. Let’s see what each of these names means.
If you look at a map of Europe, you’ll see a group of islands —— one larger island off the northwest coast, one smaller and many tiny ones. These make up what is called the British Isles. The largest island of the British Isles is Britain. It is also called Great Britain. The smaller island is Ireland.
Britain is divided into three parts: Scotland, Wales and England. But sometimes the word “England” is used instead of “Britain”. Why so?
In ancient times, what is Britain now used to be three different countries. People in these different countries spoke different languages. Over many years the three countries became one. England is the largest and richest of the three and it has the most people. So tile English people take it for granted that their own name stands for the whole island.
There’s another thing that confuses people: sometimes you may hear people say “the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”. That is the official name of the country. Northern Ireland is only one sixth of the island or Ireland. The rest of the island is an independent state, called the Republic of Ireland. So we have the names of “England”, “Britain”, “Great Britain”, and “the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”. Now do you know what each of them means?
46. English was first spoken in _______.

A. Wales B. Scotland

Passage Three
Traditionally, universities have carried out two main activities: research and teaching. Many experts would argue that both these activities play a critical role in serving the community. The fundamental question, however, is how does the community want or need to be served?
In recent years universities have been coming under increasing pressure from both the governments and the public to ensure that they do not remain “ivory towers” (象牙塔) of study separated from the realities of everyday life. University teachers have been encouraged, and in some cases compelled, to provide more courses which produce graduates with the technical skills required for the commercial use. If Aristotle wanted to work in university in the UK today, he would have a good chance of teaching computer science but would not be so readily employable as a philosopher.
A post-industrial society requires large numbers of computer programmers, engineers, managers and technicians to maintain and develop its economic growth but “man”, as the Bible says, “does not live by bread alone.” Apart from requiring medical and social services, which do not directly contribute to economic growth, the society should also value and enjoy literature, music and the arts. In these cost-conscious times, it has even been pointed out in justification for the funding of the arts that they can be useful money earners. A successful musical play, for instance, can contribute as much to the Gross National Product through tourist dollars as any other things.
51. We can know from the first paragraph that the author .

A. society is not satisfied with the present college education
B. interference from the government is unwelcome
C. teachers are forced to do what they don’t like to do

53. The example of Aristotle indicates that .
A. universities in the UK have produced too many good-for-nothing graduates
B. universities should stop teaching philosophy
C. high technology is now valued more than other courses in universities
D. universities should put more stress on computer science
54. According to the passage, literature, music and the arts .
A. contribute directly to economic growth
B. are as necessary to man as medical and social services
C. are justified since they bring profits
D. are a good way of earning money
55. The author implies that .

1. 经济发展通常造成各种严重的环境污染。
2. 目前,我们已采取了许多措施以确保环境卫生。

Environmental Protection
Too often, the development of economy has resulted in serious environmental pollution. Much of our air and water has been polluted by industrial waste and accidents. Oil spills destroy marine life and our beaches. Power plants burning coal and gas produce pollution along with electricity. Sulfur emissions from mines and factory chimneys may result in acidic rain, which kill many life forms in pond and lake waters.
Now we have made many efforts to protect our environment. Laws have been established for environmental protection. Massive programs are launched to clear up rivers and lakes. Sewage plants have been built or improved, and tight controls are placed on industrial emissions. Consequently, we now have a cleaner environment.
We should note, however, that environmental protection will remain a great task for us over a long time to come. Compared to what used to be, we have achieved much in this aspect; compared to what might be, we still have as much to do in the future.

Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or incomplete statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice, and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.
Passage One
How can English teachers accelerate the language learning of their students? One way is to teach students how to learn more effectively and efficiently. Learning strategies are “Procedures or techniques that learners can use to facilitate a learning task.” Instructing students of English in learning strategies can help them become better learners. In addition, skill in using learning strategies assists students in becoming independent, confident learners. Finally, students become more motivated as they begin to understand the relationship between their use of strategies and success in learning English.
Students need to develop an awareness of the learning process and strategies that lead to success. Students who reflect on their own thinking are more likely to engage in planning how to proceed with a learning task, monitoring their own performance on an ongoing basis, finding solutions to problems encountered, and evaluating themselves upon task completion. These activities may be difficult for students accustomed to having a teacher who solves all their learning problems and is the sole judge of their progress.
Teachers need to encourage students to rely more on themselves. Because learning strategies are mental processes with few observable manifestations, teachers need to find ways to make the strategies as concrete as possible. When students are able to use the strategies their teachers have taught them, and to do so without prompting, then they need to explore new strategies, new applications, and new opportunities for self-regulated learning.

C. Students need to explore new learning strategies for themselves.
D. Teachers are the sole judges of students’ progress.

Already today, less than forty years later, as computers are relieving us of more and more of the routine tasks in business and in our personal lives, we are faced with a less dramatic but also less foreseen problem. People tend to be over-trusting of the functions of computers and are reluctant to challenge their authority. Indeed, they behave as if they were hardly aware that wrong buttons might be pushed, or that a computer might simply fail to work properly.
Obviously, there would be no point in investing in a computer if you had to check all its answers, but people should also rely on their own internal computers and check the machine when they have the feeling that something had gone wrong. Questioning and routine double checks must continue to be as much a part of good business as they were in pre-computer days. Maybe each computer should come with the following warning: For all the help this computer may provide, it should not be seen as a device that can take the place of fundamental thinking and reasoning skills.

Passage Three
The U.S. Department of Labor statistics indicate that there is an oversupply of college-trained workers and that this oversupply is increasing. Already there is an overabundance of teachers, engineers, physicists and other specialists. Yet colleges and graduate schools continue every year to turn out highly trained people to compete for jobs that aren’t there. The result is that graduates cannot enter the professions for which they were trained and must take temporary jobs which do not require a college degree. These “temporary” jobs have a habit of becoming permanent.
On the other hand, there is a tremendous need for skilled workers of all sorts: carpenters, electricians, mechanics, and TV repairmen. These people have more work than they can handle and their annual incomes are often higher than those of college graduates. The old distinction that white-collar workers make a better living than blue collar workers no longer holds true.
The reason for this situation is the traditional myth that a college degree is a passport to a prosperous future. Parents begin telling their children this myth before they are out of grade school. Under this pressure the kids fall in line. Whether they want to go to college or not doesn’t matter. Everybody should go to college.
One result of this emphasis on a college education is that many people go to college who do not belong there. Of the sixty per cent of high school graduates who enter college, half of them do not graduate with their class. Many of them drop out within the first year. Some struggle on for two or three years and then give up.
51. What does the U.S. Department of Labor Statistics show?
A. There is an oversupply of labor force and this oversupply is increasing.
B. Many college graduates find it difficult to get jobs for which they were trained.
C. There is a short supply of teachers, engineers and other professionals.
D. There are more temporary jobs than permanent ones in U.S. companies.
52. What does the author mean by saying “these ‘temporary’ jobs have a habit of be coming permanent”?
A. Once college graduates take a temporary job, they soon become used to it.
B. College graduates have developed the habit of taking temporary jobs.
C. Many college graduates might never find jobs for which they were trained.
D. More and more college graduates are unwilling to change their jobs.
53. What is implied but not stated in the passage is that in the past .
A. blue-collar workers made a better living than white-collar workers
B. college and graduate schools trained more skilled workers
C. there were more white-collar workers than blue-collar workers
D. there were less white-collar workers than blue-collar workers
54. By “many people go to college who do not belong there,” the author means that .
A. many people who are not fit for college education go to college
B. many people who don’t have adequate financial support go to college
C. many people who go to college drop out within one or two years
D. many people who go to college find the courses are not interesting
55. We can conclude that the author believes .
A. every young man and woman should go to college
B. more young people should be trained for skilled jobs
C. people with higher education should receive higher pay
D. the government should offer more opportunities for college graduates
Passage Four
What is exactly a lie? Is it anything we say which we know is untrue? Or is it something more than that? For example, suppose a friend wants to borrow some money from you, you say: “I wish I could help you but I’m short of money myself. “In fact, you are not short of money, but your friend is in the habit of not paying his debts and you don’t want to hurt his feelings by reminding him of this. Is this really a lie?
A scientific study of lying shows women are better liars than men, particularly when telling a white lie such as when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it looks terrible. However, this is only one side of the story. Other researches show that men are more likely to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise which they have no intention of fulfilling. This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at: the lie from which the liar hopes to profit or gain in some way.
Research has also been done into the way people’s behavior changes in a number of small, apparently unimportant ways when they lie. It has been found that if they are sitting down at the same time, they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual. To the trained observer they are saying “I wish I were somewhere else now.”
56. This passage tells us that .
A. telling lies is often necessary in order to avoid being defeated
B. telling lies is often bad because people ought not to be dishonest
C. telling lies is sometimes necessary in order not to hurt someone else’s feelings
D. telling lies is not bad at all in most cases
57. In Paragraph 2, the sentence “women are better liars than men do.” probably means .
A. women are better at telling lies than men
B. women liars are better accepted than men
C. women have a better intention when telling lies
D. women tell fewer lies than men do
58. A white lie means .
A. a lie that is completely unbelievable,
B. a lie that is told with a good will
C. a lie that is always believable
D. a lie that often has an evil purpose
59. Politicians and businessmen are supposed to be skilled at telling the kind of lies .
A. from which they may gain some advantages
B. that seems to be believable
C. that women are most likely to believe
D. with which they can have better relationship with others
60. It can be concluded from the passage that .
A. there is a simple way of finding out if someone is lying
B. from some ways people behave we can know they are lying
C. certain emotions are proof of lying
D. in some situations women are most likely to think businessmen are dishonest

Faced with a roomful of dresses, a woman may easily 79 an hour going from one rail to another, to and fro, often retracing her steps, before selecting the dresses she wants to try on. It is a laborious process, but apparently an 80 one. Most dress shops provide chairs for the waiting husbands.

Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or incomplete statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice, and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.
Passage One
People have wondered for a long time how their personalities and behaviors are formed. It is not easy to explain why one person is intelligent and another is not, or why one is cooperative and another is competitive.
Social scientists are, of course, extremely interested in these types of questions. They want to explain why we possess certain characteristics and exhibit certain behaviors. There are no clear answers yet, but two distinct schools of thought on the matter have developed. As one might expect, the two approaches are very different from one another, and there is a great deal of debate between proponents of each theory. The controversy is often referred to as “nature / nurture”.
Those who support the“nature”side of the conflict believe that our personalities and behavior patterns are largely determined by biological and genetic (遗传学的) factors. That our environment has little, if anything, to do with our abilities, characteristics, and behavior is central to this theory. Taken to an extreme, this theory maintains that our behavior is predetermined to such a degree that we are almost completely governed by our instincts.
Proponents of the “nurture” theory, or, as they are often called, behaviorists, claimed that our environment is more important than our biologically based instincts in determining how we will act. A behaviorist, B. F. Skinner, sees humans as beings whose behavior is almost completely shaped by their surroundings. The behaviorists’ view of the human being is quite mechanistic; they maintain that, like machines, humans respond to environmental stimuli (刺激) as the basis of their behavior.
Either of these theories cannot yet fully explain human behavior. In fact, it is quite likely that the key to our behavior lies somewhere between these two extremes. That the controversy will continue for a long time is certain.

D. Nurture proponents would disagree that Blacks are biologically inferior to Whites.
Passage Two
Normally a student must attend a certain number of courses in order to graduate, and each course which he attends gives him a credit which he may count towards a degree. In many American universities the total work for a degree consists of thirty six courses each lasting for one semester. A typical course consists of three classes per week for fifteen weeks; while attending a university a student will probably attend four or five courses during each semester. Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two semesters each year. It is possible to spread to period of work for the degree over a longer period. It is also possible for a student to move between one university and another during his degree course, though this is not in fact done as a regular practice.
For every course that he follows a student is given a grade, which is recorded and available for the student to show to prospective employers. All this imposes a constant pressure and strain of work, but in spite of this some students still find time for great activity in student affairs. Elections to positions in student organizations arouse much enthusiasm. The effective work of maintaining discipline is usually performed by students who advise the academic authorities. Any student who is thought to have broken the rules, for example, by cheating, has to appear before a student court. With the enormous numbers of students, the operation of the system does involve a certain amount of activity. A student who has held one of these positions of authority is much respected and it will be of benefit to him later in his career.

My View on Job-hopping
Some people tend to stick to their positions all the time. They think that the longer one works in a field, the more skillful one will be at it. Such people love their work and turn out to be specialists in their own fields. As a result, they are usually high achievers.
Others are in the habit of job-hopping. They never seem to be content with their present situations. They like to meet more people and make more money, so they hop from job to job.
As far as I am concerned,I am not in favor of constant job-hopping. I want to be professionally strong. And I respect those who devote themselves to their favorite jobs throughout their life.
