Paper for Candidate A and B
Directions:
In this test, you will have an opportunity to demonstrate your ability to understand and use spoken English. The test is divided into three parts. Part 1 Read a short passage aloud and have a discussion together by asking each other some questions based on the passage.
Part 2 Talk with each other on a specific topic chosen by the examiner. Part 3 Complete a role-play task.
I. Read a short passage aloud and have a discussion together by asking each other some questions based on the passage. You conversation should last 3–4
minutes. (30%)
The secretary told me that Mr. Harmsworth would see me. I felt very nervous when I went into his office. He did not look up from his desk when I entered. After I had sat down, he said that business was very bad. He told me that the firm could not afford to pay such large salaries. Twenty people had already left. I knew that my turn had come.
'Mr. Harmsworth,' I said in a weak voice.
'Don't interrupt,' he said.
Then he smiled and told me I would receive an extra thousand pounds a year!
II. Please talk with each other on a specific topic chosen by the examiner for
about 3-4 minutes. (30%)
1. What are the sensitive issues that we’d better not to touch on when we talk
with a person coming from some English-speaking country? Why?
2. Please talk about some Western table manners that differ from Chinese table
manners.
3. In the Western countries is it common to make appointments to visit
professionals such as doctors, dentists, barbers? Is it common to do so in
China?
4. What do you know about Halloween / Thanks–giving Day / Christmas?
III. Please complete a role-play task according to the chosen situation given by your
examiner. You conversation should last 3-4 minutes. (40%)
Situation 1: A is going to have a picnic this Saturday morning. A asks B to join
him or her. B accepts the invitation.
Situation 2 : You are friends. You are discussing whether to go to a Chinese
restaurant or Macdonald’s. Once you decide on the restaurant, you
discuss what to do after the meal: sing Karaoke or see a movie.
