PAST PERFECT
FORMATION: HABER (imperfect tense) + PAST PARTICIPLE (in singular-masculine form)
1: imperfect tense HABER
yo había nosotros/ habíamos
nosotras
tú habías vosotros/ habíais
vosotras
él/ ella/ había ellos/ ellas/ habían
usted ustedes
PAST PARTICIPLE: in singular-masculine form
As you already know, to form the past participle most verbs drop the –ar, -er, or –ir ending of the infinitive and add –ado to –ar verbs and –ido to –er and –ir verbs. For example:
Infinitive Past Participle Meaning
hablar hablado spoken
aprender aprendido learnt
dormir dormido slept
Some verbs have irregular past participles. Write the corresponding irregular past participles and then
use the table in Avance (pg. 16) to check them.
Infinitive Past Participle Meaning
abrir opened
cubrir covered
decir said
escribir written
hacer done
1 Remember that HABER can be used by itself to express “there is/ are”: Hay muchas fiestas en Cornell durante los fines de semana.
The preterit of HABER is: hubo. Both hubo and había mean “there was/ were”. We will see the difference in chapter 3.

USE
When narrating or reporting something from the past, sometimes one of the actions precedes the
others. The past perfect (also called pluperfect) is used as a reference back to an action completed
prior to the basic timeline of the past. In other words, the past perfect is used to tell what
somebody had done or to indicate what had happened before another event took place. For example:
When father started his studies at the university, my mother had already graduated.
Cuando mi padre empezó su carrera en la universidad, mi madre ya se había graduado.
The action of “my mother graduating” happened before “my father started his studies”.
Before coming to Ithaca, I had never seen so much snow.
Antes de venir a Ithaca nunca había visto tanta nieve.
I came to Ithaca at some point in the past, and I am using the past perfect to refer to my
experiences prior to that moment.
When the teacher arrived, the students started to speak in Spanish.
Cuando el profesor llegó, los estudiantes comenzaron a hablar en español.
Here we have one action established in the past (el profesor llegó) with another that took place immediately after. Compare it with the following sentence:
When the teacher arrived, the students had already started to speak in Spanish.
Cuando el profesor llegó, los estudiantes ya habían comenzado a hablar en español.
Here we have one action established in the past (el profesor llegó) with another that had taken place previously.
