一、课程的性质、地位、作用及与其他课程的联系
本课程属于英语模块选修课程,是本科英语专业高年级的一门专业知识课,供英语专业
高年级学生选修。目的是通过教学使学生综合了解英美文化、风俗、习惯、历史、传统等许
多方面的知识,体会名家对文学、艺术、历史、社会、宗教和日常生活领域的精辟见解,提
高学生的审美情趣,文学修养、鉴赏水平和文化综合素质,初步学会分析和欣赏名家名篇,
把握作品中反映的不同时代社会、哲学和艺术思想。此外,英语散文阅读还
学生通过学
习不同的体裁的文章,包括随笔、书信、游记、演说辞等,掌握其写作特点,从而在写作中
学会有意识地选词和用词,提高英语作文的质量,并进而写出优美的文章。
其先修课程为“基础英语”(1、2、3、4)。

Unit 1 My Wood

Unit 2 On a Faithful Friend
【教学目标】To understand Virginia Woolf's writing style, literary status, and the writing features

Unit 3 Film Making
【教学目标】To understand the film-making process as Bergman sees it—an unpredictable,
evocative and almost magical form of art

Unit 4 Meditation on the Moon

Unit 5 Snow

【教学重点与难点】Central to Farley Mowat's writing is his quest to understand the
often-forgotten native people of the vast arctic wilderness. In this fast-paced narrative, he
allows these people to describe in their own words the adventures they experience as they
struggle to survive in an isolated, untamed land. Stories of survival and courage, of
superstition and fate, of uncompromising loyalty to family and tribe are presented here,
offering a vivid portrait of a people whose existence is often beyond the comprehension of
modern man.

his conservative, often counter-natural, ideas in an off-hand, whimsical prose studded with
startling formulations.
Unit 9 The Pleasures of Ignorance
【教学目标】To understand Robert Lynd’s writing style and establish a correct outlook on life and
values

【教学重点与难点】To understand what Robert Lynd said in 1959: “The great pleasure of
ignorance is the pleasure of asking questions. The man who has lost this pleasure or
exchanged it for the pleasure of dogma which is the pleasure of answering is already
beginning to stiffen”.

Unit 14 The Spider and the Bee

【教学重点与难点】The text is an excerpt from Jonathan Swift’s fable of the modern spider and
ancient bee. This satire is about a war that takes place in a library. Students are required to
choose two insects of their own and write a satire by imitating Swift’s style.

本课程为考查课程。
考核以笔试为主,课程学期总评成绩以平时成绩40%(其中考勤5%,课堂
现15%,课后作业20%)、期末考试60%计入成绩册。
