They hoped that governments would act quickly in order to “conserve” nature. Here is one example of the problem. At one time there were 1,000 different plants, trees and flowers in Holland, but now only 860 remain. The others have been destroyed by modern man and his technology. We are changing the earth, the air and water, and everything that grows and lives. We can’t live without these things. If we continue like this, we shall destroy ourselves. What will happen in the future? Perhaps it is more important to ask, “What must we do now?” The people who will be living in the world of tomorrow are the young of today. A lot of them know that conservation is necessary. Many are hoping to save our world. They plant trees, build bridges across rivers and so on. In a small town in the United States a large group of girls cleaned the banks of 11 kilometers of their river. Young people may hear about conservation through a record called “No one’s going to change our world”. It was made by the Scatles, Cliff Richard and other singers. C Deep inside a mountain near Sweetwater in East Tennessee is a body of water known as the Lost Sea. It is listed by the Guinness Book of World Record as the world’s largest underground lake. The Lost Sea is part of an extensive(广阔的)and historic cave system called Graihead Caverns. The Caverns have been known and used since the days of the Cherokee Indian nation. D Greenland offers the best adventures(冒险)of ice and snow all over the world. The ice, up to three kilometers thick, covers an area 14 times the size of England. Visiting the ice cap(冰盖)is possible from most towns in Greenland, although it usually means taking a helicopter or a boat to reach the edge of the ice. In some places the ice cap is only 20 kilometers away and you can hike, drive, fly or bike there and stay overnight if you bring a tent(帐篷). Greenland has no roads or railways between towns. To get around you have to fly. Flying in Greenland is an amazing experience. Take a helicopter ride to the ice cap, and see the glaciers(冰 川)flow between the mountains. Look out the windows! What a thrill! Springtime is the best season for dog-sled tours and skiing. Dog-sled tiding is the best in March and April. On Disko Island, however, it’s possible all year round. The dog-sled driver is a fisherman or hunter(猎人)who normally uses the sled to go to the place where he fishes or hunts, or to carry the fish or the seals back home. The temperature in Greenland is quite different from that of most other places in the world. 10-15 degrees Celsius(摄氏度)feels very warm, while minus 10 degrees Celsius is a comfortable temperature. Because of this, very few animals live there, mainly the polar bear, arctic(北极的) wolf, arctic fox and reindeer. Greenland, the largest island in the world, is a world of amazing beauty at the top of our planet. 请根据短文内容填空,每空一词。 1. We can go to visit the ice cap in ___________ ways according to the passage. 2.
