New EIA-96 Surface Mount Resistor Marking System Smaller SMD resistors now utilize the EIA-96 Marking Code System. The Marking Code consists of two numerals and one letter.. All standard 1%, 2% and 5% resistors use this system, but differ in the value denoted by the numeric part of the Marking Code and the placement of the letter. 5% & 2% marking codes place the letter first (e.g. A12), while 1% marking codes use a trailing letter (e.g. 12 A). The numerals denote a corresponding standard value shown in the appropriate table below. The letter denotes a decimal multiplier as shown in the bottom table, and is identical for 1%, 2% & 5% resistor types. Standard 2% values use numeric code values 01 thru 24 with a leading letter, but are not shown here.
