新理念大学英语 Unit 6 Wealth Gap Widens on Campus Period 2 Reading Teaching Objectives: 1. To arouse the students’ interests for the topic of this unit and to make them take part in the language learning activities on their own initiative. 2. To let students learn the important new expressions 3. To let students master the reading skills: skimming and scanning Teaching contents: 1. a revision of the words and expressions 2. Show several topic- related cartoon pictures and organize a discussion concerning the topic. 3. global reading questions for a general understanding of the text 4. careful reading tasks and questions for a detailed comprehension of each part 5. after-reading activities Important points: 1. Improving the students’ reading ability. 2. Help the students form a critical thinking about the social phenomenon. Difficult points: Encourage the students to express their opinions about the social phenomenon. Teaching methods: Teaching Aids: Communicative method multi-media equipments Task-based method Discussion; Explanation Teaching procedure Step one: revision (3minutes) Review the new words and expressions that have been learnt last class. Step two: pre-reading /lead-in (10minutes) 1. Show two topic- related cartoon pictures to the students. 2. Let them discuss the meaning of each picture in group of four and report their results. 3. Summary the results of discussion and lead in the new class. Step three: while-reading (25minutes) Global reading: 1. Help the students do a fast reading with the guidance of the following questions. 1) What does the first paragraph mainly tell us? 2) What happened to WangQiang and his girl friend? 3) What has been found in the investigation? 2. The passage can be divided into three parts according to the three questions Part one (1) Class differences are spreading on campus. Part two (2-5) an example: effects of class difference on students Part three (6-10) the findings of an investigation areful reading C Part one: questions for this part: 1. What has been found by the China Youth Daily? 2. Word study: widen: 1. become broader or wider or more extensive 2. make (clothes) larger3. make wider 4. extend in scope or range or area For Example: widen the road ; widen the range of applications Relevant words: loose—loosen; sharp---sharpen; tight---tighten Part two: 1. Ask the students try to retell the story in their own words. 2. Question for this part: What is the author’s purpose of giving us such an example? 3. useful expressions: be prudent in: be very careful to do something Part three: 1. questions: What’s the attitude of the poor students toward the rich students? What’s the attitude of the wealthy students toward the poor students? What do the impoverished students think of themselves? 2. useful expressions: tend to: have to tendency to do; likely to do趋向(于),倾向(于),有…的倾向: e.g. We tend to believe whatever we are told. regardless of: In spite of; With no heed to不管,不顾 e.g. I'll take the job regardless of the pay. Step four: post-reading (6minutes) 1. Summarize what has been learnt in the text. 2. question: What is the author’s opinion toward the wealth gap on campus? (neutral) 3. Can you give some examples about this topic? Assignment: (1minutes) 1. Try to finish the exercises on page 115-116. 2. Write a composition about your opinion on the wealth Gap on campus.
