A Monster or an Angel?
Modern science and technology have changed our lives in many dramatic ways: diseases cured, space conquered, transportation and communication revolutionised, agriculture and industry transformed, etc. There is no doubt that science facilitates our life, accelerates the development of our society and improves our living tempo. Science has proved endless marvels and wonders: airplanes, automobiles, communication satellites, computers, plastics, and so on. Based on the facts above, many people hold that science is an angel.
However, others do not think so. They maintain that science is a monster, because they think science has brought a lot of disasters. Firstly, the rapid growth of industrial technology, for instance, has resulted in such grave side effects as environmental pollution and fuel shortages. At the same time, the problems of global warming and species extinctions become more and more serious. Second, science has been applied in the production of weapons. So the destruction in wars would be more severe. We remember the big disaster in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In addition, since we’re sure that technology, especially computer technology will rule our life to a greater and greater degree. We may worry about our privacy will be destroyed. Except for that, science brings many changes and these changes accelerate the living tempo, which makes people can’t adapt. Although science brings much convenience to our lives, we become busier, lonely and more pressured.
From my perspective, science is neither an angel nor a monster. It is just a tool for humans to fulfill their dreams. The effect is not necessarily proved positive or negative. To a large degree, it depends on how we use it. And just because the fact that there are many disasters associated with science does not or should not prevent us from it. What we need to do is to try our best to avoid the negative aspects and earn the benefits.
