IP MODEM INSTALLATION PROCEDURES
Requirement:
• BlackBerry 7100 Series wireless handheld or BlackBerry 7290 Series wireless handheld with
version 1.8 OS platform
• BlackBerry Desktop Software version 3.6 version pack 3 or later
• Carrier branded computer IP modem software
• Carrier provisioned SIM card with internet access APN for IP Modem
Installation Procedures:
1) Install the latest 3.6.3 desktop build
2) Install the latest 3.8 build (3.8 Apps, 1.8 OS) on Charm or Photon
Note: Device needs to be connected to Desktop Manager for IP Modem functionality
If the user has Desktop Software version 4.0 installed previously:
3) Users need to uninstall Desktop Software version 4.0 before installing 3.6.3. See Steps on
how to perform a complete uninstall of the Desktop Manager.
If the user is installing the carrier Internet software:
4a) Follow carrier instructions for creating a dial-up networking instruction, and for setting the
modem initialization string (The carrier software should take care of this)
If the user doesn't have carrier Internet software installed (e.g. For SV&V testing)
4b) For Windows2000 Users
Create Dial-up Connection
i) Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Add New
ii) Select "Dial-up to the private network"
iii) Fill *99# as Telephone number
iv) Choose "For all users"
v) Fill Connection name field with a name, for example "RIM Handheld Modem"
vi) Click Finish
Configure Modem
i) Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager
ii) Open the properties of the RIM IP Modem (It should be named "Standard Modem")
iii) Choose "Advance" Tab
iv) Fill AT+CGDCONT=1, "IP", "internet.com" into "Extra initialization commands" field
(Replace "internet.com" with the APN that goes with your SIM. internet.com is Rogers
APN, Microcell uses internet.fido.ca, etc...)
v) Click OK
For WindowsXP Pro Users
Create Dial-up Connection
i) Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Create a new connection
ii) Select "Connect to the Internet"
iii) Choose "Set up my connection manually"
iv) Choose "Connect using a dial-up modem"
v) Give a name to the connections
vi) Fill *99# as Telephone number
vi) Choose "Anyone's use"
vii) Leave "User name", "Password" and "Confirm password" field empty. Uncheck "Turn
on Internet Connection Firewall for this connection"
viii) Click Finish
Configure Modem
i) Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager
ii) Open the properties of the RIM IP Modem (It should be named "Standard Modem")
iii) Choose "Advance" Tab
iv) Fill AT+CGDCONT=1, "IP", "internet.com" into "Extra initialization commands" field

v) Click OK
Steps on how to perform a complete uninstall of the Desktop Manager:
1. Use Add/Remove buttons to remove BlackBerry® Desktop Manager:
1. Go to Start > Settings > Add/Remove programs.
2. Select BlackBerry Desktop Software.
3. Select Remove.
2. Delete registry entries:
1. Go to Start > Run > type Regedit > Select OK.
2. Expand the folder structure in the left panel to find and delete the
following folders
3. Delete the Research In Motion folder within
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\.
4. If present, delete the PumaTechnology folder from
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\.
5. Delete the Research In Motion folder within
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\
6. If present, delete the PumaTechnology folder from
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\
3. Delete remaining BlackBerry files and folders from Windows® Explorer:
1. Open Windows Explorer. Go to Start > Programs > Accessories >
Windows Explorer.
2. Delete the Research In Motion folder within C:\Program Files\..
3. Delete the Research In Motion folder within C:\Program Files\Common
Files
4. Delete the PUMATECH Shared folder within C:\Program Files\Common
Files
5. Delete Research In Motion folder within C:\Documents and
Settings\\Application Data\.
* NOTE * if the Application Data folder is hidden perform the following
steps:
in the Windows Explorer window go to the Tools Menu. Go to Folder
Options > View change the Hidden Files and Folders option to “Show
Hidden Files and Folders”
Click OK.
6. Delete the RimUsb.sys file found in the C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\
folder.
4. Restart the computer.
