The girl was one of those pretty and charming young creatures who sometimes are born, as if by a slip of fate（命运）, into a family of clerks. She had no dowry（嫁妆）, no expectations, no way of being known, understood, loved, married by any rich and distinguished man; so she let herself be married to a little clerk of the Ministry of Public Instruction. She dressed plainly because she could not dress well, but she was unhappy as if she had really fallen from a higher station. When she sat down to dinner, before the round table covered with a tablecloth in use three days, opposite her husband, who uncovered the soup tureen（汤碗）and declared with a delighted air. （第一幕：家中。二人坐在餐桌旁） Husband：Ah, the good soup! I don't know anything better than that. Mathilde：Thanks darling, but I feel sad. I have a friend, a former schoolmate. She’s rich. I do not like to go to see her any more because she’s better than me. Husband：（拿出信封）There! There is something for you. Mathilde：What’s this?（打开信封拿出信念） The Minister of Public Instruction and Madame Georges request the honor of Madame Loisel's company at the palace of the Ministry on Monday evening, January 18th. （放下信不开心）What do you wish me to do with that? Husband：Why, my dear, I thought you would be glad. You never go out, and this is such a fine opportunity. I had great trouble to get it. Every one wants to go; it is very select, and they are not giving many invitations to clerks. The whole official world will be there. Mathilde：But I don’t know what to put on. Husband：Well, the dress you go to the theatre in. It looks very well. （Mathilde很难过） Husband：（惊慌）What's the matter? What's the matter? Mathilde：Nothing. Only I have no gown, and, therefore, I can't go to this party. Give your card to some colleague whose wife is better equipped than I am. Husband： Come, let us see, Mathilde. I will go to a party and I want to borrow some jewels from you. Forestier：Oh no problem.（拿出一个首饰盒）Choose, my dear, choose whatever you like. Mathilde：（拿出一些看，不满意）Haven't you any more? Forestier：Well, yes. （又拿出一个首饰盒）Look, I don't know what you like." Mathilde：（拿出一串项链，非常喜欢，惊喜）Will you lend me this, only this? Forestier：Well, yes, certainly.（为Mathilde戴上）You look very beautiful. Mathilde：（拥抱Forestier）Thank you Thank you very much! My dear! （第三幕：舞会） （旁白：） The night of the ball arrived. Mathilde was a great success. She was prettier than any other woman present, elegant, graceful, smiling and wild with joy. All the men looked at her, asked her name. She was remarked by the minister himself. She danced with rapture（欢喜）, with passion,forgetting all in the triumph of her beauty, in the glory of her success, in a sort of cloud of happiness comprised of all this homage, admiration, these awakened desires and of that sense of triumph which is so sweet to woman's heart. 路人甲：（叫住Mathilde，行礼）Oh madam. You look so beautiful. Can I bring you some drink? Mathilde：（还礼）Yes sir. Thank you. 路人甲：So what do you think of this party. Mathilde：Very nice. Well sir. What do you do. 路人甲：I am a merchant. Mathilde：Oh that sounds good. And what about your business?...... (随意闲聊) Thief：look at necklace. I want get it. It must worth a lot of money.（下手偷走项链，逃走） Mathilde：（与路人甲分手）It’s too late, I think I must go back, nice talking with you, see you next time. 路人甲：Hope to see you again in the future. （Mathilde来到门口，Husband来接她） Husband：Dear, what about the party? Mathilde：（开心）I had a very happy time there, thank you my darling. Husband：Wait a bit. You will catch cold outside.（为她披上衣服） （Mathilde披上衣服突然发现项链不见） Mathilde：（脸色惨白，颤抖）Oh my god! Husband：（惊慌）What is the matter with you? Mathilde：（声音颤抖）I have--I have--I've lost Madame Forestier's necklace.（大哭） Husband：What!--how? Impossible! （找寻她的全身）You're sure you had it on when you left the ball？ Mathilde：Yes, I felt it in the vestibule of the minister's house. But I didn’t notice when it gone. Husband：I think it’s not easy to find it. Mathilde：What shall I do? What shall I do? Husband：You must write to your friend that you have broken the clasp of her necklace and that you are having it mended. That will give us time to turn round. Mathilde：Then what? Husband：Then we shall go and buy another one exactly like the one we had lost. Mathilde：But the other necklace is nearly worth forty thousand francs! We can’t afford. Husband： （痛苦）But we must do it. We can borrow money first and we need to earn more money. Don’t worry my darling. I am sure we will pay off the debt one day.（搂住Mathilde肩膀） （旁白：） Mathilde came to know what heavy housework meant. She washed the dishes, using her dainty（精致） fingers and nails on greasy pots and pans. She washed the soiled linen, the shirts and the dishcloths, which she dried upon a line; she carried the slops down to the street every morning and carried up the water, stopping for breath at every landing. And dressed like a woman of the people, she went to the fruiterer, the grocer, the butcher, a basket on her arm, bargaining, defending her miserable money. Her husband worked evenings and late at night he often need to copy thousands page of manuscript. （夫妻二人表演辛苦工作） （第四幕：Mathilde公园长椅上，落魄） （旁白：）Ten years passed .At the end of ten years Mathilde and her husband had paid everything, everything, with the rates of usury（高利贷） and the accumulations of the compound interest（复利）. Madame Loisel looked old now. She had become the woman of impoverished households--strong and hard and rough. With frowsy hair, skirts askew and red hands, she talked loud while washing the floor with great swishes of water. But sometimes, she thought of that happy evening of long ago, of that ball where she had been so beautiful and so admired. What would have happened if she had not lost that necklace? Who knows? How strange and changeful is life! （Forestier走过来） Mathilde：Oh! That’s Forestier. She’s still young and charming.（站起身）Good-day, Forestier. Forestier：But--madame!--I do not know--You must have mistaken. Mathilde：No. I am Mathilde. Forestier：（惊讶）Oh, my poor Mathilde! How you are changed! Mathilde：Yes, I have had a pretty hard life, since I last saw you, and great poverty--and that because of you! Forestier：Of me! How so? Mathilde：Do you remember that diamond necklace you lent me to wear at the ministerial ball? Forestier：Yes. Well? Mathilde：Well, I lost it. Forestier：What do you mean? You brought it back. Mathilde：I brought you back another exactly like it. And it has taken us ten years to pay for it. You can understand that it was not easy for us, for us who had nothing. At last it is ended, and I am very glad. Forestier：（不敢相信）You say that you bought a necklace of diamonds to replace mine? Mathilde：Yes. You never noticed it, then!
