An investigator into the drug overdose(服药过量) death of Marilyn Monroe(玛 莲?梦露) 43 years ago Friday still is not convinced she killed herself. John W. Miner, who investigated Monroe's death as a Los Angeles County prosecutor, claims Monroe's psychologist, Dr. Ralph Greenson, played him secret audiotapes made by the star during one of her therapy sessions 1 before her death. A key 2 of the alleged (所谓的) tapes, according to Miner, is that Monroe was not 3 and was actively planning to become a serious Shakespearean actress. Miner says he took careful, handwritten notes of the tapes and later produced a near-exact transcript. There is no 4 Miner's claims are true, since Dr. Greenson is now dead and no one else claims to have heard the tape. "You are the only person who will ever know the most 5 thoughts of Marilyn Monroe," she allegedly told her doctor. In Miner's transcript, Monroe discussed her plans to 6 Shakespeare. "No 7 person could possibly think that the person who made those tapes killed herself," Miner said. She also may have recorded her feelings about having to 8 off her romance (罗曼史) with Robert Kennedy. "There is no room in my life for him," she allegedly said. "I guess I don't have the 9 to face up to it and hurt him. I want someone else to tell him it's over. I tried to get the President to do it, but I couldn't 10 him." A. proof [I] revelation B. reasonable [J] pursue C. postpone [K] courage D. secret [L] constantly E. bold [M] depressed F. break [N] assignment G. optimistic [O] reach [H] shortly Section B Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Passage One Only special plants can survive the terrible climate of a desert, for these are regions where the annual range of the soil temperature can be over 75?. Furthermore, during the summer there are few clouds in the sky to protect plants from the sun's ray. Another problem is the fact that there are frequently strong winds which drive small sharp particles of sand into the plants, tearing and damaging them. The most difficult problem for all forms of plant life, however, is the fact that the entire annual rainfall occurs during a few days or weeks in spring. Grasses and flowers in desert survive from one year to the next by existing through the long, hot, dry season in the form of seeds. These seeds remain inactive unless the right mount of rain falls, If no rain falls, or if insufficient rain falls, they wait until the next year. or even still the next. Another factor that helps these plants to survive is the fact that their life cycles are short. By the time that the water from the spring rains disappears--just a few weeks after it fall--such plants no longer need ally. The perennials(多年生植物) have special features which enable them to survive as plants for several years. Thus, nearly all desert perennials have extensive root systems below ground and a small shoot system above ground. The large root network enables the plant to absorb as much water as possible in a short time. The small shoot system, on the other hand, considerably limits water loss by evaporation(蒸发). Another feature of many desert perennials is that after the rainy season they lose their leaves in preparation for the long, dry season, just as trees in wetter climates lose theirs in preparation for the winter. This reduces their water loss by evaporation during the dry season. Then, in the next rainy season, they come fully alive once more, and grow new branches, leaves and flowers, just as the grasses and flowers in desert do. 11、 Ordinary plants cannot survive the desert weather as a result of the following EXCEPT for ______. A. the strong winds C. the long summer days B. the strong sun's ray D. the high soil temperature 12、 Some grasses and flowers can survive in the desert because ______. A. they need little water for their survival B. they bear long roots and the seeds are fit for dry weather C. they stay in the form of seeds to wait for the right amount of water D. with long roots, they do not depend on the shoot system to get enough water 13、 We can learn from the passage that the shoot system of the perennials ______. A. can help the perennials absorb less of the sun's ray B. decides the appearance of the perennials in desert C. limits the function of the perennials' branches D. may prevent the perennials from losing much water 14、 According to the passage, spring is the best time for plants in desert ______. A. to find a shady place C. to reduce water loss B. to get water from their growth D. to enjoy the sunshine 15、 The last paragraph is mainly about ______. A. the comparison between plants in different areas B. the growth of new leaves in the rainy season C. water loss by evaporation in the dry season D. the changes in the leaves of the perennials Passage Two E1 Nino is a disturbance of the world's normal climate pattern. During El Nino events, the westerly trade winds become slower and the warmer water in the western Pacific moves towards South America. This huge increase in ocean temperatures--as much as eight degrees centigrade--and the change in atmospheric conditions bring rain to the deserts of South America and the rainforests of south-east Asia, with drought conditions throughout eastern and southern Africa. There are many knock-on effects all over the world. The home of El Nino is Peru. El Nino, "the Christ Child", was first named by Peruvian fishermen one Christmas when they noticed unusual warm currents affecting the Pacific coast of South America. Up and down the country, from desert m highlands, E1 Nino weather phenomena have brought destructive floods, costing ,200 million in immediate and long-term damage, and undoing the work of many development projects. "The dastruction is near total," Dominic Brain, a worker for Christian Aid reported. "Few of the houses could withstand the floodwater. Today I visited Acomayo, a shantytown (贫民区) where 17,500 people once live. Now only ten percent of the houses are still standing. The bulk of the population has lost all their possessions. The town of Ica seldom sees rain. Houses for the poor are built of adobe--sun- baked mud standing side by side in long terraces. When the River Ica burst its banks in late January, 15,000 houses were swiftly flooded. Up to 5,000 houses were destroyed--a sign not only of the force of the river, which loosened huge rocks and swept them falling down born the Andean mountains, but of the vulnerability of the homes which hardly ever face rain. "They melted like chocolate," exclaimed an eye witness. "The extent of the damage was terrible!" Almost immediately health became a problem. Without proper plumbing(排 水), waste matter rose to the surface of the floodwaters. People received cuts walking through the floodwater and mud Cholera--epidemic in Peru in the early nineties-- returned, with 90 reported cases in Ica province alone. The entire city seems to have drowned--first in floodwaters 1.5 meters high, and then in mud. Sadly, three people lost their lives, sucked into the floodwaters, but it was a miracle that there were not more casualties(伤亡者). 16、 E1 Nino is a warm ocean current _____. A. which centers on America and Africa B. which kills many people ever time C. which was named by an American D. which has side-effects all over the world 17、 It can be inferred from the passage that El Nino first appeared in _____. A. Pacific C. South America B. Africa D. Peru 18、 Houses in Ica experienced terrible destruction during the E1 Nino event because _____. A. tile El Nino event was the strongest B. it seldom rained there C. the houses couldn't stand the flood D. E1 Nino was unexpected 19、 How did the three people in lea lose their lives? A. They died in the collapsed houses. B. They died of an epidemic. C. They were carried away by the flood. D. They tried to walk in the floodwater. 20、 This passage is devoted to introduction to _____. A. the causes and effects of E1 Nino weather phenomena B. the worldwide monitoring network set up to predict E1 Nino C. the relationship between the ocean temperatures and climate patterns D. E1 Nino phenomena and destructive effects of one E1 Nino event on lea 强化训练二 Section A Directions: In this section, there is a passage with ten blanks. The doctors were reporting the 21 for the Uinted States National Academy of Sciences. They say that brain diseases 22 at least 250 million people in the developing world. These diseases include strokes(中风), epilepsy (癫痫) and 23 sickness such as schizophrenia (精神分裂症) and depression (抑郁症). They also include 24 development of the nervous system, which causes mental slowness and cerebral palsy(脑瘫). Doctor Murthy says there are two reasons for this. One is a lack of money. The other is a lack of human 25 . For example, a recent study shows that doctors who 26 mental sicknesses are not enough in most developing countries. Another 27 to action against brain diseases is the unfair way in which the public acts toward victims. Many victims of brain diseases are treated 28 . The committee say there are effective and 29 cost medical treatments for these diseases. Yet these treatments are not often provided in developing countries. The committee says more treatments should be offered to poor countries. It says health care systems in developing countries should provide mental health services for their people. The committee says efforts should be made to increase public 30 of brain diseases. Finally, the committee says national research programs should be established to study brain diseases. But today, education and administrations are finding that instances of academic dishonesty on the part of students have become more frequent-- and are less likely to be punished--than in the past. Cheating appears to have gained acceptance among good and poor students alike. Why is student cheating on the rise? No one really knows. Some blame the trend on a general loosening of moral values among today's youth. Others have attributed increased cheating to the fact that today's youth are far more pragmatic(实际的) than their idealistic predecessors. Whereas in the late sixties and early seventies, students were filled with visions about changing the world, today's students feel great pressure to conform and succeed. In interviews with students at high schools and colleges around the country, both young men and women said that cheating bad become easy. Some suggested they did it out of spite for teachers they did not respect. Others looked at it as a game. Only if they were caught, some said, would they feel guilty. "People are competitive," said a second-year college student named Anna, from Chicago. "There's an underlying fear. If you don't do well, your life is going to be ruined. The pressure is not only from parents and friends but from yourself. To achieve. To succeed. It's almost as though we have to outdo other people to achieve our own goals." Edward Wynne, editor of a magazine blames the rise in academic dishonesty on the schools. He claims that administrators and teachers have been too hesitant to take action. Dwight Huber, chairman of the English Department at Amarillo sees the matter differently, blaming the rise in cheating on the way students evaluated. "I would cheat if I felt I was being cheated," Mr. Huber said. He feels that as long as teachers give short-answer tests rather than essay questions and rate students by the number of facts they can memorize rather than by how well they can synthesize information, students will try to beat the system. "The concept of cheating is based on the false assumption that the system is legitimate and there is something wrong with the individuals who's doing it," he said. "That's too easy an answer. We've got to start looking at the system." 31、 Educators are finding that students who cheat ______. A. have poor academic records B. use the information in late years C. are more likely to be punished than before D. can be academically weak or strong 32、 According to the passage, which of the following statements is tree? A. Punishment is an effective method of stopping cheating. B. A change in the educational system will eliminate the need to cheat. C. Students do not cheat on essay tests. D. The problem of student cheating has its roots in deeper problems. 33、 Which of the following statements reflects information in the passage? A. The student who cheats must be at fault because the system is correct. B. The 1960's vision of changing the world led students to conform. C. Punishment for cheaters has always been severe in this country. D. The educational system and its administrators are partly to blame for the rise in the cheating. 34、 The phrase "the individuals" in Line 9, Para.3 refers to "______". A. teachers who are too hesitant to take actions against cheating B. students who practice cheating C. parents who put pressure on their children D. school administrators who approve of short-answer tests 35、 The author probably would agree with the point of view that ______. A. parents alone must take responsibility for the rise in student cheating B. the educational system is sound, and students must follow every rule C. the educational system in this country would benefit from a thorough evaluation D. students who cheat should be expelled from school Passage Two Time and how we experience it have puzzled physicists who have created fascinating theories. But their time is measured by a pendulum (钟摆) and is not psychological time, which leaps with little regard to the clock or calendar. As someone who understood the distinction observed, "When you sit with a girl for two hours, it seems like a minute, but when you sit on hot stove, a minute seems like two hours." Psychologists have noticed that larger units of time. such as months and years, fly on swifter wings as we age. They also note that the more time is structured with schedule and appointments, the more rapidly it seems to pass. For example, a day at the beach. Since most of us spend fewer days at the beach and more at the office, an increase in structured time could well be to blame why time seems to speed up as we grow older. Expectation and familiarity also make time seem to flow more rapidly. Almost all of us have had the experience of driving somewhere we've never been before. Surrounded by unfamiliar scenery, with no real notion of when we'll arrive, we experience the trip as lasting a long time. But the return trip, although exactly as long, seems to take far less time. The novelty of the outward journey has become routine. Thus taking a different route on occasions can often help slow the clock. When days become as identical as beads(珠子) on a string, they blend together, and even months become a single day. To counter this, try to find ways to interrupt the structure of your day--to stop time, so to speak. Learning something new is another way to slow the passage of time. One of the reasons the days of our youth seem so full and long is that these are the days of learning and discovery. 36、 The purpose of this passage is to ______. A. show the different ideas of physicists and psychologists on time B. state the principles of time C. describe various notions about time D. explain why time flies and how to slow it down 37、 The quotation in the first paragraph is used to indicate that ______. A. physical time and psychological time are quite different B. with little regard of a clock or calendar, psychological time is quite puzzling C. time should not be measured by a pendulum D. physical theory has nothing to do with the true sense of time 38、 According to the passage, when people live an identical and routine life, time seems to ______. A. stop C. stow down B. speed up D. be in a psychological sense 39、 What makes time seem to flow more rapidly? A. An excursion to an unfamiliar place. B. Office work structured with schedules. C. Life of a businessman filled with new appointments. D. The learning of something difficult and interesting. 40、 The word "novelty" (Line 5, Para. 4 ) means ____. A. unfamiliarity C. excitement B. amusement D. distinction 强化训练三 Section A Directions: In this section, there is a passage with ten blanks. After World War II, the miracle of Japan's economic growth was achieved through technological 42 and a cheap, well- trained laboratorian. This innovation, however, was based on 43 basic technologies or concepts from the United States and Europe and improving them. The economic success of this 44 approach ended about a decade ago because of the 45 of the Japanese yen, an increase in labor costs and the 46 of other countries in East and Southeast Asia. To achieve further economic development, Japan must develop 47 technologies that promise benefits. This change is not easy, however, because all 48 of Japanese society--including political circles, administration, industry, and education--have 49 been oriented to catching up 50 . A. innovation [I] growth B. strength [J] economically C. sectors [K] catch-up D. turning [L] decreasing E. creativity [M] introducing F. breakthrough [N] previously G. stretch [O] invention [H] exhaustion 答案: 强化训练一 Section A 1、[H] 2、[I] 3、[M] 4、[A] 5、[D] 6、[J] 7、[B] 8、[F] 9、[K] 10、[O] Section B Passage One 11、C 细节题。 Passage Two 16、D 细节题。题中提到的warm ocean currents和第一段中所说的huge increase in ocean temperatures是同一回事。第一段倒数第二句话提到了海洋水温的升高影响了很多地方,比如South America,south-east Asia, eastern and southern Africa,最后一句话又指出There are many knock-on effects all over the world,因此D为正确答案。 17、D 推理题。题干问的是厄尔尼诺现象最初的发生地点,即第二段第一句话所说的the home of E1 Nino,因此D是正确答案。 18、C 细节题:文章第四段提到了当地很多房屋都是用adobe(泥砖)建造的,经不住洪水的冲击,倒数第三句中再次提到了the vulnerability of the homes。因此答案为C。 19、C 细节题。根据题中的关键词three people可以在文章最后一段最后一句话找到相关介绍。该句中的sucked into the floodwater作为原因状语,解释了 three people lost their lives 的原因。因此答案为C。 20、D 主旨题。整篇文章主要分为两个部分,前三段介绍了E1 Nino的形成及影响,后两段介绍了它对秘鲁小镇Ica的破坏作用。 强化训练二 Section A 21、[N] 22、[E] 23、[K] 24、[G] 25、[O] 26、[B] 27、 [D] 29、[M] 30、[A] [J] 28、 Section B Passage One 31、D 细节题。 Passage Two 36、D 推理题。文章首先指出人在心理上感受的时间与客观上的时间是不一样的。之后列举了令人感觉时光飞逝的原因,最后作者介绍了怎样可以使人感觉时间过得不那么快。B和C在文章开头部分提到,但不全面;A文中没有涉及。 37、A 细节题。文章第一段后半部分举例说:和一位漂亮姑娘一起坐两小时,你感觉似乎才过了一分钟;但坐在一个热火炉上,你却感觉一分钟是两个小时。从这个例子可以看出,作者想告诉我们心理时间和客观上的时间是有差异的。干扰项C中提到的time概念过于宽泛,应该确切地指出是physical time。选项D观点太绝对,而选项B文中没有涉及。 38、B 细节题。文章第三段第一句…the more time is structured with schedule and appointments, the more rapidly it seems to pass(日程安排得越紧凑,约会越多,人们就感觉时间过得越快),意思和B很接近,故选B。 39、B 细节题。文章第三段第一句…the more time is structured with schedule and appointments, the more rapidly it seems to pass,因此选B,同时排除C。根据文章最后一段第一句:Learning something new is another way to slow the passage of time(学习新东西是使时间变慢的另一种),可以排除A和D。 40、A 语义题。第四段举了个例子:当你去了个不熟悉的、没去过的地方时,你似乎觉得旅途花了很长时间;但当你原路返回的时候,车外不熟悉的景物已经变得熟悉起来了,你就觉得一会儿就到了。因此novelty的意思应该和 routine相反,即“不熟悉”。 强化训练三 Section A 41、 [D] 42、 [A] 43、 [M] 44、 [K] 45、 [B] 46、 [I] 47、 [F] 48、 [C] 49、 [N] 50、 [J]
