A: This is basically a correct observation, which says something about the American way of life. Americans like to do business without leaving their cars. Wherever you go, you'll see drive-in banks, drive-in restaurants, drive-in churches and drive-in movies. A: Yes, you can. When you drive in the U. S. , it's a good idea to have an international driver's license if you are a foreigner and don't have a state license. Each of the fifty states of the U. S. has its own traffic laws. Drivers are expected to know and understand the local laws even if they don't live in a particular state. You can get information when you cross the border into a different state at a tourist information center. A: Yes. In most states, the speed limit on the expressway is 55 miles per hour, or about 88 kilometers per hour. On some roads, such as state or federal expressways, there is a minimum speed of 40 miles per hour, or about 65 kilometers per hour. A: Of course we do. This country has the most developed car rental industry in the world. The two largest American car rental companies, Hertz and Avis, have offices all over the U. S., with counters at most airports and in many international cities. Other national car rental companies you can find at airports, such as Thrifty, National, Budger or Dollar, have offices in other countries too, so you may want to reserve a car through your travel agent in your own country. A: In order to rent a car, you have to have a major credit card, such as MasterCard, Visa, or American Express. Without a credit card you may have to pay a very high deposit on the car. If you don't want to spend a lot of money, you may rent used cars from used car rental companies, such as Rent-A-Junker and Ugly Duckling. Their rates are often lower and they don't always demand a credit card. Sometimes they have special offers that make the total cost of renting a car even lower. A: There are three ways to get from city to city without a car. In some places, you can take Amtrak, the national passenger rail service. Or you can take a bus. Greyhound is the largest long distance coach company, which offers the monthly pass. And, of course, you can fly. There are dozens of airlines, both regional and national. Prices are not regulated, so airlines can make special offers that are sometimes cheaper than train tickets. There are also shuttle and commuter flights between some major cities that are close to each other. A: Well, I have to admit that getting around a city on public transportation is generally not as easy as it is in most other countries, but it is possible. Although only a few cities have subways, most towns with a population of 50,000 or more have some kind of city bus service. A: You can always take a cab. You can stop a cab on the street, but that's not easy in many cities. It's actually easier to call a taxi company listed in the Yellow Pages of a telephone directory and ask them to send a cab to your door. American taxi drivers will usually expect a tip of at least 10%. In big cities like New York, cabbies expect a tip of 15%. A: You're welcome. Q: It is said that the United States is country driven by automobiles, and Americans are actually a people living on wheels. Q: If I visit the United States with a tourist's visa, can I drive in the country? Q: In China, drivers have to drive under a posted speed limit on some roads. Is there any national speed limit in the U. S.? A:是的。 Q: As a visitor on a business trip, I don't need to buy a car in order to travel in America. I suppose you have some kind of car rental service, don't you? O: How do I pay for my rental service? Q: If I don't have a license, how do I travel between cities? Q: I heard the city public transportation system in your country is not very desirable. Is that so? Q: What do I do in case I can't get where I want to by bus or subway? Q: Thank you very much for the information. A:不用谢。 B: Hi, Mr. Chen, it's been ten months since I left China. I would like to discuss with you the possibilities of establishing a joint venture with your company to manufacture cordless phones and mobile phones. A:好极了。 B: Yes, you did a good job. The whole idea of my investing in a joint enterprise with your company is the direct result of your wonderful lecture. Your answers were direct and honest. And your explanations were sincere and persuasive. May I get on China's economic express train and share your economic gains? B: I did a lot of research in the market of telecommunications equipment lately. There's a potential market for cordless and mobile phones in China and the world as a whole. Initially, I would like to embark on this joint venture business at a moderate rate and a safe scale. My suggestion for the amount of total capital investment is in the vicinity of eight million US dollars, a lucky number in China, I suppose. A:很好。 B: My contribution is 50% of the total investment, including the construction funds and the cost of all the imported equipment, and the engineers, technicians and management staff from my home company. B: You're absolutely right. B: I love renminbi. And I have heard that the Chinese yuan will become a convertible currency soon. But I accept your proposal and we will be responsible for the international marketing of two- thirds of the mobile phones. A:好极了。 B: Two more questions. One concerns the term of our partnership and the other the management's structure of the venture. B: That's quite logical. May 1 suggest that we set up a board of directors tor the management of the company and share rights and obligations as equal partners? B: That's fine. I like to work with you, as I did before. It's been a very rewarding day. B: You, too. Establishing a Joint Venture A :I'm so happy to see you again, Mr. Roberts. May l help you in any way? A: That's great. Your investment proposal is a very wise decision. Our company is also seeking foreign investment in a manufacturing company for cordless and mobile phones. Your initiative is most welcome. I remember talking to you about the matter of foreign investment in China a year ago, Mr. Roberts. A: Of course. Welcome aboard, Mr. Roberts! Let's get down to the business of this joint venture. May I have some idea of your proposal? A: Very good. Eight million is more than a lucky number; it's the right number for the initiation of this joint venture, as I under- stand it. But how much would your share of investment be in this partnership? A: I like the idea of a 50 to 50 investment partnership, in which case there will be a 50 to 50 distribution in business management and profits share. A: The problem then involves the marketing of the manufactured products. Cordless phones are in high demand in China, but we can't guarantee a 50% domestic marketing of mobile phones. Be sides, we need to increase our foreign exchange reserve for the rainy day. May I suggest that you market at least 65% of the to- tal number of mobile phones internationally? I believe you need more foreign currency than our renminbi. A: That's beautiful. A: As for the term of the partnership, let's start with a 15 year term for this joint venture, and extend the contract later if both parties wish to continue the partnership. What do you say to this? A: That coincides with our usual practice. Shall we hold another round of discussion next week on some technical problems in a more detailed way? A: Yes, indeed. Have a nice weekend, Mr. Roberts! A:Excuse me, sir; is this prof . Tallack from London? May I know your major interests? B: I’m interested in the general layout of the Park. Would you please give me some idea of its setup? A:Very good. First of all, we’ll take a bird’s-eye view of the Park. And then we’ll look around in the Park and, to use a Chinese metaphor, we’ll cast a passing glance at flowers while riding on horseback‖. B:Good idea, but we’ll cast a passing glance at flowers while riding on your car… in a more comfortable manner. A: I really like your humor, sir. Now let me come back to our story. Jinghe High-Tech Park enjoys a superior location, with the Capital Beijing as the backdrop, facing the vast expanse of the Bo Sea, bordered by the Jingjintang Expressway to the east. It takes only 30 minutes to reach the Capital’s International Airport, 20 minutes to get to the Beijing Railway Cargo Station, and an hour to arrive at the Tianjin New Harbor. The Park is a national development project approved by the State Council. It is authorized to approve projects with preferential policies, operating under the management system of international standards. B: When was it put to use? Who fuelled its development? A: The construction of the Park was undertaken in two phases with the first covering 588 acres comprising 28 industrial lots as well as R&D, administrative and support facilities. And the second phase covers an area of 525 acres with 22 industrial lots. The Part went into its full operation in 2000, supported by the generous loans from 5 Chinese banks and 2 overseas banks. B: The Park is well planned and arranged in perfect order. A: Yes, it is. A golf course lies on its east, the Moon River to its west, and a kilometer-wide green belt to its north. Inside the Park, industries cluster in the east and residences concentrate in the west. In-between you find the public service area. B: What do you do to attract direct foreign investment? A:The Park Administration takes strong measures to improve the investment environment, to foster new competitive advantages, and to make the Park an investment paradise in North China for hi-tech and new-tech companies, multinationals, and large enterprises of pillar industries. The Park’s two leading industries are information technology and modern biotechnology. B: Are there any particular requirements that prospective foreign enterprises must meet? A:The tar get industries must meet the Park’s selection criteria. That is, they must strengthen research and development functions, use locally available technical resources and materials, develop suitable supporting industries, and Multinational companies from the United States, Japan, Korea, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Canada, Australia, Holland and Norway have settled down in the Park. The Park enjoys strong government support and has complete high-tech industry chains. It focuses on the integration of industry, education, and R&D. The Park provides a stream-lined one-stop service for incoming enterprises. B: The physical environment of the Park is wonderful. A: Yes, it is one of the things that we take so much pride in. The Park Administration has been pursuing the policy of ecological conservation and sustainable development. To ensure the quality of the local environment, we stick steadfastly to our development strategy of ―attracting investment with a green environment and maintaining a gr een environment through investment‖. As you can see, the Park has a green coverage of more than 45%. It really boasts stretches of green grass, forests of green trees, streams murmuring, birds chirping, air refreshing, fragrant flowers blossoming all year round. The whole environment is enveloped in a peaceful, elegant and relaxing atmosphere. B: You’re a real poet. Do you have independent and complete establishments for water and power supply, and for waste treatment? A: Yes, the Park has an independent techno-support and security service center, which is equipped with high-standard facilities for water and electricity supply and provides the enterprises with reliable, stable and quality power, clean water, internet maintenance services, as well as a 24-hour security service. B: That’s wonderful. I'm very happy to have the opportunity to talk to you about major traditional Chinese holidays. Like in the rest of the world, holidays in China are a time for serious cooking and delighted eating. Grocery markets are well stocked with all kinds of fish and meat and shopping and cooking become major activities. But in addition to the quantitative and qualitative differences apparent in holiday meals, some special traditional foods and their symbolic significance are indispensable on these occasions. The Dragon Boat Festival on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month (around early June) is celebrated in memory of Qu Yuan, an ancient poet and loyal minister who drowned himself while in exile from a corrupt court. Zongzi, a kind of glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves, were originally prepared as sacrificial offerings for Qu Yuan's departed soul and dropped into the river where he drownedhimself. Today, however, dragon boat races are held during the festival and the zongzi are consumed by the living. The Mid-autumn Festival Which occurs on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month (around mid-September) is an occasion for viewing the full moon. The round moon is a symbol for completeness, and by extension, family reunion. The specialty of the day is the yuebing (mooncake), a round pastry filled with nuts, candied preservedfruits, bean paste, duck egg yolks, etc. The Spring Festival, the Chinese lunar New Year, is celebrated according to the lunar calendar, and generally occurs some time in the first half of February. Customarily, lavishly consuming food and drink is a major activity. In addition to the popular seafood, poultry and meat, regional custom dictates the preparation and consumption of traditional favorites, for example, jiaozi (boiled dumplings) inBeijing, babaofan (a steamed sweet glutinous rice pudding) in Shanghai, and the soup of small rice-balls (cooked with pork and chicken) in Guangzhou. Throughout China, niangao (literally meaning the "year cake" , a thick steamed pudding of glutinous rice flour)is made in a great variety of shapes and flavors. The character gao inthe word niangao is homonymous with the word "high", suggesting"growing up and prospering" in the new year 开幕 Ladies and gentlemen, May I hereby declare open "Shanghai International Symposium on Community Service". First of all, permit me, on behalf of the organizing committee of the symposium, to extend our warm welcome to the leaders of the Shanghai Municipal Government, leaders of social organizations, representatives of the Community Social Workers' Association and guests from various circles! Our warm welcome goes also to the friends from Canada as welt as from other countries and regions. I wish to express our sincere thanks to the Langara Community College of Vancouver, Canada, whose generous help has made possible the successful commencement of this symposium. The establishment and development of China's socialist market economy requires the reform and improvement in our social welfare and security system, which in turn places higher expectations for community services. With the transformation of governmental functions, much of the work involving social services that was initially undertaken by the government will have to be transferred gradually to social groups and non-governmental organizations. On the one hand, the government will shoulder greater responsibilities in its micromanagement and on the other hand, social groups and non-government organizations will need to involve themselves in more community services. Consequently, there has emerged an issue which concerns the ways of a close collaboration and the division of responsibilities between the government and social groups, in order to further the development of community service. Some developed countries and regions have accumulated much experience in this regard, which merits our reference and study. It is with the purpose of sharing our views on this issue that we are hosting this symposium. I believe the symposium will prove to be constructive and significant in promoting the prosperous development of China's community service program as well as China's economic development and social stability. I also believe that our symposium is bound for abundant accomplishment through your hard work. In conclusion, I wish the symposium a complete success. I wish our overseas experts and scholars, and Chinese friends from various parts of the country a pleasant stay in Shanghai. Ladies and gentlemen, May I hereby declare open "Shanghai International Symposium on Community Service". You will find this two-week trip one of your most memorable experiences in your life. The Silk Road dates back to the second century B. C. when a Chinese official and envoy of the royal court Zhang Qian embarked on his business trip to Xiyu (meaning western countries) following this trade thoroughfare linking Asia and Europe. Originating from Chang'an (the present-day Xi'an), the route traversed Shaanxi Province, the Hexi Corridor in Gansu Province, the Tarim Basin in Xinjiang, the Pamir mountain region, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq and Syria, ending at the eastern shores of the Mediterranean. More than 4,000 of its 7,000 kilometers were in China. For over a thousand years up till the 15th century, China brought its silk cloth and goods, gunpowder, and paper making and printing techniques to the West via this road. This road, in return, introduced into China Buddhism and Islam as well as grapes, walnuts, pomegranates, cucumbers, glass, perfume and other products from the outside world. Because China's silk reached the West along this road, European scholars came to call it the "Silk Road". A wealth of historical relics, fascinating scenery and interesting local cultures along the Silk Road makes this long trip one of the world's most exciting tourist attractions. Many Chinese ethnic minorities scatter along the Chinese portion of the road, all courteous and hospitable to visitors from the rest of the world. The food and crafts in the region are different from those in central China. And the folk lore is simply exotic and colorful. The Silk Road Tour our travel agency offers will start from the ancient city of Xi'an and ends at Urumqi of Xinjiang. The tour will also cover Lanzhou, Dunhuang and Turpan. All along the route, you will take pleasure in the charms of the natural landscape, appreciate the superior workmanship of ancient artists, enjoy local delicacies and meet local people. The trip will certainly leave you sweet memories that you will share with your family and friends. A Wish to Invest、 A:Hi, Mr. Roberts B: Hi, Mr. Chen. l have been thinking about something lately and I'd like to share with you my thoughts. A:I'd like to hear them. And I'll be very happy if I can help you with anything. B: In the West everybody is talking about going to the East and making an investment. Apparently a growing number of foreign firms have been pouring into China, and the Pudong area of Shanghai is among the best choices of their investment destinations. Today it is not a matter of whether to go east, but when and how. A:You're absolutely right. Overseas investment in Shanghai and its surrounding areas has quadrupled in recent years. There are many reasons for this rising investment fever. Apart from the fact that China is one of the fast growing economies in the world, the Chinese central government and local governments focus a lot of their attention on opening the whole country up to the outside world, both the coastal cities and the country's interior areas. They are doing all they can to attract foreign investment. On the other hand, many institutional and individual investors overseas find it more profitable to invest directly in China than just to do trade with Chinese companies. B: I'm not sure if I understand the logic behind this preference. I'm all ears to your explanation. A:OK. Basically, direct foreign investment in China maximizes the strengths of both parties concerned. China has massive land, abundant natural resources, huge cheap labor, low taxation, a growing consumer market, improving infrastructure and of course, a stable social and political environment with attractive investment policies. All these are rarely found elsewhere in the world. Foreign investors from developed countries or areas, on the other hand, have sufficient funds, advanced technology and managerial expertise. Direct investment in China will yield higher economic returns than import and export trade. B: You're right. I have friends who are interested in direct invest- ment in China. Do you have any idea of the best place in which to invest? A:Personally, I like you to invest in the Pudong area of Shanghai. Not because it's my hometown, but it really is an ideal place for investment. If you or your friends are interested, I have a lot of investment literature for you to study. I also have heard of many very successful stories of foreign investment in China's inland areas and other coastal cities. There's really no the best place. There might be a better place at a given time. B: My next question concerns the forms of investment that are allowed in China currently. A:Among others you can invest in a joint venture with a Chinese partner, or establish a business independently, that is, set up a company solely funded and owned by a foreign investor. B: What are the differences? A:With a joint venture, a foreign partner usually brings into the enterprise or business capital funds, machinery, advanced technology and management, while the Chinese partner supplies land, labor and a portion of the funds for the infrastructure_ The business is then jointly run by both parties. As for the solely foreign-funded business, you provide all the funds and take all the benefits as well as risks. You can run the company in whatever way you prefer, within the boundary of Chinese laws, of course. B: Your explanations are very enlightening. If we ever decide to invest in Shanghai, we'd like you to be our Chinese consultant. I hope you won't refuse our offer then. A:It's my honor. And I'm looking forward to the early arrival of that day A: Hi, Mr. Roberts. A: I'd like to hear them. And I'll be very happy if I can help you with anything. A: You're absolutely right. A: OK. A: Personally, I like you to invest in the Pudong area of Shanghai. A: Among others you can invest in a joint venture with a Chinese partner, or establish a business independently, that is, set up a company solely funded and owned by a foreign investor. A : With a joint venture, a foreign partner usually brings into the enterprise or business capital funds, machinery, advanced technology and management, while the Chinese partner supplies land, labor and a portion of the funds for the infrastructure_ The business is then jointly run by both parties. As for the solely foreign-funded business, you provide all the funds and take all the benefits as well as risks. You can run the company in whatever way you prefer, within the boundary of Chinese laws, of course. My distinguished guests, On this most beautiful moon-lit evening, on behalf of General Manager Ms. Mei and all my colleagues of the company, I wish to thank all the people here for taking the time off their busy schedule, at the busiest time of the year, to come to our Chinese New Year's party. We really appreciate your presence here tonight with us. In particular, we are very fortunate tonight to have the attendance of our friends with the Benson's Electronics Company, who came here all the way from Canada. I feel very proud and honored to have such a distinguished group of guests with us, in our celebration of our Spring Festival. We did and will continue to do our best to make this evening most relaxing, most enjoyable and most memorable for you. I hope you will have a good time tasting the traditional Chinese cuisine and drinking the unique Chinese wine to your heart's content. So help yourself. Later on, you will enjoy the authentic Chinese entertainment performed by some talented young employees from our company. We will have a lot of fun tonight. While at work in the company, we, Chinese as well as overseas staff of the company, hardly get to sit down and talk to each other. I hope this party will give us an excellent opportunity to get to know each other better in a more informal way and increase personal friendships. Ladies and gentlemen, I'd like to thank you again for coming to the party. And I wish everyone of you good health and the very best of luck in everything in the new year. Banquet Service A: Ladies and gentlemen, good evening. It gives me a great pleasure to host the banquet in honor of our dear friends and dedicated experts, and celebrate the successful conclusion of our talks. In particular, I’d like to thank Ms. Kelland for her coming. Without her last-minute effort, we would still be in the middle of nowhere, probably in the middle of negotiations, I’m afraid. B:Thank you, President Li. You all did very well. I just contributed my share. We all maneuvered successfully to get our job done, so to speak. Well, ladies and gentlemen, are we carrying out another round of talk over the dinner? A:No more business talks today. We’ve already put an end to it. I propose we limit our talk to friendship tonight. And of course, we’ll delight ourselves completely in the foods that Mother Nature grants us. B: That’s great, the delicious Chinese food! I can’t wait to enjoy your food. What are we expecting tonight? A:Tonight we have prepared a typical Shanghai meal. I hope you will like it. B: Yes, eat in Shanghai as Shanghai people eat. But, to be frank, I’ve heard of the famous Cantonese food, Sichuan food, Shandong food, but not that much of Shanghai food. What’s special about Shanghai cuisine? A: Shanghai cuisine, usually called Benbang cuisine, is the youngest among the major regional cuisines in China, with a history of more 400 years. Like all other Chinese regional cuisines, Benbang cuisine takes ―color, aroma and taste‖ as its essential quality elements. It emphasizes in particular the expert use of seasonings, the selection of raw materials with quality texture, and original flavors. B: It sounds very appetizing. A: I’d like to recommend a special snack known as Nanxiang Steamed Meat Dumplings and a special dish called ―Squirrel-Shaped Mandarin Fish‖. Nanxiang Steamed Meat Dumplings are small in size, with thin and translucent wrappers, filled inside with ground pork and rich tasty soup. The Squirrel-Shaped Mandarin Fish is yellow-colored and squirrel-shaped, with a crispy skin and tender meat, all covered with a sweet and sour source. They are absolutely tasters’ choice. I bet you will like them. B: Oh, I suppose they are the perfect combination of the three elements ―color, aroma and taste‖. E specially the Squirrel-Shaped Mandarin Fish. I can’t figure out how the chef makes the disk look like a squirrel. Shall we add ―appearance‖ to your judgment criteria? A:Absolutely right, plus ―appearance‖ – that makes the fourth element. OK, here we are. Please help yourself to the dishes. B:The dinner is so delicious. The dishes are complete with color, aroma, taste and appearance. Thank you very much for your invitation and hospitality. I hope I haven’t
