赌博的坏处 英文版 Today, I would like to talk about something about gambling. Do you think gambling is dangerous? Well, somebody says yes and somebody says no. But I consider gambling is dangerous. It is just like a social evil. Some people may think that I take the problem too serious. They think gambling is actually playing games of chance, such as cards, for money. And it’s wonderful that they can earn live by gambling and get rich quickly without work. It is true that in a game of chance, one of the parties must lose money; however, the gain of the other cannot be called robbery since both parties willingly agree to run the risk. So they don’t think there is any problem about gambling. Perhaps a comparison of gambling with dueling will help us see why they are wrong and why gambling is evil. In a duel, as in a game of chance, both parties willingly agree to run a risk. But in civilized countries, dueling is a crime because law and order in the state will break down if every citizen can take the law into his own hands and avenge an injury himself. Gambling is condemned for the same reason: the effect of gambling is injurious not only to the individuals but also to society. The costs of gambling problems can be high, not only for individuals but for families and communities. As we all know, the probability of winning in gambling is always much lower than losing. The gamblers often win a little at first but lose a lot later. So the gamblers experience physical and psychological stress and exhibit substantial rates of depression, alcohol and drug dependence and suicidal ideation. It often ends up in theft and robbery, even in crimes of violence. The families of pathological gamblers experience physical and psychological abuse as well as harassment and threats from bill collectors and creditors. Other significant impacts include costs to employers, creditors, insurance companies, social service agencies and the civil and criminal justice systems. Here is an example. Cai Jianzhong was an owner of a big hotel in Taizhou. Every year, he earned more than 3 millions. Because of gambling, he sold his hotel and lost everything he had. For he didn’t want to stop it. His wife and children left him during that time. After that, he decided to give up gambling. But he found he couldn’t control himself and continued to gambling by borrowing money from the bank. Every time he gambled, he would lose some million. At last, he couldn’t pat back the money and had to cheat the bank and from other people to get the money. Now the police had caught him and he had to go to jail. The employees in his hotel lost their work and can’t get their wages. The bank had to lose their money, too. Cai Jianzhong is no special. There are many people who like him that give everything to gambling and get nothing back. So now, we can say gambling is dangerous. It does great harm to gamblers and society. Please remember, gambling is like a drug, just one hit and the addiction starts. So stop before you begin.
