Christ Has Purchased Our Freedom Aren?t you glad that you don?t have to earn your release from the bondage of your sins? I am so glad that it is based on what Jesus Christ has done for us. Galatians 3:13 tells us, “Christ has bought us out from under the doom of that impossible system by taking the curse for our wrongdoing upon himself…” (TLB). That?s right, Jesus has purchased our freedom from the curse of the law, „that impossible system,? by changing places with us, and putting Himself under that curse. What a sacrifice He made on the cross to redeem us from our sins and all sin?s penalty! We are no longer under the curse of sin. We do not have to try to do enough good works to save ourselves from our lost state. Instead, we are made in right standing with God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Now, we have a new nature, we are children of God, and saved unto good works. So, we do good deeds because we are good, not do good deeds to be good. Titus 2:14 sums it up, “He died under God's judgment against our sins so that he could rescue us from constant falling into sin and make us his very own people, with cleansed hearts and real enthusiasm for doing kind things for others,” (TLB). What does it mean to be purchased from the curse? The Bible shows us in Deuteronomy 28 the curses that are allowed to come upon us if we do not obey God?s law, and the blessings we receive if we do obey God?s law. But, of course, since Jesus purchased our freedom from the curse we don?t have to receive the curses, but only the blessings. What a great deal. That is why we are so excited about the Gospel of Jesus Christ, because it is really good news. Galatians 3:14 tells us that we were purchased in order that the blessings would come upon us. This also goes along with what Jesus said in John 10:10b, “…I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly” (KJV). A blessed life, an abundant life, is what Jesus came to give us, and not just in the sweet by and by, but in the here and now, too. It is by faith that we receive the blessings of God, but what about the curses. How is it that they still attack us? First, let?s check out what the curses are: sickness, poverty, and death. We have been purchased and freed from the power of these curses as far as God is concerned. But, there is an adversary, Satan, who still seeks to devour us with these curses. Here is an example of this where Jesus said in Luke 13:16, “Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?" (NIV). Satan bound her with sickness, but Jesus set her free. Acts 10:38 says that Jesus healed all who were under the power of the devil. So, it is Jesus who frees us from the curse, and Satan who tries to keep us cursed. God wants you to have all your needs met, and have extra to give and be a blessing. How do we resist the attacks of Satan? Through faith we receive the promise of freedom through Jesus Christ from the curse. We stand against the devils attacks against us by the Word of God and the Name of Jesus. The Bible also tells us to submit to God, resist the devil and he will flee from you (James 4:7). So, we have to accept what Jesus has bought us and take our stand against the enemy in all these areas. What about the curse of death? Our bodily death is the last vestige of the curse to be swallowed up by the victory of Jesus. We will still die physically until Jesus? second coming. Our separation from God is the death that we immediately are saved from when we receive Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. John 5:24 says it best, “I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life,” (NIV). We have crossed over from death to life. We were dead in our sins, but now we are alive unto God; we have eternal life. So, we are spiritually alive. We are in relationship and fellowship with God. Jesus called it being „born again,? (John 3:3). Receive Jesus into your life today by praying a prayer like this: “Heavenly Father, I believe that Jesus is the Son of God. He died on the cross, was buried, and rose again for my salvation. Come into my heart Lord Jesus. Forgive me of all my sins. I receive you as my Lord and my Savior. I now live for you. I am saved. Thank you, Lord.” Pastor Kevin Humphrey Abundant Life Church River Falls, WI
