Traveling gives plenty of such opportunities and when you choose a hotel to stay in next time, here, in this website, is a list of 5 most weird (怪 异的) hotels in the world. Dog Bark Park Inn If you keep a dog and love animals, then you will definitely become a fan of this hotel. The room of the hotel is just right to accommodate 4 people. Here visitors will find a microwave oven to prepare a simple meal, games, puzzles and books to entertain themselves, an air conditioner and of course a bath. There is no TV set or a phone though. Dennis Sullivan and Frances Conklin, the designers of this hotel, knew what might attract people. Next time you decide to visit Idaho, take a trip to Cottonwood to see the building. Das Park Hotel You are welcomed to spend a night or two in one of the drainpipes (排水管) in Austria. Do not worry, you will love the place a lot because it is equipped and is perfectly adjusted to basic human needs. However, there is one disadvantage to all these. The matter is that bathroom facilities are not included in the price. Each room here is quite small — only 2 sq. meters, but has a bed, electricity and air conditioning. You can also use a special place to keep your luggage. This unusual hotel is situated in Linz. CasAnus Read the name of the hotel attentively and you will easily guess what place exactly you are going to spend your vacation in! The hotel is situated in Kemzeke, Belgium and was designed by Joep van Lieshout. Do not say no to this hotel since it is quite comfortable and nice inside. Hobbit Motel Deep inside we stay kids forever. This is what the creators of the Hobbit Motel kept in mind when they were creating this motel. Read some more of J.R.R. Tolkien or other books of this kind to fully understand and even feel the atmosphere of the place. The Hobbit Motel is located in Woodlyn Park, New Zealand. It invites visitors all year round. You will recognize the inn by its blocks it is made of and the green roof covered with a thick layer of grass. Null Stern Hotel Switzerland is a rich country and could offer hundreds of five-star hotels. However, in Appenzellerland, they have a zero-star hotel. There are no windows in the hotel since it is constructed from a war bunker(地堡). The innovation didn?t go unnoticed and in 2009 Patrik Riklin and Frank Riklin, who created the place, were nominated at the Worldwide Hospitality Awards. This star-free hotel enters the list of the top 100 European hotels and enables its visitors to enter into the spirit of the great past and history. 56(People who choose to live in Das Park Hotel need to pay extra money for ________. A. Internet connectivity B. air conditioning C. electricity D. the shower 57(Which statement about the hotels is TRUE according to the passage? A. The Null Stern Hotel is the only zero-star hotel in Switzerland. B. The Dog Bark Park Inn offers rooms with an area of 4 sq. meters. C. The Hobbit Motel is distinguishable by its blocks and green roof. D. CasAnus only opens in summer since its rooms have no windows. 58. The author writes this passage to________. A. introduce five strange but fantastic hotels B. explain how and why such hotels were built C. tell readers how to choose a hotel when traveling D. stress the popularity of such hotels among travelers B Some of the world?s most significant problems never hit headlines. One example comes from agriculture. Food riots and hunger make news. But the trend lying behind these matters is rarely talked about. This is the decline in the growth in yields(产量) of some of the world?s major crops. A new study by the University of Minnesota and McGill University in Montreal looks at where, and how far, this decline is occurring. The authors take a vast number of data points for the four most important crops: rice, wheat corn and soybeans. They find that on between 24% and 39% of all harvested areas, the improvement in yields that took place before the 1980s slowed down in the 1990s and 2000s. There are two worrying features of the slowdown. One is that it has been particularly sharp in the world?s most populous countries, India and China. Their ability to feed themselves has been an important source of relative stability both within the countries and on world food markets. That self-sufficiency cannot be taken for granted if yields continue to slow down or reverse. Second, yield growth has been lower in wheat and rice than in corn and soya beans. This is problematic because wheat and rice are more important as foods, accounting for around half of all calories consumed. Corn and soybeans are more important as feed grains. The authors note that “we have preferentially focused our crop improvement efforts on feeding animals and cars rather than on crops that feed people and are the basis of food security in much of the world.” The report qualifies the more optimistic findings of another new paper which suggests that the world will not have to dig up a lot more land for farming in order to feed 9 billion people in 2050, as the Food and Agriculture Organization has argued. Instead, it says, thanks to slowing population growth, land currently ploughed up for crops might be able to revert to forest or wilderness. This could happen. The trouble is that the forecast assumes continued improvements in yields, which may not actually happen. 59. What does the author try to draw attention to? A. Food riots and hunger in the world. B. The decline of the grain yield growth. C. News headlines in the leading media. D. The food supply in populous countries. 60. Why does the author mention India and China in particular? A. Their self-sufficiency is vital to the stability of world food markets. B. Their food yields have begun to decrease sharply in recent years. C. Their big populations are causing worldwide concerns. D. Their food self-sufficiency has been taken for granted. 61. What does the Food and Agriculture Organization say about world food production in the coming decades? A. The growing population will greatly increase the pressure on world food supplies. B. The optimistic prediction about food production should be viewed with caution. C. The slowdown of the growth in yields of major food crops will be reversed. D. The world will be able to feed its population without increasing farmland. C Detective Keeling took his client—a good, looking lady into the back yard of the store together. The lady opened a door in the wall and they entered the small room behind the store. They crossed the room to a locked door. Mr. Keeling took some special keys from his pocket. Moments later, one of the keys unlocked the door. The lady went into the store. She said she would hide under the table to keep watch on her husband. Mr. Keeling did not follow her. The detective went quickly to the policeman?s house. Then the two men hurried to the jewellery store. They looked through the window. The policeman was surprised. He spoke to Mr. Keeling, “I don?t understand. You told me, „Robbins took a young woman to a restaurant.? Where is she?” “There she is!” said Mr. Keeling. He pointed through the window. “Do you know the lady with Robbins?” asked the policeman. “That?s his secret friend,” said Mr. Keeling. “No! You?re wrong! That?s Robbins? wife,” said the policeman. “I?ve known her for fifteen years.” “What?” the detective shouted. His face became pale. “Who is under the table in the store?” He started to kick the door of the jewellery store. Mr. Robbins came to the door and opened it. The policeman and the detective ran into the store. “Look under that table!” shouted the detective. “Be quick!” The policeman lifted the cloth and put his arm under the table. He pulled out a black dress, a black veil and a woman?s wig(假发). “Is this young lady your wife?” Mr. Keeling asked the jeweller. He pointed at the woman. “Yes! She is my wife!” said Mr. Robbins angrily. “Why did you kick my door? Why are those clothes under my table?” “Please check all the jewellery in your store, Mr. Robbins,” the policeman said. “Is anything missing?” Some diamond rings and some expensive necklaces were missing. The missing jewellery was worth $800. Later that night, Mr. Keeling was sitting in his office. He was looking through a big book of photographs. They were photographs of criminals. The policeman had brought the book to the detective's office. Suddenly, Mr. Keeling stopped turning the pages. He looked at a picture of a handsome young man with a familiar face. The next morning, Mr. Keeling paid the jeweller $800, then closed his office. 62. At the beginning, the lady was able to go into the jewellery store because ______. A. she went to the back yard and found the way B. she was the owner of the store and had the key C. Mr. Keeling unlocked the back door to the store D. two men helped her together to enter the store 63. It can be inferred from the passage that Mr. Keeling cooperated with his client ______. A. so that he could get some jewellery from the store B. because he thought he was helping the lady C. because he wanted to play a joke on Mr. Robbins D. so that he could get a job as a policeman 64. The missing jewellery worth$800 was in fact taken away by ______. A. a young man B. a young woman C. a detective D. a policeman D What does home really mean? Is it the people around you who make a place familiar and loved, or is it the tie to land that?s been in your family for generations? Anna Quindlen?s new novel investigates both, seen through the eyes of Mimi Miller, who narrates the story of her life — and of the strike to the people and to the land she loves — from her 1960s girlhood to the present day. The book begins with the summer Mimi is 11 and everything around her is about to change in Miller?s Valley. She lives with her parents, her older brothers — rakish Tommy and practical ddie —E and her Aunt Ruth, her mother?s sister, who keeps a terrible secret, and who never leaves the confines of her small house behind Mimi?s. The farm has been in their family for almost 200 years, and Mimi can?t imagine life beyond it. The land has always been wet, it seems to Mimi. There?s always a sump pump(抽污泵) running in Mimi?s house, and when it storms, mud comes right up to the front porch. But then, the government steps in, deciding to flood “6,400 acres of old family farms and small ramshackle(摇 摇欲坠的) homes and turn it into a reservoir by using the dam to divert the river,” transforming corn fields into strip malls, drowning the valley under water, along with a way of life that has been perpetuating itself for generations. They?ll buy up homes and resettle everyone, insisting that new is so much better than old. At first the town stubbornly resists, except for Mimi?s mother, who announces, “Let the water cover the whole damn place.” But Mimi is desperate to stay. She has no idea what else there is to want, or where else she could possibly live or who else she could possibly be other than a girl on a farm with her family. Her father, too, is tied to the land he loves, and Ruth balks at even stepping outside her house. But as the river is allowed in, dampening the ground, loosening ties, it seems to drown people little by little, forcing secrets to float up to the surface and change things in ways you might never expect. Quindlen makes her characters so richly alive, so believable, that it?s impossible not to feel every doubt and dream they harbor, or share every tragedy that befalls them. Mimi?s mother is mysteriously bitter toward Ruth, and closemouthed about why. Eddie grows into an efficient man, more like a “friendly visitor” than a brother, who sees and seizes opportunity, becoming an engineer and building new homes for the displaced, as if the future were like a bright, shiny penny. Tommy, the sibling Mimi adores, gets by working odd jobs, car repair, and later selling drugs and going off to war and prison, a man who just tragically never found his place. But what?s Mimi?s place? “I knew there was a world outside,” she says. “I just had a hard time imagining it.” When she gets highest honors in school, her mother insists, “This is your road to something better than this.” And then to Mimi?s astonishment, she gets a full scholarship to medical school. She doesn?t want to leave, but finally, slowly, she begins to move toward her future, to gather ambition and purpose, and to truly see beyond the confines of her life. If there is a weak link at all, it?s Donald, a childhood friend of Mimi?s who moves away, but hasn?t made more effort to visit more often. Still, the novel is overwhelmingly moving. We experience how the land changes through the “foggy mist of summer” to “the dry-ice mist of winter.” And the floodwaters channel in, “so that on the evening of the third day the people in town thought Miller?s Valley was having its first earthquake.” The ending fast-forwards like a tide, carrying all these lives we?ve come to deeply care for into middle age and beyond, as people marry, birth children, move on and, yes, die. Family bonds are restructured, and secrets are revealed that either wedge people apart or bind them together. But Quindlen also allows her characters mystery — and some of what?s unknown stays unknown, which polishes her story with a kind of haunting grace and truthfulness. 65. Anna Quindlen investigates the meaning of home through the following EXCEPT _______. A. Mimi Miller and her life experiences B. the offence to the people in Miller?s Valley C. different outlooks on leaving the family farm D. the invasion to the land in Miller?s Valley 66. The underlined word “perpetuating” in Paragraph 3 means _______. A. preserving B. existing C. involving D. keeping 67. What does the sentence “Ruth balks at even stepping outside her house.” in Paragraph 4 mean? A. Ruth is unwilling to depart from her house B. Mimi?s Aunt is greatly attached to the family farm C. Mimi?s Aunt has a personality of natural reserve. D. Ruth cannot resist chalking around her house. 68. The characters in Quindlen?s novel are _______. A. full of ambition and purpose B. weakly linked interpersonally C. strikingly lifelike and impressive D. clearly revealed to the public in the end 69. What might Mimi?s future fortune be like? A. She seizes opportunity to become a female engineer. B. She eventually finds her place beyond the confines of her life. C. She is admitted to medical school through a full scholarship. D. She steps into the road to something other than highest honors in school. 70. What could the passage most probably be classified into? A. An anecdote. B. A book review. C. A news report. D. An Argumentative essay. Silk Road Heads for the Hills Famous for facilitating an incredible exchange of culture and goods between the East and the West, the ancient Silk Road is thought to have wandered across long horizontal distances in mountain foothills and the lowlands of the Gobi Desert. But new archaeological evidence hidden in a towering tomb reveals that it also ventured into the high altitudes of Tibet—a previously unknown arm of the trade route. Discovered in 2005 by monks, the 1,800-year-old tomb sits 4.3 kilometers above sea level in the Ngari district of Tibet. When digging began in 2012, the research team examining the site was surprised to find a large number of typical Chinese goods inside. The haul lends itself to the idea that merchants were traveling from China to Tibet along a branch of the Silk Road that had been lost to history. “The findings are astonishing,” says Houyuan Lu, an archaeobotanist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences? Institute of Geology and Geophysics in Beijing. Among other artifacts, archaeologists unearthed delicate pieces of silk with woven Chinese characters wang hou (meaning “king” and “princes”), a mask made of pure gold, and ceramic and bronze vessels. They also were taken aback by what looked like tea buds. The earliest documentation of tea in Tibet dates to the seventh century A.D., but these buds would be 400 to 500 years older. To confirm the identification, Lu and his colleagues analyzed the chemical components of the samples and detected ample amounts of caffeine and theanine(茶氨酸), a type of amino acid abundant in tea. Moreover, the chemical fingerprints of the tea remainders were similar to those of tea found in the tomb of a Chinese emperor of the Han Dynasty dated to 2,100 years ago, and both could be traced to tea varieties grown in Yunnan in southern China. “This strongly suggests that the tea (found in the Tibetan tomb) came from China,” Lu says. The findings were recently published in Scientific Reports. Such early contacts between Tibet and China “point to a high-altitude component of the Silk Road in Tibet that has been largely neglected,” says Martin Jones, an archaeobotanist at the University of Cambridge. The evidence contributes to the emerging picture that the Silk Road—which the Ottoman Empire closed off in the 15th century—was a highly three-dimensional network that not only crossed vast linear distances but also scaled tall mountains. Other studies, too, have documented signs of trade along mountain trails in Asia from around 3000 B.C.—routes now known as the Inner Asia Mountain Corridors. “This suggests that mountains are not barriers,” says Rowan Flad, an archaeologist at Harvard University. “They can be effective channels for the exchange of cultures, ideas and technologies.” Silk Road Heads for the Hills Function of the To promote (71) ? and commercial exchange between the East and ancient Silk Road the West. The first brick layer liked holding a spade instead of working hard. He said that he wanted to be a boss in the future. The second one always liked complaining about the long hours of work and his low salary. The third one kept laying quietly without making any claims. Several years later, the fist layer was still holding his spade in the original place and the second gave the excuse of work injury for early retirement. Only the last one became the boss of the building company.” The contractor continued, “You know, that is also how I got to where I am now. I once worked harder than the others. Soon my day came, and my boss noticed me and promoted me to his assistant.
