Below are four that you can enjoy during your trip to Britain. Cotswolds The Cotswolds are a range of hills measuring about 2,000 square kilometers, designated as an area of outstanding beauty and shared by the counties of Somerset, Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire. Sometimes known as “The Heart of England”, the hills are small but perfectly formed and dotted with pleasant towns and wellpreserved old villages inhabited mainly by well-preserved old English folk. Bath Bath is a historic Roman and Georgian spa city. It is a World Heritage (遗产) Site, situated 100 miles west of London and 15 miles southeast of the nearest big city, Bristol. A unique city, Bath is famous for its hot springs, Roman period baths, medieval heritage and stately Georgian architecture. The famous English writer Jane Austen spent some time there, and her novel is a satire (讽刺) of the social life of the city at the time. Many of the sites she mentioned are still able to be visited in the city today. Much Wenlock The Shropshire town of Much Wenlock is a characteristically English town, off the beaten track, but well worth a visit. Not only is Much Wenlock a stunning beautiful medieval town, but it also played a part in the birth of the modern Olympic Games. Much Wenlock is the birthplace of William Penny Brookes, the inspiration for the modern Olympic Movement and founder of the Wenlock Olympian Society. In recognition of its sporting heritage, the 2012 London Olympic Games named one of their mascots Wenlock. Castle Combe Nestled in a wooded Cotswold valley, with the ambling Bybrook River flowing through its heart, Castle Combe is a truly delightful example of the traditional English village. Architecturally, little has changed since the 15th century. There are no street lights or TV aerials and you enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, and you will understand why it has won the “Prettiest Village in England” award so many times. Castle Combe is also a favoured location for Hollywood film and television companies. 1.In which place can we have a hot bath? A.Castle Combe. B.Cotswolds. C.Bath. But to those who are new to it all, it can be overwhelming and sometimes confusing. October is usually the busiest month in the academic calendar. Universities have something called Freshers' Week for their newcomers. It's a great opportunity to make new friends, join lots of clubs and settle into university life. However, having just left the comfort of home and all your friends behind, the prospect of meeting lots of strangers in big halls can be nerve-wracking. Where do you start? Who should you make friends with? Which clubs should you join? Luckily, there will be thousands of others in the same boat as you worrying about starting their university social life on the right foot. So just take it all in slowly. Don't rush into anything that you'll regret for the next three years. Here are some top tips from past students on how to survive Freshers' Week: —Learn rules. Make sure you are aware of British social etiquette. Have a few wine glasses and snacks handy for your housemates and friends. —Be hospitable. Sometimes cups of tea or even slices of toast can give you a head start in making friends. —Be sociable. The more active you are, the more likely you'll be to meet new people than if you're someone who never leaves his room. —Bring a doorstop. Keep your door open when you're in and that sends positive messages to your neighbors that you're friendly. So with a bit of clever planning and motivation, Freshers' Week can give you a great start to your university life and soon you'll be passing on your wisdom to next year's new freshers. 4.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage? A.the newcomers usually miss the day living at home B.most of the students in the UK spend three years in universities C.many freshers are worried about how to fit in with university life D.all the new students will make new friends and join certain clubs 答案:C 推理判断题。根据文章第四段第一句“Luckily, there will be thousands of others in the same boat as you worrying about starting their university social life on the right foot.” C。 6.Why does the author suggest having wine glasses and snacks handy? The job was at the grocery store where I was made work long hard hours for very little pay. But that little money I earned could provide some supplies with me at school. One day when a person stopped me while I was packing groceries. He said “thank you”, to that I replied “no problem”, and then I was about to going back to work. Therefore, the stranger wouldn't let me off; he looked me straight in the eye, and says in sincerity, “No, really, thank you!” That moment I felt moving by his simple words. He was showing her respect for my service. At that time, I was working part-time for my whole after-school life. The job was at 1.the→a 考查冠词。 2.made后面加to 考查make用法。make sb. do sth.结构用于被动语态时,应转化为be made to do sth.,此时应还原动词不定式符号to。 3.with→for 考查介词。 be about to do sth.“将要/即将做某事”。 7.Therefore→However 考查副词。 10.her→his 考查代词。
