WhyICametoCollege?WhyhaveIchoosetoattendcollege?Isthefour-yearacademiclifeworthwhile?Ihaveputthesequestionstomyselfatmanytimesinthepasttwoyears.Itisimpossibletositintheclassroomlisteningtothelectureswithoutbeingdistractedforamomentbythefatterwalletscarriedbythehigh-schoolgraduateswhohavemadeabigfortune.ItisimpossibletostayupverylatepreparingfortheexaminationswithoutwonderingforamomentwhetherImadeawisechoiceasacollegeman.Afterponderingthesequestionsonmanyoccasions,IhavefinallyreachedtheconclusionthatcollegeeducationissomethingItrulywanttoanditisworthwhile.Admittedly,myparentsdidinfluencemyopinionsaboutcollegeIcanstillhearmyfathersaying,"Gotocollege,myboy."Theywerepersistentbutnotdemandingandrespectedmydecision.AndIdidrealizesomedisadvantagesofcontinuingcollegeeducation,whichwouldcostmetoomuchpersonalhappinessaswellasagreatsumofmoney.ButIattendedcollegeforeveryreasonotherthanfinance.IattendedcollegebecauseIenjoylearningandgainingknowledge.IrememberasIproceededfurtherthroughhighschoolintomyjuniorandsenioryears,IbecamegenuinelyinterestedinChemistry,PhysicsandMaths.IfeltthatIwantedtocontinuetostudytheseareasandthatIwouldnotbecontenttosimplyendmyeducationalcareerwithhighschoolandentertheworkingworldsosoon.ItwasthenthatIbegantorecognizeinmyselfastrongdrivetoobtainknowledge.Theneedtocontinuelearningfeltincreasinglystrongasmyhighschoolcareerwasdrawingtoacloseandthedecisiontoattendcollegeseemedanaturalone.IdidnotchoosetoattendmerelybecauseIfeelcollegeisaplanewhichhelpsonetoseekscientifictruth.Italsohelpsonetobecomeawell-roundedperson.Withcoursesandlecturesconcerningdifferentfieldsofstudyavailable,andthebestbrainsinthecountryonthecampus,itthrowsmeintocontactwitharichvarietyofsocietyandpoliticalideas,helpingtoexpendmyhorizonsandwidenmyoutlooks.Idonotwanttoconcealmymaterialmotive,apartfromacademicandphilosophicalones.Intoday'sworld,acollegeeducationhasbecomealmostessentialifonewishestocompeteinthejobmarket.Inthenextseveralyears,thistrendwillsurelycontinue,withaBachelor'sdegreebecomingalmostindispensableonewishestofindadesirablecareer.IfeltthatattendingcollegewasapracticalandnecessarystepwhichItooktoensureasecurefutureformyself.WhyhaveIchosentoattendcollege?SometimesI'munsureoftheexactreasonmyself.I'msure,however,thedesiretoobtainknowledge pushedmetowardcollege.Forthisreason,Inevermindspendingcountlessbeautifulnightsonpaperworks;Ineverconsidermyselfunhappy,miserableandunfairlyburdened,andIneverthinkcollegeisawasteoftimeandmoney.
