INMETCO 3 History of INMETCO process • 1970s INCO Ltd. in Canada started development to reclaim iron, nickel and chromium from the specialty steel waste by-products. • 1976 The International Metals Reclamation Company Inc. (INMTCO) was formed as 100% subsidiary of INCO Ltd. • 1978 INMETCO started The Ellwood City plant operation including 16.8m dia. RHF. • 1985 DRI production using iron ore was demonstrated and its result was published. It could be achieved metallization rate of DRI up to 90 to 95%. • 1995 Mitsui and Daido became a co-licensee. • 2000 No.1 commercial plant (NSC Kimitsu) started operation. • 2004 SUS waste recycle plant (Taiwan) started operation. INMETCO 5 OUTLINE OF INMETCOTM PROCESS 1) Fine metal oxides and fine carbons are blended and pelletized to green pellets (size: several to ten-odd mm). 2) Feeding into RHF to make uniform layer on the hearth. 3) The close contact of the metal oxide and reductant in the pellet results in an extremely rapid reduction with reaction time from 8 to 15 minutes at temperature of 1,100 to 1,350℃. 4) Metals (such as zinc and lead) and volatiles are evaporated and entrained into the off gas as highly concentrated secondary metal oxide, which can be reclaimed. 5) Reduced pellet discharged with temperature of about 1,000℃ is either directly hot charged into arc furnace to melt for obtaining hot metal, or cooled for storage.
