① anthology 的终极源头是古希腊词 anthologos. anthologos 的意思是 gathering flowers 或者 flower gathering(采花) 。具体地说 ,antho
即 anthos ,flower (花)之义 ;而 logos 即 legein ,to gather (采撷)之义
② florilegium 脱胎于拉丁词 florilegus。florilegus 的意思是 culling flowers (采花) 。其中 flori ,flower (花) 之义 ;而 legus 即 legre , to

Webster’s New
World Dictionary 中 , anthology 的释义为 a collection of poems , stories , songs ,excerpts , etc. , chosen by
the compiler。
借助像样一点的英语词典 ,我们便可以得知 ,flower (花) 一词有 the best or finest part or example (精

The Metaphoric Meaning of Flowers in Chinese and Western Culture
Wang Yun
( Department of Chinese Language and Literature , Fudan University , Shanghai 200433)
Abstract : This is a thesis on comparative culture from the angle of cultural anthropology. First , in light of the
two English words anthology and florilegium , it brings up the issue why the flower is prone to become a
metaphor for essence in Chinese and Western culture. Second , with a lot of material from religious , philosoph2
ical , anthropological , folklore , medical , literary and linguistic works , it demonstrates that in the mind of an2
cient Chinese and Western people , there was a cognition chain : FLOWER = (RED) = BLOOD = LIFE(SOUL)
= ESSENCE. Finally , it points out that any ordinal shift between terms in the above five2term equality basi2
cally accords with“the law of pseudo2identity”essential to prelogic.
Key Words : flower , essence , Chinese and Western culture
