ISitandLookOut------WaltWhitman山西师范大学外国语学院一班史晓娟1114010118Isitandlookoutuponallthesorrowsoftheworld,anduponalloppressionandshame;Isithereandlookoutatallthesorrowsofhumanworld,andlookatalltheoppressionandshameofthisworld.Ihearsecretconvulsivesobsfromyoungmen,atanguishwiththemselves,remorsefulafterdeedsdone;Icanheartherestrainedsadcryingfromyoungpeoplewhentheyareregretfulforallthesorrowsofhavingdonewrong.Isee,inlowlife,themothermisusedbyherchildren,dying,neglected,gaunt,desperate;Icanseethatinthepoorfamilies,themotherhasoftenbeenmistreatedbyherchildren.TheyareneglectedandhelplessIseethewifemisusedbyherhusband--Iseethetreacherousseducerofyoungwomen;Iseethewifewasmistreatedbyherhusband;Iseesomemendeceitfultoseducetheinnocentyoungwomen.Imarktheranklingsofjealousyandunrequitedlove,attemptedtobehid--Iseethesesightsontheearth;Iseethegreatjealousyof(someyoungpeople)andthefruitlessloveofsomeother,thoughtheytriedtokeepthefailureasecret.Iseetheworkingsofbattle,pestilence,tyranny--Iseemartyrsandprisoners;Iseeinthehumanworld,somearefightingagainsttheothers;somearesufferingfromthedeadlydisease;somearecruellyrulingthepeople;somearesacrificingtheirlivesfortheirbelief;somehadcommittedcrimeandhadbeenimprisoned.Iobserveafamineatsea--Iobservethesailorscastinglotswhoshallbekill'd,topreservethelivesoftherest;Iseethatoverthesea,thesailorsinstarvationaredrawinglotstodecidewhichofthemshouldbekilledtoprovidefoodforthesurvivaloftheothers.Iobservetheslightsanddegradationscastbyarrogantpersonsuponlaborers,thepoor,anduponnegroes,andthelike;Iseeveryclearlysomeself-importantpersonsareshowinginsultsandcontempttothelaborers,tothepoor,totheNegroesandtoallthepeoplealike.Allthese--Allthemeannessandagonywithoutend,Isitting,lookoutupon,See,hear,andamsilent.WhenIsithere,Icanseealltheunkindnessandsufferingsinthissociety.However,Icandonothingforachangeofthemexceptjustlookingatthemhappening,hearingthemcryingandstayinginsilence.Istayinself-reproach,butnothingmoreIcando.Ifailinmyresponsibilitytoact.“ISitandLookout”showsthepoet’sattitudestowardspainsandevilsintheworld.Commentonthepoem:Beingasympatheticperson,Whitmanfeltrathersorrowfulforalltheunkindnessexistinginthisworld:themotherbeingmisused,thetreacherousseducerofyoungwomen,jealousy,battles,pestilence,tyranny,prison,slights,degradations,arrogance,andtheastoundingwayofdealingwiththefamineatseaaswell.Hewasshamefulbuthefeltunabletodoawaywiththem.Asapoetwithstrongsocialresponsibility,Whitmanaccomplishedhisdutytoexpose,tocondemn,toappealforareform,however,nothingfurthercouldbedoneexceptthese.AsenseofguiltmadeWhitmansufferbutitcouldbynomeansbeshakenoff.Consequently,astrongimplicationofself-reproachisaddedtothelastline.
