Generell / General
The decisions made by EK1AG2 will be forwarded to EK1 with the recommendation to bring
about an EK1-decision (adoption and publication). This is by statute to ensure that the rec-
ognized test organizations apply equal requirements for the GS-Mark certification (new issue
of certificates, updates do to technical issues)and therefore more legal certainty is assured.
While issuing additional GS-certificates based on existing certificates or due to administrative
changes (change in address, changes of certificate holder etc.) the EK1AG2 decisions do not
apply.
If product modifications require new safety related technical evaluations the EK1AG2-
decisions apply.
The implementation of the EK1AG2 decisions according to EK1-AD06 category C is related
only to the revision changes against the previous document version. For decisions already
made and not changed the date of the first publishing is binding. In case a decision will be
revised/added the original decision is still valid following category C starting with the original
date of publishing.
In case of doubt the German version is valid.

1. Generelle Festlegungen zur Bewertung von Produkten im Geltungsbereich der EN
60335-2-9 / General requirements for the evaluation of Products in the scope of EN
60335-2-9
der äußeren Oberflächen in normaler Gebrauchslage die Prüfsonde A (EN 61032 6.1.2 a) )
verwendet.
EN 60335-2-9 A13 can be used as test requirement and basis for evaluating the risk of
touchable non-functional hot surfaces for granting the GS-mark by taking into account the
following constraints.
Issues which are not covered by the standard shall be covered with the decisions of EK1AG2.
The following requirements apply mutatis mutandis to all products in the scope of EN 60335-
2-9 except specific decisions were made for these products by EK1AG2.
a) Exemptions, e.g. double value of the surface temperature (EN 60335-2-9 A13 table Z101
foot note b)) or other exemptions differ from a “maximum setting” shall not be applicable.
b) As long as no other regulations exist the evaluation if outer surfaces are touchable in nor-
mal use will be done by using probe A (EN 61032 6.1.2 a)).

EK1AG2 catalog for implementation of Guide 29 rev 6 Seite/page 7 von/of 33
lich. Es besteht kein Verbrennungsrisiko.
Abbildung 1).

men.
EK1AG2 catalog for implementation of Guide 29 rev 6 Seite/page 9 von/of 33
bündig abschließen.
3. Betrieb beendet (Toaster ausgeschaltet):
Entnahme Verbrennungsgefahr besteht.
Decision for certi-
fication:
Definition:
Pop-up automatic function
Lift-up manual function
A general risk assessment regarding the metal surface on the top (see
photo) follows:
EK1AG2 catalog for implementation of Guide 29 rev 6 Seite/page 10 von/of 33
In general the following situations can be considered:
1. Toaster in operation (toasting):
The metallic top surface comprises a surfaces adjacent to the inner part
of the appliance which is intentionally heated to provide the desired
function.
By construction this surface is only reachable from the top. Due to hot
air rising by convection from the slots the risk of burning is clearly
known to the user.
Contact with the hot metal surface is therefore not likely. There is no
risk of burning.
2. Immediately after end of operation (removal of the bread):
It can be assumed that by experience the user will expect to touch the
hot surface of the toast when removing the bread by hand (in general
there is no burning hazard due to the rough surface structure, low ther-
mal capacity and low thermal conductivity). Therefore the user will seek
to minimize the contact time and contact area when removing the
bread.
Additionally it can be presumed that the user is aware and alerted of
any hot parts by the warm air rising by convection and that he will con-
sciously try to avoid contact with adjacent hot metal parts.
As long as removal of the toast is possible without having to touch the
metal surface due to construction, there is no relevant risk of uninten-
tional touching at the shown location.
This can be assumed if the bread will protrude from the slot sufficiently
in the upper position of the pop-up mechanism (see Fig. 1).
Even if the toaster is provided with an additional “lift-up” function this
function will not be considered.
A protrusion “a” (Fig. 1) of 20 mm over the highest point of the hot sur-
face can be regarded as sufficient to allow a safe removal of the toast.
This protrusion height has to be assured also in case of an integrated
roll rack. A supplied tool (e.g. pliers) intended for the safe removal of
toast is not suitable as an adequate solution.
A contact with the hot metal surface is not therefore likely. The risk of
burning is minimized.
EK1AG2 catalog for implementation of Guide 29 rev 6 Seite/page 11 von/of 33
For the evaluation a normal toast of about 85 mm length is assumed,
the maximum possible load with toasts apply.
(Note: Hot surface - Any surface that exceeds the values of the table
Z.101 without consideration of footnote b)
The unit is functionally designed that after operating of the automatic
shut-off the distance b does not exceed 60 mm. With respect to the
shrinking of the toast during the toast process an additional tolerance of
5 mm has to be taken into account. The toaster has to be loaded with
the determined maximum possible number of heat-resistant plates to
(edge length 60 mm, thickness 10 mm, weight 30 g). In new condition
and after test of clause 19.101 these plates in worst position have to be
at least close with the top edge.
3. Operation ended (toaster switched off):
After the bread has been removed no further contact within a short pe-
riod of time is expected (preparation and consumption of the toast be-
fore storing the appliance).
Measurements conducted on different appliances of this construction
have shown that the temperature rise for the discussed metallic top
surface due to the minimal thickness of the material decreases within 5
min. already to 45 K (equivalent 70° C) or less.
Contact with the hot metal surface is therefore not likely.
Summary:
For the shown construction at the evaluated surface a minimized haz-
ard of injury by burning for the user is expected which would require the
setting of limits for the temperature rise at this location.
Remark:
In view of foreseeable misuse (toast of small bread slices) the user has
to be informed that taking out is related with a risk of burning.

1.3) Raclette-Grill
EN60335-2-9
Foto:
Photo:
Zertifizierent-
scheidung:
Decision for certi-
fication:
The upper metal frame is considered as adjacent surface not sufficient
minimized. It is likely that this area will be touched during normal use.
Due to the height if the appliance and the position of the metal frame
the user will burn his lower arm.

gonomie einhalten. Das Über- und Vorbeigreifen muss konstruktiv ver-
hindert werden.
Decision for certi-
fication:
The frame (green arrow) is used only for fixing of the hot plates and will
not be considered as a hand grip.
The limits for surface temperatures of hand grips and Raclette pans
shall be observed.
The lower frame (red arrow) has to be considered as a hand grip and
has to meet the relevant requirements regarding to temperature and
ergonomics. Encroachment has to be prevented by construction.
