Reading Comprehension Part A Directions: Read the following four passages. Answer the questions below each text by choosing A, B, C or D. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1. Passage 1 Increasingly, the development of tourism is seen to have an effect on the environment. Erosion is one problem. The steps and stones of major popular sites like Shakespeares birthplace or Stonehenge are literally being worn away by millions of foreign feet. The remedy in the case of Britain' s best known prehistoric monument has been to use railings to keep visitors at a distance. Such measures can hardly be adopted in the house of the Bard, however, where tourists want to enter the actual building. Overcrowding in cities, towns and villages is another problem. Traffic jams are an outcome. In narrow roads, tourist vehicles cause congestion. Local traders and residents cannot get around to do their work. Car parks fill up, so strangers park their cars where they can: in streets, across gate ways, in lay-bys, or even in private driveways. This causes obstruction. The sheer weights of incomers can be a hazard. Thus Venice, a city built for half a million inhabitants, is swollen by another half million who populate the city daily in the tourist season eight million visits each year. The mayor recently decided to limit visitors to 90,000 a day: the only way to save the city from inundation. Pollution is a further consequence. The' Lakes are popular for people who enjoy water-sports, such as water-skiing, power boat racing and swimming, but boats pump sewage directly into the water. Facilities can be provided to prevent this happening, but this is costly. There are also problems with litter. The threat to wildlife habitats is yet another result. Tourists around the Lakes destroy vegetation. This is harmful to animals which build their nests along the shores, Wildlife refuges have been created which have helped protect these natural sites. On the Greek island of Zakinthos, the breeding beaches of the rare loggerhead turtle are being threatened by tourist disturbance. Local conservationists try to monitor and protect the turtles but they have been attacked by the angry owners of taverns and hotels who make lucrative profits from bars or renting sunbeds and umbrellas. Government compensation payments for the loss of business might be the answer, but this would be costly. 41、Which of the following statements best summarizes the main idea of the passage? A. The development of tourism has brought about environmental problems. B. Tourism should not develop at the cost of the environmental destruction. C. Measures taken to protect the environment prove to be ineffective. D. Tourism is developing for the sole purpose of making money. 42、As a result of over-development of tourism, Venice ______. A. is overcrowded with cars B. is overloaded C. is worn away D. is badly polluted 43、Paragraph 3 points out that the Lakes ______. A. have too many boats on them B. are overcrowded on the beaches C. are polluted by wastes D. are no longer attractive 44、On the island of Zakinthos, measures to protect the turtles meet resistance chiefly for ______. A. political reasons B. economic reasons C. environmental reasons D. developmental reasons 45、Overcrowding in cities, towns and villages is another problem caused by over-development of tourism, an outcome of which is ______. A. that strangers park their cars where they can B. that local traders and residents cannot get around to do their work C. that the sheer weights of incomers can be a hazard D. traffic jams Passage 2 The subject of my study is women who are initiating social change in a small region in Texas. The women are Mexican Americans who are, or were, migrant agricultural workers. There is more than one kind of innovation at work in the region, of course, but I have chosen to focus on three related patterns of family behavior. The pattern I life style represents how migrant farm workers of all nationalities lived in the past and how many continue to live. I treat this pattern as a baseline with which to compare the changes represented by pattern ? and ?. Families in pattern I work and travel in extended kin units, with the eldest male occupying the position of authority. Families are large and no children are unusual. And all members are economic contributors in this strategy of family migration. Families in pattern ? manifest some differences in behavior while still maintaining aspects of pattern I. They continue to migrate but on a reduced scale, often modifying their schedules of migration to allow children to finish the school year. Parents in this pattern often find temporary local jobs as checkers to make up for lost farming income. Pattern ? families usually have fewer children than do pattern I families. The greatest amount of change from pattern I, however, is in pattern III families, who no longer migrate at all. Both parents work full time in the area and have an average of three children. Children attend school for the entire year. In pattern ?, the women in particular create new roles for them selves for which no local models exist. They not only work full time but may, in addition, return to school. They also assume a greater responsibility in family decisions than do women in the other pat terns. Although these women are in the minority among residents of the region, they serve as role models for others, causing moderate changes to spread in their communities. Now opportunities have continued to be determined by pre-existing values. When federal jobs became available in the region, most involved working under the direction of female professionals such as teachers or nurses. Such positions were unaccepted to many men in the area because they were not accustomed to being subordinate to women. Women therefore took the jobs, at first, be cause the income was desperately needed. But some of the women decided to stay at their jobs, at first, after the family' s distress was over. These women enjoyed their work, its responsibility, and the companionship of fellow women workers. The steady, relatively high income allowed their families to stop migrating. And, as the benefits to these women became increasingly apparent, they and their families became even more willing to consider changes in their lives that they would not have considered before. 46、Which of the following titles best reflects the main focus of the passage? A. A Survey of Three Mexican American Families at Work in Texas. B. Innovative Career Women: Effects on Family Unity. C. Changes in the Life Styles of Migrant Mexican American Families. D. Farming of Family: The Unavoidable Choice for Migrant Farm Workers. 47、All of the following statements about pattern ? children express differences EXCEPT ______. A. they migrate for part of each year B. they spend less time contributing to family income C. they spend more months on school D. their parents sometimes work at jobs other than farming 48、According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true of women in pattern III families? A. They earn a reliable and comparatively high income. B. They continue to work solely to meet the urgent needs of their family. C. They enjoy the fellowship involved in working with other women. D. They serve as models of behavior for others in the region. 49、The author' s attitude towards the three patterns of behavior mentioned in the passage is best described as one of ______. A. great admiration B. unbiased objectivity C. dissatisfaction D. indifference 50、From the passage we can find out that the author mainly studies ______. A. patterns of family behavior B. women who are initiating social change in a small region in Texas C. migrant agricultural workers D. how migrant farm workers lived in the past Passage 3 By far the most common snake in Britain is the adder. In Scotland, in fact, there are no other snakes at al. The adder is also the only British snake with a poisonous bite. It can be found almost anywhere, but prefers sunny hillsides and rough open country, including high ground. In Ireland there are no snakes at all. Most people regard snake bites as a fatal misfortune, but not all bites are serious, and very few are fatal. Sometimes attempts at emergency treatment turn out to be more dangerous than the bite it self, with amateurs heroically, but mistakenly, trying do-it-yourself surgery and other unnecessary measures. All snakes have small teeth, so it follows that all snakes can bite, but only the bite of the adder present any danger. British snakes are shy animals and are far more frightened of you than you could possibly be of them. The adder will attack only if it feels threatened, as can happen if you take it by surprise and step on it accidentally, or if you try to catch it or pick it up, which it dislikes intense ly. If it hears you coming, it will normally get out of the way as quickly as it can, but adders cannot move very rapidly and may attack before moving if you are very close. The effect of a bite varies considerably. It depends upon several things, one of which is the body-weight of the person bitten. The bigger the person is, the less harmful the bite is likely to be, which is why children suffer far more seriously from snake bites than adults. A healthy person will al so have better resistance against the poison. Very few people actually die from snake bites in Britain, and though these bites can make some people very iii, there are probably just as many cases of bites having little or no effect, as there are of serious illness. 51、Adders are most likely to be found ______. A. in wilder parts of Britain and Ireland B. in Scotland and nowhere else C. on uncultivated land throughout out Britain D. in shady fields in England 52、If you are with someone who is bitten by an adder you should ______. A. try to catch the adder B. make no attempt to treat the bite C. not worry about the victim D. operate as soon as possible 53、We are told that adders are ______. A. normally friendly towards people B. unlikely to bite except in self-defense C. aggressive towards anyone in their territory D. not afraid of human beings 54、If a adder hears you approaching, it will usually ______. A. move out of your path B. take no notice of you at all C. disappear very quickly D. wait until you are close and then attack 55、We are told that in general British people think snakes are ______. A. not very common in Britain B. usually harmless C. more dangerous than they usually are D. unlikely to kill people by their bite Passage 4 Of all things in the world, I most dislike filling up forms. In fact, I have a positive horror of it. Applying for a driving licence, registering for an evening course, booking a holiday abroad--every thing nowadays seems to involve giving information about one' s personal life and habits that has little or nothing to do with the matter in hand. When applying for a job, it may be of some obscure interest to a prospective employer to learn that I collect stamps or had measles as a child, but why should he want to know that my father was a tobacconist who lived in Fulham and died when he was 82? The authorities who require one to fill up forms frequently demand answers to questions that one would hesitate to put to one's intimate friends. The worst of it is that, when faced with such questions, my mind goes blank and I can hardly remember my own date of birth, let alone my nationality. Have I ever suffered from a serious illness? Have I7 What do they mean by ' serious' 7 I had my tonsils out in hospital when I was eight, and my mother always assured me I was ' delicate' , but father contended I was born lazy. Do I suffer from any personal defects? Well, I wear contact lenses and my upper teeth are not my own, but perhaps the word ' defects' applies to my character. Am I supposed to admit that I like gambling, and find it difficult to get up in the morning? Both of which are true. Of all, I think job applications are the worst. ' Education--previous experience--posts held-- give dates... ' Terrified by the awful warning about giving false declarations which appears at the bottom of the form, I struggle to remember what exams I passed and how long I worked for what firms. However hard I try, there always seems to be a year or two for which I cannot satisfactorily ac count and which I am certain, if left blank, will give the impression that I was in prison or engaged in some occupation too dubious to mention. Even when the form is safely posted, there is no relief as I hourly await and order from angry official to explain differences on my form. 56、In the opinion of the writer most forms require one to supply ______. A. irrelevant details B. positive answers C. secret information D. personal problems 57、When filling up forms, the writer frequently finds that he ______. A. can only remember his age and birthplace B. doesn't remember who he is C. has forgotten some essential facts D. is afraid to answer the questions 58、From the information he gives about himself, it seems that the writer ______. A. suffers from a physical deformity B. has had all his teeth removed C. has some trouble with his eyesight D. never gets up in the morning 59、When listing his previous experience the writer discovers there are some ______. A. periods left unaccounted for B. accounts he has left unsettled C. details he would rather conceal D. facts of which he' s ashamed 60、When the writer has finally posted his form, he ______. A. heaves a sigh of relief B. expects it to be ignored C. expects there will be unexpected effects D. awaits the arrival of an official Part B Directions: Read the following passage carefully and then translate the underlined segments into Chinese. Your translation should be written clearly on ANSWER SHEET 2. 61. The most important day I remember in all my life is tile one on which my teacher, Anne Mansfield Sullivan, came to me. I am filled with wonder when I consider the immeasurable contrast between the two lives which it connects. It was the third of March, 1987, three months before I was seven years old. 62. On the afternoon of that eventful day, I stood on the porch, dumb, expectant. I guessed vaguely from my mother' s signs and from the hurrying to and fro in the house that something unusual was about to happen, so I went to the door and waited on the steps. The afternoon sun penetrated the mass of honeysuckle that covered the porch, and fell on my upturned face. My fingers lingered al most unconsciously on the familiar leaves and blossoms which had just come forth to greet the sweet southern spring. I did no! know what the future held of marvel or surprise for me. Anger and bitter ness had preyed upon me continually for weeks and a deep languor had succeeded this passionate struggle. 63. Have you ever been at sea in a dense fog, when it seemed as if a tangible white darkness shut you in, and the great ship, tense and anxious, groped her way toward the shore with plummet and sounding-line, and you waited with beating heart for something to happen'? I was like that ship before my education began, only I was without compass or sounding-line, and had no way of knowing how near the harbor was. "Light ! Give me light ! i' was the wordless cry of my soul, and the light of love shone on me in that very hour. 64. I felt approaching footsteps. I stretched out my hand as I supposed to my mother. Someone took it, and I was caught up and held close in the arms of her who had come to reveal all things to me, and, more than all things else, to love me. The morning after my teacher came she led me into her room and gave me a doll. The little blind children at the Perkins Institution had sent it and Laura Bridgman had dressed it; but l did not know this until afterward. When I had played with it a little while, Miss Sullivan slowly spelled into my hand the word "d -o -l -l". I was at once interested in this finger play and tried to imitate it. When I finally succeeded in making the letters correctly I was flushed with childish pleasure and pride. Running downstairs to my mother I held up my hand and made the letters for doll. 65. I did not know that I was a spelling a word or even that words existed. I was simply making my fingers go in monkey-like imitation. In the days that followed I learned to spell in this uncomprehending way a great many words, among them, pin, hat, cup, and a few verbs like sit, stand and work. But my teacher had been with me several weeks before I understood that everything has the name. 65、 Section ? Listening Comprehension Part A 1、oily liquid [解析] 1-5 Petroleum is a very important mineral. It gives us heat and light. It also gives us power for our cars, planes, and ships. It gives us power for machines of all kinds. How was petroleum created? Scientists believe petroleum was formed from the remains of plants and animals. These plants and animals lived and died millions of years ago. Remains are what is left after a plant or animal has died. What exactly is petroleum? Petroleum is a mineral that is a mixture of hydrocarbons. It is an oily liquid which may be brown, green, or black in color. The word "petroleum" comes from Latin and Greek. It means "rock oil". Crude oil is petroleum that comes directly from deep in the ground. It is then taken to a refinery. A refinery is a kind of factory with equipment in it to refine oil. At a refinery the crude oil is purified and separated into its various parts. From the refined petroleum we obtain important products, such as gasoline, kerosene, fertilizers, detergents, plastics, drugs, and perfumes. These are just a few of the thousands of useful products we get from this valuable mineral - petroleum.2、Latin, Greek 3、crude oil 4、 purified and separated 5、fertilizers, plastics, drugs Part B 6、Because she was very fat and ever gaining weight. Soon after the election of Lincoln in 1860,the Civil War began(这句话意思是:林肯当选总统后不久就爆发了美 国内战。 [听力] 11-13 Stephen A. Douglas was the name of the candidate defeated by Abraham Lincoln in the 1860 presidential race. Nicknamed the "Little Giant", Douglas was short in stature but had a large head and shoulders. It was only two years prior to the 1860 contest that Douglas defeated Lincoln in the Illinois senatorial race. During this campaign, the Lincoln-Douglas debates were popular throughout the whole country. One reason Douglas was defeated in his bid for the presidential was the stand he took on the question of slavery. Southern Democrats, angry over his position, voted almost solidly for Lincoln. Soon after the election of Lincoln in 1860, the Civil War began. Although Douglas had offered his services to the new president, he died from typhoid fever shortly after the beginning of the War. Nicknamed the“Little Giant”,Douglas was short in stature bur had a large head and shoulders(意思是:Douglas个子小,但是头和肩 膀却很大,所以人送外号“小巨人”。 答案A与文章第二段中the Lincoln-Douglas debates were popular throughout the whole country意思不符合, 显然错误。 It was only two years prior to the 1860 contest that Douglas defeated Lincoln in the Illinois senatorial race(即Lincoln-Douglas debates 是早在总统大选两年前就开始了。答案C明显错误,Southern Democrats是angry over his( Douglas’)position,而不是angry over the debate。 Questions 14-16 are based on the following passage. Use of English 21、A [解析] 根据下一个句子分析便可知是心脏病,故应选A。 24、C [解析] 通过前文可以知道出现了大脑损伤,以及妻子的death,还有句子did not want to go through himself可以推断出当时Mr(Winter的感受一定是痛苦的,所以答案自然是painful。 After she died(。(to save him((( but instead to let him die这句,便可以推断出此处应该用否定形式。 28、B [解析] 从句子(((heart attack which he so treated, and was rushed to St Francis hospital in Cincinnati可以推断出Mr. 30、D [解析] 联系上文...not to save him和to let him die naturally,便可以判断答案是D revive,意思是“复活,苏醒”。 Section ? Reading Comprehension Part A Passage 1 41、A D 45、 [解析] 此题考查的是对文章第二自然段主题句“Overcrowding in cities, towns and villages is another problem(Traffic jams are an outcome(”的理解,很明显答案是D。 她们不再过迁移的生活,而是有固定的工作,孩子们全年上学,她们也积极开辟生活和就业机会(create new roles for themselves for which no local models exist),加强学业自修,等等。 50、B [解析] 此题考查的是对文章第一自然段的中心句“The subject of my study is women who are initiating social change in a small region in Texas(”的理解。既然作者的研究主题是women who are initiating social change in a small region in Texas,答案自然选B。 It can be found almost any where, but prefers sunny hillsides and rough open country, including high ground。 52、B [解析l 文章第二段指出:(((but not all bites are serious, and very few are fatal(Some times attempts at emergency treatment turn out to be more dangerous than the bite itself, with amateurs heroically, but mistakenly, trying do-it-yourself surgery and other unnecessary measures(意思是:并不是所有被蛇咬伤的人都会有生命危险,只有少数蛇伤是能致命的。 British snakes are shy animals and are far more frightened of you than you could possibly be of them(The adder will attack only if it feels threatened,as can happen if you take it by surprise and step on it accidentally,or if you try to catch it or pick it up,which it dislikes intensely(意 思是:英国的蛇是比较害羞的动物,它们对人类的恐惧远远超过人类对它们的恐惧。 If it hears you coming,it will normally get out of the way as quickly as it can,but adders cannot move very rapidly and may attack before moving if you are very close(意思是:当蝮蛇听到人类走近它的时候,它会很快 地让开路,但是由于它们不能爬得特别快,所以万一它觉得自己离对方很近的时候就会在爬走之前先 发起进攻。 A,move out of your path意思相当于get out of the way。 Passage 4 56、A [解析] 文章第一段指出:everything nowadays seems to involve giving information about one’s personal life and habits that has little or nothing to do with the matter in hand(意思是:似乎每一件事情都会涉及与其关系不大甚至是没有任何关系的个 人信息,这些信息都应该属于不相关的细节问题,也就是irrelevant details,所以答案选A。 The authorities who require one to fill up forms frequently demand answers to questions that one would hesitate to put to one's intimate friends(The worst of it is that, when faced with such questions,my mind goes blank and l can hardly remember my own date of birth, let alone my nationality. 文章指出作者戴隐形眼镜,即 wear contact lenses,这就说 明他视力不是很好;紧接着说my upper teeth are not my own,说明他只有removed his upper teeth而不是remove all his teeth,所以B选项不正确;这一段文字的最后部分说他find it difficult to get up in the morning而不是never gets up in the morning,更没 有身体缺陷(physical deformity),所以答案A和D也都不正确。 However hard I try, there always seems to be a year or two for which I cannot satisfactorily account and which I am certain,if left blank, will give the impression that I was in prison or engaged in some occupation too dubious to mention(大意是:无论作者怎么努力,在填写表格中的先前经历一栏时,往 往会出现某一时期是他无法做出令人满意的解释的,但是他清楚如果某一时期的工作经历没有具体注 明,则可能被怀疑那段时间是在坐牢或者是在从事某种不为人知的活动。 Even when the form is safely posted, there is no relief as I hour ly await and order from angry official to explain differences on my form(意思是:即使是作者填完表格后将其安全寄出,他也不会有如释重负的感觉,时刻准备着收 到表格的对方会来质问他关于表格上的一些出入,并让他予以解释。 通篇文章都体现了文 章开篇的那句话:of all things in the world,I most dislike filling up forms; In fact,I have a positive horror of it( Part B 61、在我的记忆中,我一生最重要的日子是我的老师安尼? Section ? Writing 66、Changing Criteria for Good College Students Probably five or more years ago, good college students simply meant students good at academic work. On being admitted into a college or university, students usually worked very hard just to be top students. They spent most of their campus time in classrooms, reading-rooms or laboratories. They thought about nothing but their studies. Their motivation was very strong and simple: single-minded concentration remarkable. But the criteria for good college students are changing now. It is true that good marks continue to be some students' dream, yet there is a growing number of students who are concerned much more about things other than academic achievement. They are trying to achieve versatility in such areas as art, music, and sports, They also want eagerly to be involved in activities like speech con tests, argumentation on current hot social problems. Moreover, some students have become business men or businesswomen by running a company or serving in an enterprise. In short, with these abilities they want to live better in a competitive society after graduation. The changes that have taken place are, generally speaking, changes for the better. Times are different, and job market demands personnel with both intelligent and non-intelligent qualities such as creativity, observation, reasoning, as well as the ability of applying theory to practice. Therefore, students today should be better prepared for challenges and competition upon graduatior.
