It is the idea of a man named Michael Reynolds. Many Earthships are more or less self-sufficient because they provide their own heat, air and water. They often have gardens watered and fed by wastewater. They are comfortable and ecologically friendly. The main material used in building Earthships is tires. Tires are plentiful and can't be recycled like paper, plastic, and metal. While building supplies for most houses can be very expensive, old used tires are free. First, the tires are packed tightly with dirt. Each full tire weighs as much as 400 pounds. The tires are then stacked like bricks. The walls are extremely strong. They also help keep an even temperature in the house (between 60 and 70 degrees) without heating and cooling systems. The walls inside the Earthship are made of aluminum cans that are held together by cement. Then they are coated with adobe or stucco. The roofs of Earthships are sloped so that rain and snow run into large tanks. These tanks hold all the water for the house, and pumps push the water through the pipes. Sometimes, water flows in certain areas of the house as waterfalls!Water that has been used is pumped out into the gardens where owners grow much of their own food. In most of these houses, the southern side has huge windows that take in winter sunlight as a source of heat. Summer sun does not come in through the south windows, so it doesn't get too hot in the summer. The house also has solar panels that gather energy for lights and hot water and cooking. The Earthships have all the comforts of a regular house without the high cost of electric bills! In a time when we are running out of energy resources, pollution is bad, and waste is piling up, Earthships are the best places to live in. For people who truly care about the environment, Earthships provide a great alternative to traditional houses. You won't be giving up any comforts, and the styles are attractive. We all hope that more and more people will build Earthships and take a huge step toward helping the environment and saving our planet. 46. What is the main idea of this passage?     A. Earthships are a good way to live and protect the environment.     B. Tanks hold water collected from rain and snow.     C. It's important to grow your own food in a vegetable garden.     D. People who live in Earthships usually live in the desert. 47. What does the underlined word “They” in Paragraph 2 refer to?     A. Earthships.          B. Tires.               C. Bricks.          D. Walls. 48. Which sentence states an opinion?     A. Earthships are made out of tires and cans.     B. Tanks collect water for use in Earthships.     C. Earthships can help save our planet.     D. Tires can't be recycled but bottles and paper can. 49. Which evidence best supports the idea that Earthships are environmentally friendly?     A. They were invented by Michael Reynolds.     B. Water that has been used is pumped out into the garden.     C. Summer sun does not come in through the south windows.     D. This saying is becoming a reality. 50. Which statement is an example of propaganda (宣传)?     A. The house also has solar panels that gather energy for lights and hot water.     B. Earthships provide a great advantage over traditional houses.     C. The walls are then coated with adobe or stucco.     D. The construction of houses made of recycled materials has been growing. B) 非选择题:阅读下列材料,然后按要求完成所给出的题目。(答案写在答题纸上) A Questions 51—54: Compare the two travel packages by completing the chart below. B Californians remember the devastating earthquake that struck 100 years ago. (55) At 5:12 Tuesday morning, sirens sounded through the city of San Francisco. Residents were marking the moment a century ago when a powerful earthquake shook the city. On April 18, 1906, the“Great Quake” killed between 3,000 and 7,000 people, destroyed some 28,000 buildings and sparked fires that burned for three days. Nearly half of the city's residents were left homeless. Thousands of people came out to observe the 100-year anniversary of the quake. The spectators included 11 people who survived the quake. Those people are more than 100 years old! One resident marked the anniversary in an unusual way. At the Exploratorium science museum in San Francisco, an artist sculpted a trembling San Francisco neighbourhood out of Jell-O. One Hundred Years Ago Today (56) When the quake struck 100 years ago, most of the city's 400,000 residents were still sleeping, so many residents were reportedly shaken from their beds. Buildings were flattened and gas and water pipes were cracked. In the days following the quake, fires spread throughout the city as residents scrambled through the rubble to find safety. Scientists say the quake would measure a magnitude of 7.8 on today's Richter scale. The quake was so strong that its force was felt throughout the San Francisco Bay area. The quake's epicentre was near San Francisco, but the earthquake was felt from southern Oregon to south of Los Angeles and inland as far as central Nevada. Could It Happen Again? Experts say San Francisco is far more prepared for an earthquake today than it was 100 years ago, but only buildings built after 1970 are considered to be safe in an earthquake. A new study examines how another huge earthquake would affect the city. The study is being discussed this week at a three-day earthquake conference in San Francisco. The 1906 quake is considered one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history. Questions 55—56: Translate the underlined sentences in the passage into Chinese. Questions 57—59: Answer the following questions according to the passage above. 57. How many photocopiers are on this floor? 61. If you walk from Circulation Check-in to General Information Services, in which direction will you be walking? D If the World Tourism Organization's forecasts are on target, international tourist arrivals will climb from the present 625 million a year to 1.6 billion in 2020. Electronic technology is facilitating this growth by offering access to fare and hotel information and online reservation services. Despite a modest annual growth rate (3.1%), Europe will remain, by far, the most popular destination (it can expect 717 million international arrivals in 2020, double the 1998 figure), though its market share will decline from 59% to 45%. Growth on the continent will be led by Central and Eastern European countries, where arrivals are expected to increase by 4.8% per year. At the same time, almost half the world's tourists will be coming from Europe. With a 7% per annum growth in international arrivals, the East Asia / Pacific region will overtake the Americas as the second most popular destination, holding a 27% market share in 2020 against 18% by the Americas. But the industry will also be doing its utmost to court the Asian  traveller, since East Asia / Pacific is forecast to become the world's second most important generator of tourists, with a 7% annual growth rate, pushing (64)________________________. China is expected to become the fourth largest source of tourists on the world market, while it is not even among the first twenty today. While France has held its place as the top destination throughout the 1990s, it will be dethroned (removed from a position of power) in the next decades, with China (excluding Hong Kong) expected to top the list by 2020, even though it is not even featured on it today. Also making an entry into the top ten will be the Russian Federation, Hong Kong, and the Czech Republic. Questions 62—65: Answer the following questions according to the passage and the four bar graphs above. 62. VII. 写作(Writing) A) One possible version: This is a classic chain letter. The idea that everyone who participates in a chain letter will make money is mathematically impossible. This chain letter asks you to send the letter on to 100 people. If everyone who received a letter sent it on to 100 people, by the fifth mailing, ten billion people would receive the letter. That's more than the population of the world! The very first investors in the chain might receive money, but later investors rarely get back their original investment. B) The first possible version: In the 21st century, advances in technology such as the Internet, satellite and cable TV, and cell phones now allow the public to get news 24 hours a day on demand, or whenever they want it. The Internet offers summaries of the news almost every time people go on-line. There are also many websites that make it easy to follow news events from the beginning to the end. All you have to do is type what interests you, and the story you want comes on the screen, along with links to related stories. Some people connect the radio station websites via the Internet, where they can listen to 24-hour news radio or hear discussions about the news on talk radio. In order to compete with the Internet, some newspapers are changing the way they deliver the news. Yet most people question the truth of the news. It will be interesting to see which type of source—high tech or traditional—wins the competition in the future. The second possible version: In the 21st century, people don't have to wait for a newspaper delivery or a TV news programme. By using technology, they can get the news any time of the day or night. However, most people used to read the morning newspapers and turn on radios or TVs in order to follow every single piece of news about this world. For a long time, people got their news the same way—they watch television, listen to the radio, or read the newspaper. In order to compete with the Internet, some newspapers and TV stations are changing the way they deliver the news. Instead of reporting the news objectively, basing their stories on facts, they try to keep their readers' and viewers' interest by focusing on the most upsetting or shocking details of a story. Different people have different tastes. They need a variety of news sources—high tech or traditional—to choose from.   一、 原则: 1. 本题总分为: 30分。A) 10分; B) 20分。 Part I. My piano lesson finishes at 7:00.     M: That's OK.     Q: When will Kathy go to the party? 12. M: Did you have a lot of friends when you were young?     W: I didn't really make any close friends then because I liked going off by myself in the morning during school holidays on my bike with a few books and a lunch in the basket, to find a quiet place to read.     Q: What did the woman like doing when she was young? 13. M: Which tie shall I wear for the interview? Do you think my blue silk one would look all right?     W: That's a bit boring! I'd wear something with a small pattern—squares or spots, something like that.     M: Oh, I don't know. I think I'll wear the plain one.     Q: Which tie will the man wear? 14. M: Have you decided where you are going to live when you get married?     W: I would like to live in the city near my work, but my husband would like a house in the suburbs to save on expenses.     Q: Why does the woman want to live in the city? 15. I was...     M: You know I need it for tomorrow and I asked you to stop working on everything else until you have finished it.     W: I know. I've been working on it all day, but I haven't finished it yet. I'm sorry.      Q: Why is the man angry? B) Listen to the following dialogue. According to the dialogue choose the best answer to each given question. The dialogue will be read twice.      M: I'd like to welcome someone special to our programme this evening to tell us about chimpanzees. We've discovered a lot about chimpanzees over the last 30 years, and this is mostly because of  the work of one person, Jane Goodall. Good evening, Jane.      W: Good evening, Steve, and thank you for inviting me to your show.      M: When did you first become interested in chimpanzees, Jane?      W: I began studying their behaviour in 1960, when I was only 26. I'd always wanted to work with animals, although I didn't have any special training or knowledge.      M: Where did you go to study their way of life?      W: I went to Tanzania in East Africa and worked in the Gombe Stream Chimpanzee Reserve. It's now called Gombe National Park.      M: Did the chimpanzees accept you immediately?      W: No, it took a long time. I used to spend all day with them, observing them and learning about their way of life. I found them fascinating and wanted to know as much as I could about them. However, they wouldn't let me get too close to them. It was only after 18 months of waiting that the chimpanzees finally decided I wasn't going to hurt them. They let me get close to them and accepted me as a part of the forest.      M: And now, more than 40 years later, you're still studying the chimpanzees in Tanzania?      W: Yes, I believe it's the longest continual study of any animal in the wild ever conducted.      M: I understand you've also set up centres in other African countries to look after chimpanzees which have been mistreated by people.      W: Yes, that's right. These centres take care of the many baby chimpanzees whose parents have been killed by hunters. They give these little orphans the chance to live in peace and safety. Part IV. Passages Passage A Listen to the following material and choose the best answer to each question. The passage will be read twice. Woman: First of all, Lambly School has contacted us to tell us all about the concert they are giving on Saturday evening; that's the 8th. The music starts at 7:30 not at 7:00 o'clock as advertised, and will finish at about 8:30 after which coffee will be available. They say it's an evening of songs and dances for everyone. There'll be some food and drinks afterwards in the library. That will be included in the cost of the ticket. Do go along to this concert as the school will use the ticket money to buy new sports equipment for the children. Last year's concert was a great success and the school was able to buy a new computer for the children to use and also pay for a trip to London. Next, I have some details of a regular weekend activity. The Walking Club are going for a long distance walk around the lake this Sunday. Everybody is should meet at 10:00 am in the car park by the lake. Don't forget you can get a bus from the market square if you don't have any transport. On Saturday evening, there's a talk for the International Club by a well-known local writer, Sarah Jones, who teaches at the university. You may have read her latest novel, which is being sold in all the bookshops at the moment. Well, she's giving a talk at 8:00 pm on Saturday evening in the library. That's the building next to the theatre, in the centre of town. I'm sure you'll find it very interesting. Sarah has just returned from Africa and will talk about all her experiences there. She travelled through three different countries and met lots of interesting people, including a famous actor. Now, the International Club would like to remind you that the talk is for everyone, not just members. Passage B Listen to the following material and fill in the missing information in the numbered spaces. The material will be read twice. Man: Welcome to the Sunnington Sports Camp. Before you divide into groups, I'd like to give you some information about the plans for this week. During your time here you will play at least 12 different sports. In the morning there is a planned programme, but we offer you a choice of afternoon activity. You need to sign a list before midday today, saying which sports you'd like to do. The list is on the wall outside the changing room. Now, clothes. You can wear your track suit for most sports, although you should also remember to bring shorts and a T-shirt each day as well, in case it's hot. We do both outdoor sports and indoor activities, so please make sure you have two pairs of sports shoes with you, too. Lunch is served in the canteen at half-hour intervals between 12:15 and a quarter to two. Your group leader will tell you what time to start queuing outside the canteen. We also have a snack bar, where you can buy drinks, chocolate and biscuits, but a word of warning: Don't eat too much at a time, or you won't be able to run as fast! At the end of the course, you will get a certificate, at one of six levels. We give you marks each day for a number of things. First, we look at your attitude: this includes things like effort, working as part of a team, and so on. Then we give you marks for your performance—your strength and speed, as well as your actual skill in each sport. All these marks go towards your final score, which is out of 200. The Level Six certificate goes to anyone who gets 180 marks or more. Now, any questions?
