Jim Carrey: More than a Funny When we mentioned Jim Carrey, two titles come to our mind at the very moment: “The king of comedy” and “The k ing of box office”. Throughout his acting career, Jim Carrey hasperformed inmany famous comedies like The Mask and Dumb and Dumber, and nearly every filmstarring him was at the top of the box office. To be more detailed, his star persona as a fanny is closely connected with the following key words: exaggerated facial expressions, funny body movements, changeful ways of speaking, and garish clothes. Jim Carrey’s abundant and exaggerated facial e xpression plays a crucial role in his success as a comedian. Frowning, opening eyes and month widely, sticking out his tongue, and making face… These are all ordinary thing that nearly everyone has done, but no one can make the audience laugh as wildly with the as Jim Carrey has done. That’s because his has an amazing control of his muscles and can exaggerate these expressions and change between them freely. Also, his rich body language helps him create comic effect and shaperole’s images. This can be best reflected in his way of walking. In the film Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, he always walks with a wiggle; and in Bruce Almighty, after he proves that he gets the power of God, stepping out the cafe, he walks proudly and seems to be ready for a dance at any time. His genius in dancing also favouring his performance. His dances in The Mask are especially infectious. Tina is captivated by his charm after a dance with him, and even those policemen cannot help dancing together with him. Even when he was not dancing, his talent for this is shown. He always moves in a rhythmical way. And when his movement is combined with well-designed music, humour is created. The best example for this is the scene in Bruce Almighty mentioned above. His way of talking is changeful, too, which can not only make his films more interesting, but also help him portray characters better. The most unbelievable thing is that not only his speed and volume of speaking is changing, his tones canalso be adjusted in order to create different characters. On one webpage of Jim Carrey’s official site, photos of many characters played by him was shown, and their classic lines can be heard when these photos are clicked. People may be surprised by how different these voices sound (Jim Carrey –Official Site). Jim Carrey’s make-ups and costumes are also distinctive. Hiscostumesareusually tailored and matched in a strange way, and the colours of them are very bright and of high contrast. His haircuts are alsospecially designed. For example, in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Ace Ventura’s haircut make a huge impact on audience. Some other adornments like strange hats (Dumb & Dumber) and sunglasses (Fun with Dick and Jane) are also used. In brief, his appearances in films provide strong visual impact, and makeroles he plays look amusing. In his early acting career, relying on these features, he played many extremely funny roles who are usually optimistic and cheerful young man favoured by Lucky Goddess. However, since 1990s, while still starring in many comedies, he keeps challenging himself, and plays some more serious role like Truman Burbank in The Truman Show and Joel Barish in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. In these films, he dropped his exaggerated performances, proving that he can also express subtle emotions well. In Man on the Moon, a biographical picture in memory of Andy Kaufman, a great comedian in the 1970s in the USA, Jim Carrey shows off both his talents as a comedian and his ability to portray serious characters. He created many funny and comical characters who have much in common with some other characters he has played in earlier films, on different stages and Andy Kaufman, who is a very common man despite of his crazy pursuit of unique humour off those stages. When he is acting as those funny characters, his old skills are applied to an extreme. His facial expressions are still changeful. This is best exemplified when Andy Kaufman plays Latka on a situation comedy. Several shorts scenes of this situation comedy are cut together in the film. And in this clip shorter than one minutes, Jim Carrey presents audience more than ten greatly differentiated facial expressions of different emotions in an exaggerated and funny way. Exaggerated body movements also appear in this film. When Tony Clifton (played by Andy Kaufman in this scene) is removed from the studio lot, he clashed with staff of this studio. He smashes the chair on the wall, waves his hands crazily, stamped his feet wildly, and struggles when under the control of two securities. The rude image of Tony Clifton is created with such body movements. Jim Carrey also presents audience a wonderful dance when he imitates Elvis Presley in this film. The sway of his hands, the shake of his legs, with the rock music, strongly influence his audience. His control over his voice is best displayed in this film. In the beginning of the film, he speaks in a high thin voice with a strange accents. And later, when he is imitating Elvis Presley, his voice becomes manly and magnetic. Then, on a university campus, he claims himself to be a British, and read The Great Gatsby with a beautiful British accent. And when he plays the role of Tony Clifton, he speaks in another manner. But all of these are not the real tone and accent of Andy Kaufman. Those changes bring enough laughter to audience both within and outside the screen. And apart from all of these funny moments, Jim Carrey expresses subtle emotions of Andy Kaufman well. For example, when he tells his friends Lynne, Zmuda and Shapiro that he has been diagnosed with a rare form of lung cancer and may die soon, his voice is not cheerful as usual, and the shining light in his eyes disappears. He hesitated in his speaking, showing his pain in his heart and his effort to put this out in an acceptable way. His touches his face with his hands, which has never appear in this film before. All of these details lead audience to the inner world of Andy Kaufman. Jim Carrey’s highly energetic slapstick performances is considered to be superficial and immature by some people. However, it can never be denied that he inherit the valuable performing tradition that dates back to the silent era and he is definitely a successful and outstanding comedian (Svetkey). On the other hand, with his extraordinary performance in movies like The Truman Show, he has proved that he can do more than a funnier. Work Cited Carrey, Jim, perf. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Dir.
