Leadership and management__ Seven Habits of Highly Effective People By: Stephen R. Covey The Seven Habits model is not only applicable to our personal life, our social life and our working life, but also highly applicable for leaders and managers. According to Covey, our paradigms affect how we interact with others, which in turn affects how they interact with us. Therefore Covey argues that any effective self-help program must begin with an "inside-out" approach, rather than looking towards our problems as "being out there" (an outside-in approach). We must start with examining our own character, paradigms, and motives Private Victory The first 3 habits—“be proactive, begin with end in mind and put first things first” are what Covey calls the “Private Victory”. These three habits will bring you to independence; they are about you, about reaching a state of independence. In short the three habits are: You have to do it, imagine what you want and Do it! 1. This is the ability to control one's environment, rather than the opposite, as is so often the case. Managers need to control their own environment by using self-determination and the ability to respond to various circumstances (1) Choosing a response Our daily lives are filled with stimuli such as other people, e-mail, and blog. Luckily we are able to filter out a lot of these stimuli, we could not function properly if we couldn’t (the inability to filter stimuli is one of the characteristics of autism and pervasive development disorders). But filtering out stimuli is not enough. A stimulus happens and we respond in a split second. It happens to us all day. However we have the ability to choose a response when we create a gap between a stimulus and a response. According to Stephen Covey we can do this because of: 1 self awareness 2 independent will 3 creative imagination 4 conscience Not doing this makes us a function of our environment, as the stimuli from the environment would be the single defining factor for our behavior. That doesn’t sound very appealing now does it? (2) Proactive language One of the ways you can recognize proactive or reactive attitudes is language. You can recognize reactive language by the fact that the origin of action is outside the person. Pro-active language is the opposite, you take control of the action. Reactive: Something should be done about it. Pro-active: I’m going to solve this issue. Reactive: I’ll try to do better. Pro-active: I’ll do better. Reactive: If only I had enough money, I would re-do my bathroom. Proactive: I want to re-do the bathroom, now how can I get the money for it? Words and language are very powerful. It works both ways, you recognize the attitude by the language, but you can change your attitude by the language as well! Start talking pro-active and you will set your mind to taking action. Just like that. 2. Begin with the end in mind Begin with the end in mind以终为始: This means that the manager must be able to see the desired outcome and to concentrate on activities which help to achieve that end管理人员必须能够预见期望的结果,然后再集中精力于那些帮助实现结果的要务上。 Habit 1 was about understanding that YOU are in control. Habit 2 is the goal-setting habit设定目标的习惯. “Begin with the end in mind” is the habit where you get to dream up all the good stuff. This habit is based on the fact that everything is created twice. The first creation is in the mind, the second creation is in the real world. This is always true! The trick is to think about what your goals are consciously (habit 1: take control, be proactive)! 3. Put first things first要事第一 A manager must manage his own person, personally! And managers should implement activities which aim to achieve the second habit. Covey says that habit 2 is the first or mental creation心智创造; Habit 3 is the second or physical creation Habit 1—“be proactive” said that you are in charge, with habit 2—“begin with end in mind” is the first creation in the mind. Habit 3—“put first things first” is the second creation, in reality. These first 3 habits are what Covey calls the “Private Victory”. These three habits will bring you to independence; they are about you, about reaching a state of independence. In short the three habits are: (1) You have to do it (2) Imagine what you want (3) Do it! The next three habits are part of the Public Victory, which brings you from independence to interdependence. The Private Victory alone brings forth individual producers; the Public Victory creates leaders and team players.
