背离 It takes an enormous amount of courage to make a departure from the tradition. 汤姆过去Tom used to be very shy,but this time he was bold enough to give a performance in front of a large audience. 很多教育家。Many educators think it desirable to foster the creative spirit in the child at an early age. 假设那幅Assuming this painting really is a masterpiece,do you think it’s worthwhile to buy it? 如果这些数据If the data is statistically valid,it will throw light on the problem we are investigating. UNIT2 该公司否认The company denied that its donations had a commercial purpose. 每当他生气Whenever he was angry ,he would begin to stammer slightly. 教育Education is the most cherished tradition in our family. That’s why my parents never took me to dinner at expensive restaurants, but sent me to the best private school. 手术康复Shortly after he recovered from the surgery,he lost his job and thus had to go through another difficult phase of his life. 与我们的富裕In contrast to our affluent neighbors,my parents are rather poor ,but they have always tried to meet our minimal needs. 科学家Have scientist found proof of water on Mars? 委员会The planning committee has narrowed down the possible locations for the nuclear power plant to two coastal towns. 山姆不仅Sam not only lost his job but also both legs;he had to live on welfare for the rest of his life. 由十二人A jury consisting of 12 members voted in unison that Mary was guilty. 听到有人Sean felt humiliated to hear his talent being questioned. 研究明Research shows that laughter can bring a lot of health benefits. 互联网A show Internet connection speed is really annoying. 法律As the law stands ,helping someone commit suicide is a crime. 玛丽在她In her report ,Mary tries to interpret the data from a completely different angle. 苏是一个Sue is a girl of great talent. Her amazing memory sets her apart from her classmates. 是工人和主管It is the creativity and dedication of the workers and executives that turned the company into a profitable business. 食品和医药 The prices of food and medicine have soared in the past three months. 我们打算We plan to repaint the upper floors of he office building. 他的成功His success shows that popularity and artistic merit sometimes coincide. 我不愿意 I don’t want to see my beloved grandmother lying in a hospital bed and groaning painfully. 他这人话He is a man of few words, but when it comes to playing a computer games, he is far too clever for his classmates. 无知的孩子Children who don’t know any better may think these animals are pretty cute and start playing with them. 没有办法There is no way to obtain a loan, so to buy the new equipment, I will just have to grit my teeth and sell my hybrid car. 如果猎人The hunter would not have fired the shots if he hadn’t seen a herd of elephants coming towards his campsite. 我觉得I find it ironic that Tom has a selective memory --- he does not seem to remember painful experiences in the past, particularly those of his own doing. The runway felt different this time. It startled him for a brief moment. Then it all hit him like a wet bale of hay. The bar was set at nine inches higher than his personal best. That's only one inch off the National record, he thought. The intensity of the moment filled his mind with anxiety. He began shaking the tension. It wasn't working. He became more tense. Why was this happening to him now, he thought. He began to get nervous. Afraid would be a more accurate description. What was he going to do? He had never experienced these feelings. Then out of nowhere, and from the deepest depths of his soul, he pictured his mother. Why now? What was his mother doing in his thoughts at a time like this? It was simple. His mother always used to tell him when you felt tense, anxious or even scared, take deep breaths. Why are we so quick to limit ourselves? I’m not denying that most little girls love dolls and most little boys love videogames, and it may be true that some people favor side of their brain, and others the left. But how relevant is that to me, or to anyone, as an individual? Instead of translating our differences into hard and fast conclusions about the human brain, why can’t we focus instead on how incredibly flexible we are? Instead of using what we know as a reason why women can’t learn physics, maybe we should consider the possibility that our brains are more powerful than we imagine. .Is there a contrast between learning styles in China and the West? While we should be careful to avoid exaggerating the differences, they do appear to exist. In China, for example, greater priority is given to developing skills at an early age. The Americans, on the other hand, place more emphasis on promoting creativity in young children, leaving them to pick up skills later. American parents tend to avoid rushing in to assist their children as they try to accomplish a task, thinking in better that children should learn to solve problems by themselves. Such an approach can, on occasion, be mistaken for neglecting one’s parental duties by those more used to “teaching by holding the hand.” Both approaches have their disadvantages as well as advantages, and it may well be worthwhile to search for a superior method that would combine the best of both worlds. If you visited Karl Green, you might not at first sight think he was well-off/affluent. Most of what he owns is rather dated and he will readily admit to falling into the bottom income bracket. Yet he would deny that he is poor, for he feels that his life is full of less tangible riches. Rather than devoting himself to the pursuit of money before all else, he cherishes the pleasures of friendship. His lack of interest in possessions does, however, sometimes make him feel out of place in today's materialistic society and he still clearly feels hurt when he remembers the abrupt departure of a girlfriend who did not share his views. Yet there are many who admire him, particularly for his focus on helping the poor through collecting donations each Christmas. Our dad is typical of the older generation. You can certainly say he gives our welfare his constant attention. Sometimes, however, we wish he wouldn't try quite so hard. To be frank, he seems to have a talent for embarrassing us by making dumb remarks. He should know better than that, but he never seems to learn and just goes on making the same old mistakes repeatedly. The result is that we live in constant dread of his well-intentioned interference in our affairs. Mom is no help, as you can bet she will always see things from his point of view rather than from ours. Overall, though, he's a wonderful dad and I assure you I wouldn't trade him for anyone in the world. The following is how Michael Stone looks back on that day's competition. In my mind's eye,In my mind's eye I can see every detail of that pole vault. The bar was set at a new height. As Iheard the crowd groan,I knew my competitor had failed to clear it.It was time for my mind with anxiety.I was tense and my palm began to sweat . I tried to shake off the tension , but was unsuccessful. At the critical moment, I remembered my mothe's advice to breathe deeply and brought myself under control . Then I was off , up and away, Soaring like an eahle , just as I did in my recurring dreams. The thump of my landing brought me back to earth. I had done it! This was no mere tantasy, but the real thing . All the sweat and hard work had paid off.Friends were rushing to congratulate me and I was surrounded by numerous clicking cameras of the media. Isn't it strange how chance can play such a large part in what we become? If Carolyn hadn't stumbled into that engineering course, she would never have become an engineer. At the time she did not know the first thing about anything mechanical. But when it comes to hard work, she is no slacker. She threw herself into study and joined in the project to make a hybrid vehicle. She admits that she often found studying math difficult, but she gritted her teeth and got on with it, working on the premise that math is a hard subject for most people. Girls, she argues, are no more at a disadvantage in this respect than boys. Nonetheless, she still had moments of panic when she found making progress particularly difficult. Carolyn concludes that we should not allow cultural expectations to limit our horizons, for we are far more flexible in what we can achieve than they would imply. With the Internet we can escape into another world at the click of a button. For many this virtual world is a dream come true. They find they can do away with the daily routines and stay inside for weeks and everything from home. Other, however, may find the virtual world a nightmare . It is especially annoying when the Internet connection is slow and everything crawls at a snail’s space. The computer does not take in your messages nor does it spit out data . Still others, who get the virtual world, may find communicating face-to-face too emotional and unbearable. At times they feel this so strongly that they have to flee from real human contact, hurrying to get back on line to the comfort and safety of a less demanding world.
