Lesson 48 Supper with the Bradshaws   Title Lesson 48 Supper with the Bradshaws Teaching aims Knowledge 1. To learn words about gift giving. 2. To know the Chinese tradition of gift-giving. 3. To learn about some tips of giving presents. Ability 1. To practice the skills of reading, speaking and writing. Emotion To realize it isn’t always easy to give and receive gifts. Project Content Aims Teaching procedures Step1: Eliciting the background information. 1. When would you like to receive gifts? What gifts would you like to get? Why? 2. How do you react when you receive a gift you don’t like? 3. When your family visits another, what do you usually take as a gift? Activate what they have already known about giving gifts Step2: Present the new words Present the new news by answering the questions and reading pictures. What is the Chinese tradition of giving and receiving gifts? What should we react if we receive a gift that we don’t like? Who would you like to give a toy gun as a gift? Why? Who would you like to give a doll as a gift? Why? Introduce the new words to the students and make them think about the properness when they give a present. Step3: Practice using the new words Practice by filling the gaps. Provide the practice for using the new words. Step 4. Skimming Have the students try to get the main ideas of the two emails by answering the following questions. Email One: Why did they get a gift they didn’t like? Email Two: Why did Danny give a gift Debbie didn't like? Practice the skill of skimming. Step5: Read aloud Organize the students to read the two emails aloud and check if they can do that. Make the students get familiar with the language. Step 6: Dialogue making Ask the students to turn one of the emails to a dialogue. They can make some changes if they like. Ask two pairs to show the dialogues later. Make the students re-understand the text and practice speaking. Step 7 Extensive reading A extra article about gifts is provided on the ppt and some gaps should be filled. Most of the missing words are related to the main idea of the article. Provide extra reading exercises and get the real meaning of receiving a gift. Step 8 Writing Ask the students to write about one time when they receive a gift that they don’t like. They should write by answering the following questions. 1. Who gave you the gift? 2. When did you get the gift? 3. Why didn’t you like the gift? 4. What was your reaction? Practice the skill of writing. Step 9: Homework Research about the tradition of gift-giving in one country outside China. Make a poster about it. And get ready to present it in the next class. Raise the students’ awareness of the cultural differences.
