C. Adams (教名与中间名均缩写)。称某 人为Mr.时,则称Mr.Paul Adams或Mr. Adams. 英美人姓名的一个有趣现象就是他们有一部分姓氏产生于职业名称。如: 铁匠姓Black Smith;木匠姓 Carpenter;裁缝姓Taylor;屠户姓Butcher;磨坊主 姓 Miller;面包师的姓就是Baker。还有一部分姓氏是由祖辈的姓氏转化而来。 这类名字后往往加上-son充作姓氏。如:Johnson; Robinson; Willson及Woodson 等。 高三英语上册Unit3《A good teacher》 Lesson 11 Step 1 Revision 1 Get the Ss to retell the story on SB page 10. Use the questions in Wb Lesson 10, Ex. 1 to help them. 2 Tell the Ss that the class took some food on their picnic. Get the Ss to guess the kinds of food: chicken, oranges, tomatoes, apples, bananas, etc. Make a list on the Bb. Step 2 Presentation Talk about fruit and other food on the Bb (using real objects, wall charts or drawing simple pictures) in this way: I like apples a little, but I like bananas very much. I prefer bananas to apples. Explain the meaning of prefer (=like more)。 Repeat, using I like…… a little, but I like…… very much. I prefer…… to…… for other items of food. Write down the words and sentences on the Bb. Step 3 Drill Point to two items of food. Get the Ss to use the structure, and words written on the Bb, like this: T: (points to pork) Ss: I like pork a little. T: (points to chicken) Ss: But I like chicken very much. I prefer chicken to pork. After drilling the structure with several items, ask the Ss to make up true sentences about their own preferences. Step 4 Presentation Teach this dialogue: A: Which do you prefer, apples or bananas, B: I prefer apples to bananas. I think apples are more delicious than bananas. When the Ss can grasp the structure, add another line to the dialogue: A: I agree. /I agree with you. /I don't agree (with you)。 Step 5 Listening SB page 11, Part 1. Speech Cassette Lesson 11. Books closed~ Ask the Ss What are they talking about, and play the tape of the first dialogue. Help them to answer foreign languages and science. Tell the meaning of science in Chinese. Science refers to biology, chemistry and physics. Note that sc makes /s/ sound (before i or e )。 Ask Which does A prefer, What about B, Then ask individual Ss, Which do you prefer, foreign languages or science, Help them to answer. Books open. Play the tape for the Ss to listen and repeat. Do the second dialogue in the same way. Step 6 Practice SB page 11, Part 2. Point out the more/less structure in the first box. Explain that this is the way of comparing things using long adjectives (usually of 3 syllables or more) and a few adjectives with 2 syllables. We can't say *difficulter or *interestinger. Explain the meaning of new words, such as useful. Tell the Ss useful = use + ful. Revise the word careful (care + ful)。 Make up some sentences from the box and get individual Ss to agree or disagree with you. Then get Ss to make up the sentences. Finally, Ss can work in pairs, making up sentences for their partners to agree or disagree. Step 7 Practice SB page 11, Part 3. Call out a student and demonstrate the first dialogue with him/her in front of the class. If you think the Ss can manage to learn to use much at this stage, get them to practise dialogues like the first one in Part 3 in pairs, using the substitute words in the box. Get two pairs to act out their dialogues. Step 8 Workbook Wb Lesson 11. Choose the exercises that suit the needs of your Ss. In Ex. 1, Ss must make sure that the answer they choose fits the words of the sentence. For instance, in the first sentence, the word than tells us that the answer is B (more difficult than)。 The answers for Ex. 1 are: 1 B, 2 C, 3 B, 4 A, 5 B, 6 C. Ex. 2 provides more oral and written practice of the target structures. Ex. 3 is quite difficult. Do this exercise if time permits. The Ss need to pay close attention to the words around the blanks and to ensure that their answers make sense. The answers for Ex. 3 are: A: as; B: more, more; C: agree, art, as, more; D: with, more, mo re; B: more, foreign, foreign, more; A: language, as. Homework Complete the Workbook exercises. Finish Ex.2 and write a dialogue in the exercise book. Step 4 Presentation Explain big smile with a gesture or a picture. Point out that not so wet as is another way of saying not as wet as. See if the Ss can guess the meaning of other new words, such as sweep (use a gesture to help them guess)。 Translate except and excuse into Chinese. Revise the word luck before teaching lucky and luckily. Give some examples to show the meaning of except, e.g. We go to school every day except Sunday. It means We don't go to school on Sunday. Explain that I find it very difficult means that the speaker has problems with maths. Step 5 Presentation Make a list on the Bb: science, English, music. Use these lists to present more/the most structures and to get the Ss to practise using them. Repeat with less/least. Then get the Ss to make up their own lists and to write a more/most sentence and a less/least sentence. Step 6 Checkpoint 3 Go through the grammar points in Checkpoint 3. Discuss any problems that the Ss have. Practise saying the “useful expressions” and make sure the Ss understand the meanings of the expressions. Step 7 Test Tell the Ss I will say an adjective. You have to write down a whole sentence using the comparative form. For instance, I will say:“delicious” You write: I think a banana is more delicious than an apple. Tell the Ss This is a Russian story. It comes from Russia. Russia is a country, to the north of China and Mongolia. What's its name in Chinese, Help the Ss to answer. Ask Beijing is the capital of China. What's the capital of Russia, (Moscow) Say This story is about a man who lived in a tall building in Moscow. He liked living there. It was usually very quiet, and he could see the park from his window. There was one problem for him. That is he couldn't sleep well. Read the story quickly and quietly and find out why he couldn't sleep. Use the gesture to show the meaning of quiet. Say Be quiet~ and Now read the story quietly. Then let the Ss read the story to "I won't do it again." The teacher controls the time. Encourage the Ss to find the answer quickly. Then ask Did the man downstairs sleep well the next evening, Ask the Ss to finish reading the last two paragraphs and find the answer. Play the tape of the dialogue again for the Ss to listen and repeat. Explain Nothing difficult. = Please talk about an easy subject. Pay attention to the position of the adjective(placed after nothing), for example, nothing easy, nothing difficult. Note the use of should = must or need and could =can (possibility). The sentence Yes, do please. is an emphatic(strong)way of saying Yes, please talk about English names. You can give more examples, e.g. May I sit here? Yes, do please. (=Yes, sit here please.) Get the Ss to practise the dialogue in pairs. Step 4 Reading SB page 2. Let the Ss read the passage to find the answer to the question(James). Ask these questions orally: How many names do most English people have? What is Jim's full name? What is his family name? What are his given names? (Given names are the names that parents choose for their child.) Why did his parents choose the name James? Why do people call him Jim? Explain the meaning of for short. Discuss Chinese names: What do Chinese people call each other for short? (e.g. Hong-Hong). Explain any other difficulties in the text: point out the phrase both of before a pronoun (we can say both my parents or both of my parents, but we must say both of them.) Step 5 Workbook Wb Lesson 2. For Ex. 1, get the Ss to read SB Lesson 2 again and answer the questions orally in pairs. Check the answers with the whole class. Exx. 2 and 3 can be done individually. Ss can check their answers in pairs. The answers for Ex. 2 are: 1 B, 2 A, 3 B, 4 C, 5 A. Then let them practise the dialogue in pairs. See if any pairs can act out the dialogue in front of the class. Get them to change the names to David William Lewis and Catherine Mary Jones. Step 4 Practice SB page 3. Part 2. Point out the full and short forms of names. Present and drill the structure Is (Thomas) a boy's name? Yes, it is. Repeat with other boys' names. Then use girls' names: Is Linda a boy's name? No, it isn't. Then drill using girls' names and boys' names, like this: T: Is Linda a boy's name? Ss: No, it isn't. T: Is Thomas a boy's name? Ss: Yes, it is. T: Is David a girl's name? Ss: No, it isn't. etc. Practise the other question forms and answers in the same way. Then let the Ss practise in pairs. Ss practise the dialogue in pairs. Then they act out the dialogue using other English names. Present the second dialogue in the same way. See if the Ss can guess the meaning of Of course. = Certainly. If necessary, give them in Chinese. Ss can act out this dialogue using their own names. Step 6 Workbook Wb Lesson 3. For Ex. 1, do an example with an individual student before Ss work in pairs. Tell the Ss to look at the dialogues on SB page 3, Part 3 when they write the answers to Ex.2. Step 5 Read and act Briefly revise the Simple Past Tense. Remind the Ss of the use of did questions and negative statements. Do the Friday dialogue (Part 2) in the same way. Remind the Ss that Teachers' Day came on Tuesday, so we are now using the past tense to talk about it. Ask the Ss: What did you do on Teachers' Day? Step 6 Checkpoint 1 Go through Checkpoint 1. Revise the forms of each tense and discuss when they are used, e.g. : Simple Present: habit, personal facts (I'm 15. I go to„ Middle School). Get the Ss to ask you about any other problems they have in this unit. Practise saying the“useful expressions.” Step 7 Test (See TB Appendix, page 215.) Step 8 Workbook Wb Lesson 4, Ex. 3. The answers are: are listening, is, are going, buy, want, is, don't like, don't buy, think, is, is. For Ex. 4, revise the phrases in the box and get the Ss to make up some new dialogues.
