Writing the Conclusion
In the conclusion, you will reexamine the hypothesis. Then determine if the hypothesis is supported or rejected based on the data that is collected. You will explain your findings or data, discuss questions that may have developed while performing the experiment, and suggest ways to change the project if you wanted to perform future investigations on this topic. The conclusion is one of the most important sections of the science fair report. Don’t use the first person. It is written in third person, in past tense. Instead of saying,” then I
measured the temperature of the water”, say “the temperature of the water was then
measured” Your conclusion should be at least 2 paragraphs in length.
Paragraph 1
1. The Purpose
EX: The purpose of this experiment was to determine if the air pressure in a basketball had an effect on how high the basketball ball bounced.
2. Restate step 2 of the results section. Don’t forget to use units.
Only describe the data that was collected. Don’t explain the data using the terms higher,
more or fewer.
3. Summarize the data.
Discuss any trends or relationships that you observed in the graph/s or data tables. You can now explain the data using terms such as higher, lower or more, etc. Determine if the data shows a positive trend, negative trend or no trend. Examples of Trend
, As the number of apples in the bag increases, the weight of the apple bag also
tends to increase. So, the scatter plot shows a positive trend.
As the supply of an item increases, the price of the item decreases and as the
supply decreases, the price of the item increases. So, the scatter plot follows a
negative trend.
, It can be observed that as the temperature increases, the number of points
scored in the game tends to increase or decrease without any relationship. So,
the scatter plot follows no trend.
Paragraph 2
4. State whether or not the hypothesis was supported.
5. In several sentences, try to explain your data.
Try to use concepts that you learned about in the background research. Use words like. “it appears, it seems or it is possible’’…don’t say it must be true or this proves”.
Ex: A possible reason that a whole tablets dissolves slower in water is because a larger tablet has less surface area exposed to the water. A crushed tablet has more surface area exposed to water.
6. Describe any lack of controls, sources of error or equipment errors.
Ex: Changes in the data could have been caused by differences in the temperature of the water. The temperature of the water was not measured during each trial. 7. Suggest ways to change the project if you wanted to perform future investigations on this topic.
Ex: Additional investigations could be conducted that measured the temperature of the water.
