3. Hardware and Software requirements
CHOICE-Dr. emulator is designed to operate on IBM PC compatible Pentium or better class systems.
To take advantage of the emulator features, you have to install the software tools (for example, C-
compiler, assembler, linker, debugger and other option tools) on a host PC.
You can download C-compiler from our homepage, too.
Following items are the requirements.
As you know the LPT ports are disappearing and it will be removed totally. So we are supporting
USB converter board for old version CHOICE-Dr. users. If you purchase and upgrade debugging
S/W, it works same to new CHOICE-Dr. which adopted USB only.
①. It works on IBM PC (Pentium or higher) or its compatible machine.
②. It works on MS-Windows NT4 / 2000 / XP / 2003 or higher operating system.
It does not work on MS-Windows 95 / 98 / ME anymore.
③-1. Old version CHOICE-Dr. requires a printer port (LPT1 or LPT2, LPT3).
③-2. Old version CHOICE-Dr. requires a USB port with USB converter.
③-3. New version CHOICE-Dr. requires a USB port only.

II. Setup CHOICE-Dr. hardware
This chapter describes the procedures for installing CHOICE-Dr. emulator and useful information for
using the emulator.
1. Steps for Installing Hardware
The following steps should be kept to install your CHOICE-Dr. emulator hardware. If you have
already installed CHOICE-Dr. emulator system, you can skip this chapter.
1-1. Setup EVA board
Carefully attach an EVA board to the emulator.
CHOICE-Dr. can be used for emulating
different target processors by simply changing
the EVA board. Disconnect power, before
changing the EVA board.
The EVA boards are identified by its name on
the top of the board. To determine which MCU
is supported by the individual EVA boards.
1-2. Setup Oscillator
You can use emulation clock one of 1, 2, 4, 8MHz without any additional H/W. Because CHOICE-
Dr. can supply these clocks itself.
But, if you want to use the other clock frequency, you have to use external clock source on EVA
board.
Plug the can-type oscillator into the socket marked EXTOSC on the EVA board. You can not use
2pin or 3pin crystal / resonator.
When set to external, the clock is supplied from the external canned oscillator on the EVA board,
and the canned oscillator should be plugged in the EVA board before power up the emulator.
By setting CLOCK in the debugger software, you can select the internal clock or the external clock
for the source clock of the emulator. (Refer to the Debugger manual.)
CHOICE-Dr.
EVA BOARD Board Name
ex) EVA81C1B/D REV 1.1
Note: The clock pin, XIN, on the User POD is disconnected from the
emulator, so you can’t supply the external clock through above pins.
Note : CHOICE-Dr. is not compatible with previous ICE CHOICE-Jr..
So, you can not use CHOICE-Jr. ’s EVA board for CHOICE-Dr. .

1-3. Connect User Cable
Connect one end of the User cable to the EVA board at the connector marked J-USER, and secure
the connector with mounting lever. Connect the other end of this cable to the connector on the User
POD.
1-4. Connect User POD to Target system
Plug the User POD into the MCU socket on the target system.
1-5. Connect PC Interface Cable
Connect one end of the PC Interface cable (25pin print cable) to the parallel port on the host PC.
And connect the other end of the cable to the 25pin female parallel port connector to the CHOICE-Dr.
emulator.
The emulator system is now completely installed and ready for use.
2. Power On/Off Sequences
Read this chapter carefully and do its sequence. Or not your target system or CHOICE-Dr. or
sometimes your PC is (are) damaged permanently.
2-1. Power on sequence
Power up the system in the following sequence to prevent damage to any of the sub-system parts or
user target application parts:
1) Boot up your PC.
2) Apply power to the emulator.
CHOICE-Dr. has built-in regulation to 5.0 volts, so you insert the circular plug of the AC adapter
provided into the receptacle marked POWER on the emulator.
You can choose one of two input voltage range of the AC adapter by adjusting the switch on
the adapter and the factory default setting is AC 220 volts.
Also CHOICE-Dr. has built-in protection diode for input DC voltage, so you never mind about
the polarity of the AC adapter leads.
When you power up the emulator, the red LED is turned on which is (are) placed the main H/W
and EVA board.
3) Turn on your target application system or circuit.
You have to check your power circuit or system is connected properly, or not it is very
dangerous to your system and CHOICE-Dr. too.
Note: Be sure to match the pin number #1 mark of the User POD with the pin
number #1 of the micro-controller socket on the target board.
ABOV Semiconductor
CHOICE-Dr Hardware manual - 9
There are two ways for applying power to the target system.
a) General recommend
In this case, the target system has its own power source. It means emulator and target system
power supplier is separated.
CHOICE-Dr. is emulated by the internal power source which is regulated from DC 15 volts to
DC 5 volts. Target system is operated by its power source.
The VDD pin on the User POD is disconnected from the emulator through the User Cable, so
there is no collision of the power between the target system and the emulator.
b) Simple target system
In small application, you can use emulator power to your target system.
If you connect V_USER pin on the EVA board to +VCC on the target system, CHOICE-Dr.
share the internal power source to the target system.
In this case, you keep in mind the following facts.
The target system should be developed and worked on DC +5 volts.
(The emulator and the target system have same power voltage level.)
The current consumption of your target system should be less than 400mA. Or not
CHOICE-Dr. would be hanged because of its lack of power.
2-2. Power off sequence
1) Turn off your target system first
This is VERY important to prevent emulator from electrical damage.
2) Turn off CHOICE-Dr.
3) Host PC power off is not necessary. This is no matter.
Note: If your target system’s voltage is larger than target MCU’s operation
voltage, the EVA chip on the EVA board may be damaged.

3. Reset control
3-1. Reset emulator
When you power on CHOICE-Dr. emulator, all hardware (include the EVA chip) of the emulator are
initialized. Also, you can initialize the emulator by pushing the RESET button on the EVA board.
3-2. Reset EVA chip
There are three methods as following.
Push the RESET button on the EVA board.
In this case, the emulator is also initialized.
Select the function from the debugging software.
Refer to the Debugger manual.
Input from the target system, electrical reset signal to the reset pin on USER POD.

III. EVA boards & accessories
1. Features
This chapter describes EVA board and its option switch, and POD series.
We supply SDIP, DIP, QFP type POD(s) only.
We do not recommend using QFP type POD, because it is very expensive and it is one time
expendable supply. Its price is 3 ~ 4 times expensive than CHOICE-Dr. base system.
The other package type POD(s) are not delivered to customer. (ex: SOP, SOJ, PLCC, etc. )
If you want to use these package type POD, contact 3rd party companies.
All PODs opened VDD and XIN pins. Many of PODs have switch which control to connect /RESET,
XOUT pins. /RESET pin is connected pull-up register on the EVA board.
Example : SDIP / DIP type PODs
