新世界与风中奇缘的比较
Comparison between the Color of the Wind and the New World
The Color of the wind is the first cartoon adapted by real history which was
produced by Disney and released in 1995. The heroine was an Indian princess —
Pocahontas, her legendary life was the story of the household in the United States. This cartoon narrated a story that she saved a British explorer John Smith, and how she defused a war between the Indians and the Whites. The story took place before long the New World was discovered. A British group of brave pioneers under the lead ship of in the Governor Rayleigh and the Captain John Smith led down to the new world to seek for gold. John Smith was attracted by Pocahontas’ beauty and explained
to her the reason of Rayleigh’s coming. Pocahontas told Smith that the people there
had never seen gold. At that time, Rayleigh could not dig gold and had begun to fight against the local tribes to capture gold. When Smith knew this, he decided to stop the war and depute the hatred between the Whites and the locals.
The film emphasized on the integration of nature and respect between populations. It ended that Pocahontas chose to stay at home to lead their people. However, injured John Smith came back to London, leaving a regretful ending. People in the cartoon could be divided into good man or bad man. Good men represented the modern thought “protect nature, protect animals”. The bad men
represented those who plunder of the resources by hook or by crook.
Similarly, The New World which is an adventure, historical and crazy journey, is a real version of The Color of the Wind. It presents a vivid image. It is a story of the17th century European settlers to conquer America, conquer the Indian tribes. Unlike The Color of the Wind, it paid much attention to Pocahontas and Smith’s love,
but this love promotes the development of the plot and attracts more audiences’ eyes.
During the film, Indian culture represented conforms to the nature, the respect to nature and doing no harm to nature. It was a traditional cultural way of life; and the white man represented modern civilization and way of life which is opposition to the nature.
The theme of colonization in early American literature
The development of Colonial period literature
The generation of American literature less than four hundred years of history, it is the latest literature produced by great nation. Its causes are various, including the political, economic, social, and philosophy of the inevitable outcome .It is the mirror of the American continent history.
The early colonial literature are mostly tendentious works, they are published by colonists in the British press, issue an object for the European mainland people. These works recorded colonists life experience, describe the "new world" of the geographical environment, local conditions and customs, Indian life, hoping to arouse people's attention and to join the ranks of the colonists. The first work to describe the Colonial life was written by John Smith, called A True Relation of Virginia. John Smith was a colonial governor of Virginia; he wrote more than ten works about the exploration and development of North American in his life.
During the development of colony ,there are lots of learned people, such as the puritans priest, was the creation of high value of literature works, but they are not professional writers and their works including diaries, travel notes, epistles, essays, history, poetry, biographies, autobiographies and some prose works, especially for the pilgrims.
The characteristics of the colonial period literature
During the colonial period, one theme of literature is Puritanism. In order to promote Puritanism, Puritan ministers preach in various occasions to affect the general congregation and standardize their behavior. For example, John Cotton, as one of the most famous Puritan pastor in the New England had published two Sermons “The Way of Life” (1641) and “A treatise of the Covenant of Grace” (1654). In these two sermons, Cotton elaborated the origin of Puritanism, requesting they all followed the god.
American Puritanism was one of the most enduring shaping influences in American. It has become, to some extent, so much a state of mind, rather than a set of tenets, so much a part of the national cultural atmosphere that the Americans breathe. Without some understanding of Puritanism, there can be no real understanding of American culture. The mainstream of American culture is deeply affected by Puritanism. The ethnocentrism of the dominant white Anglo Saxon Protestant increases some racial problems in the immigrant country.
Although colonial literatures have different characteristics, Puritanism is the theme of colonization in early American literature reflected in the diary and autobiography about mental development. It guides people's behavior and inner world. The sermon based on people's spiritual value and belief has become one of the most popular literatures and the form of Puritan literature. Its logical structure and simple language reflects the moral ideal of Puritan Aesthetics and form the colonial literature in early America.
