3 Omission ofWords无 Omission of Words Omission, just like amplification, is one of the useful techniques use in the translation. We try to make our translation more expressive and explicit by omission. It can be classified as the following three: 1. Omission of the Repeated Words As English is greatly different from Chinese in syntax, what is regarded as a natural or indispensable form of repetition in Chinese may be regarded as superfluous or even a stumbling block in English. 我们必须坚持社会主义道路,坚持人民民主专政,坚持共产党的领导,坚持马列主 义、毛泽东思想。 We must adhere to the socialist road, the people’s democratic dictatorship, the Communist Party’s leadership and Marxism-Leninism and Mao Zedong Thought. 他总是喜欢夸大事实,高的说得更高,低的说得更低。 Everything was on a large scale for him, the highs were higher, the lows lower. 2.Omission of Category Words Most of the category words are conceptional nouns with rather abstract meaning. But they are commonly used in Chinese.
