Struggling in the US? Move to China!
I graduated from the university with a degree of civil engineering. It is a good field but my heart was not in it. I wanted to be an actor or work in the entertainment industry……living a creative life. My choice of civil
engineering was really a mistake but I realized too late. As soon as I graduated, I moved straight to Los Angeles --- the home of the film and television industry!
For three years, I tried to get a job in that field. I often worked as an extra in movies and TV shows --- standing in the background while actors are in the foreground. This was fun for a while, but I wanted a real acting job, where I was speaking! Sadly, in Los Angeles, there is too much competition. Every race and age is represented: old, young, black, white, Asian, and thousands of blondish-red haired Midwestern types like me. Being an extra couldn’t make enough money for me to live in LA. I had to do something else for money.
After three years of trying, I gave up my dream of being an actor and started a different career. I then tried network-marketing, but in the end, that failed. Seven years after graduating from college, I was still in debt, still searching for a satisfactory life. I decided to go back to civil engineering.
However, I was starting to get very disappointed with my life. Why is life not like what I expected? I expected to have made a lot of money, gotten married, with a house and nice cars, kids, time freedom, etc. Millions of people lead lives with their dreams shelved, existing but not really living. I want my life to be different, more
satisfactory, more alive. America was not providing that for me…
In addition, America was too expensive --- always worrying about money was a headache. I wanted a life filled with adventure, romance, friendships, successes, and dreams realized.

Unlikely though it seems, the potato promoted economic development by underpinning(支持)the industrial
revolution in England in the 19th century. It provided a cheap source of calories and was easy to grow, so it liberated workers from the land. Potatoes became popular in the north of England, as people there specialized in animal farming and home industry, while farmers in the south concentrated on wheat production. By a happy accident, the concentrated industrial activity in the areas and a potato-driven population boom provided enough worker for the new factories. Friedrich Engels even declared that the potato was equal of iron for its “historically revolutionary role”.
The potato promoted free trade by contributing to the end of Britain’s Corn Laws, which restricted imports of grain into the United Kingdom in order to protect domestic wheat producers. Landowners supported the laws, since cheap imported grain would reduce their income, but industrialists were against them because imports would drive down the cost of food, allowing people to spend more on produced goods. Eventually it was not the arguments against the Corn Laws that led to their end --- and more’s the pity. It was the tragedy of the Irish potato
famine of 1845, in which 1 million Irish lost their lives when the potato crop on which they lived died. The need to import grain to relieve the situation in Ireland forced the government to change its position.
This paved the way for free trade in other areas, which became British policy. As the duke of Wellington complained at the time, “Rotten potatoes have done it all.”
The UN has declared 2008 the International Year of the Potato. It hopes that greater awareness of the goodness of potatoes will contribute to helping to reduce poverty, improve food security and promote economic development.

A clique is a group of friends who hang out together and act in similar ways. Cliques are common feature of the teen years. Members of a clique usually have certain things in common. For example, they might all be good students. Membership in a clique is limited. Not everyone who wants to belong can join.
Cliques can have a positive or negative influence. Because most teens have a strong need to belong, they want to feel that they fit into a group. Cliques can help them meet this need. Sometimes teens feel unsure of themselves, and they use a clique to gain approval of what they wear or how they act.
Cliques can become harmful, however, if they pressure members to behave the same way as the group that may damage their health. Cliques may discourage members from making their own decisions, presenting their own opinions, or having other friends who aren’t accepted by the clique. Cliques may even pressure members to
act in ways that go against their individual values and beliefs, such as lying to parents or teachers. Cliques can also hurt people outside the group. For example, members might make fun of a teen who isn’t in the clique.
If you find yourself under this type of pressure from a clique, here are some actions you can take to improve your situation.
? Suggest other activities. Offer ideas that don’t involve hurting others or putting anyone at risk.
? Find new friends. If staying in the clique is becoming a negative experience, you will be better off with new friends.
67. Why do teens want to be a member of a clique?
A. Because it is popular with teens. B. Because it meets teens’ need of belonging.
C. Because it is where teens can be themselves.
D. Because it provides an opportunity for them to be away from their parents.
68. Why can cliques be harmful?

A. He is very supportive to it. B. He is strongly against it. C. He is not against it, though he doesn’t like it.
D. He is not against it. However, he has some worry about it. 70. Which of the following would be the best title of the passage? A. Teen’s Value B. Teen’s Cliques C. Teen’s Problems D. Social Behavior

Ban Ki-moon was made the 8th Secretary-General of the United Nations. In his speech at the ceremony of his taking office, he thanked all the Member States for placing confidence in him, and also expressed his deepest respect and appreciation to all the leaders and people of the Member States for their strong support.
His remark about the former Secretary-General, who he said had guided their Organization into the 21st century and had made the UN truly vital to peace, prosperity and human dignity around the world, was particularly impressive. Mr. Ban Ki-moon stated in his speech that he had already made up his mind to build upon the already-made achievements of the UN.
The new Secretary-General thinks the UN is needed now more than ever before. The UN’s major task in the previous century was to keep countries from fighting each other. In the new century, it is very clear that the UN’s most important task is to strengthen the inter-state system so that humanity may be better served. We need competent and responsible states to meet the needs of “we the peoples” for whom the UN was created. And the world’s peoples will not be fully served unless peace, development and human rights, the three pillars of the UN,
are advanced together with great efforts and equal determination.
As the new Secretary-General, he is not as proud as people thought he might be. He said he was far from perfect and he would need the support, cooperation and trust from all the Member States. And he faithfully promised to serve them well, with all of his heart and to the best of his abilities.
There is also something exciting he said about young people. It’s his hope that young boys and girls of today will grow up knowing that the UN is working hard to build a better future for them. As Secretary-General, he will hold their hopes and hear their demands.
Main aspects in Ban Ki-moon’s speech
?to the Member States for feeling (72)______ of him and being supportive Expressing his ?to the former Secretary-General for the (73) ______ he has made to the (71) ______ UN

One possible version:
The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games are walking towards us, taking a big step. Now how to grow up along with Olympic Champions has become a hot topic and the highlight of our concern.
Recently a heated discussion on this topic was held in our class.
We all agree that Olympic Champions have much in common. They are strict with themselves, always working hard to be excellent. As representatives of the Olympic spirit, they show respect for everyone, competitors, judges, and the media. Besides, they never give up. They will keep on trying after failure until finally they succeed.
Most of us cannot become Olympic champions. Yet we can learn something from them. First, we should set up our goals and go definitely after them. We can learn to concentrate and keep a good state of mind in front of failure.
Like the world champions, we are also members of our society. I think we should also take up our own roles. Whatever we are and whatever we do, we should spare no effort to contribute the little that we can to our society.
In a word, the Olympic Slogan “One World, One Dream” expresses the voice of our class ---
share a beautiful earth, share modern civilization and create a better future hand in hand.
