1.BriefintroductionofTuYouyou2.Malaria research- artemisinin3.InspirationBriefintroductionTuYouyou, bornin1930inNingbo,hasbeenapharmacologistattheChinaAcademyofChineseMedicineSciencesince1965,engaginginresearchofthecombinationofTCMandWM.TCM:traditionalChinesemedicine WM:westernmedicineHerdiscoveryofartemisininanditstreatmentofmalariaisregardedasasignificantbreakthroughof tropicalmedicine inthe20thcenturyandhealthimprovementforpeopleoftropicaldevelopingcountriesinSouthAsia,Africa,andSouthAmerica.Forherwork,Tureceivedthe2011LaskerAwardinclinicalmedicineandthe2015NobelPrizeinPhysiologyorMedicine.In11December（BeijingTime），TuYouyoureceivedher2015NobelPrizeinPhysiologyorMedicineinSweden.TuisthefirstChineseNobellaureateinphysiologyormedicineandthefirstcitizenofthePeople'sRepublicofChinatoreceivetheNobelPrizeinnaturalsciences.“TheProfessorofThreeNos”:nopostgraduatedegree,nostudyorresearchexperienceabroad,notamemberofanyChinesenationalacademies.Malaria research- artemisininArtemisinin,adrugthathassignificantlyreducedthedeathrateofmalariapatients,andsavedmillionsoflivesacrosstheglobe,especiallyinthedevelopingcountry.Tustartedher  malariaresearchinChinawhentheCulturalRevolutionwasinprogress.Inearly1969,Tuwasappointedastheheadoftheproject,namedProject523researchgroupatherinstitute.Sheandhercolleaguesexperimentedwith380extractsin2,000candidaterecipesbeforetheyfinallysucceeded.In1971,TuwasinspiredbymanyancientclassicworksonTCM. Usingapioneeringlow-temperaturemethod,Tuandherteamfirstextractedartemisininfromasweetwormwoodplant(青蒿). Forthesakeofdrugsafety,shehadpersonallytakingtests，whichledtoherliverpoisoning,butshestillkeptonworking,regardlessofpickingsamplesinthewild,orintheindoorexperimentstudy.InspirationAchievingmodernizationofTCMthroughscienceandtechnology.Tu‘ssuccessshowsthatTCMhastoembracemoderntechnologiesandlaboratorytoolsand,moreimportant,sticktotheessenceofthetime-honoredmedicalscience,practicinginnovationwhenusingTCMtheories.Tu'sNobelPrizewillpromptmorebasicscientificresearchintoancientTCMtextsandwaystoexploreresearchfindings.EffectivecombinationofTCMandWM.ThereareenormoustreasureinTCM,soitcanplayamoreimportantroleinmodernmedicine.Inaddition,asimpleapplicationofWesternmedicalstandardstoTCMwon'twork,ChinesemedicinedevelopmentneedsmoreopeninclusiveofChineseandWesterntomakebreakthroughs.Improvingtheinnovationmechanism.Chinashouldfocusoncultivatinggoodacademicresearchenvironmentandscientificresearchmechanismtoencouragemorescientists.Chinaspendsmorethan1billionyuan($156million)annuallyonTCM-relatedresearch,andthatinvestmentshouldbefurtherstrengthened.Thankyou
