ECG. EEG, images of organs, recordings of voice etc. Measured data requires further interpretation and processing. Statistical learning techniques provide very powerful tools for data and signal modeling and classification. This lecture discusses a special type of techniques allowing for building of ensembles of models. It can be shown that a carefully chosen ensemble of diverse models can outperform any of the individual models in the set. We consider models which range from linear regression, neural networks, perceptrons, RBF networks, SVM and others. Special toolkit has been built in Matlab and C++ to implement these methods and build ensembles. The toolkit has been applied in modeling of ECGs, classification of viral data, searching solutions in drug design problems. Bio-Sketch: Maciej Ogorzalek is Professor and Head of the Department of Information Technologies at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow (the oldest university in Poland funded in 1364). He holds also an appointment as Chair Professor of Bio-signals and Systems at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University under the distinguished scholars scheme. His research and teaching interests include nonlinear systems circuit theory with an emphasis on dynamics and complex phenomena and chaos, neural networks, nonlinear signal analysis and processing, biometrics and biomedical signal and system analysis and modeling. Author or co-author of over 250 technical papers and one book (Chaos and Complexity in Nonlinear Electronic Circuits - World Scientific). He held several numerous visiting positions: Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne, The Technical University of Denmark, Artificial Brain Systems Laboratory, RIKEN, Japan; Electronics Research Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley. Centro Nacional de Microelectronica, Sevilla, Spain, Kyoto University, Japan (Senior JSPS Award) and Goethe University Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany (Hertie Guest-professor). Dr Ogorzalek is an IEEE Fellow (1997), Recipient of the IEEE Guillemin-Cauer (Best Paper) Award 2002. Distinguished Lecturer of the CAS Society 2001-2003. Award of the Minister of National Education of Poland; National Education Medal-Poland. Founding member of the CASS Technical Committee on Biomedical Circuits and Systems. Member of the Editorial board of the International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos. 3 Keynote Speech 2: Francis Chin Session Chair: Yonghong Peng Title: A Clustering-Based Approach for Finding Motif Pairs from Protein Interaction Data Abstract: Finding motif pairs from a set of protein sequences based on the protein-protein interaction data is an important, but difficult computational problem. Tan et al. proposed a solution to this problem. However, the scoring function used in their approach is not adequate and their approach is also not scalable. It may take days to process a set of 5000 protein sequences with about 20,000 interactions. Later, we proposed an improved scoring function and faster algorithms for solving the same problem. But, that model used is complicated. The exact value of the scoring function is not easy to compute and an estimated value is used in practice. In this talk, a better model and a fast heuristics algorithm to capture the significance of a given motif pair based on a clustering notion are described. The algorithm is able to locate the correct motif pair in the yeast dataset in about 45 minutes for 5000 protein sequences and 20,000 interactions. Moreover, we derive a lower bound result for the p-value of a motif pair in order for it to be distinguishable from random motif pairs. The lower bound result has been verified using simulated data sets. Bio-Sketch: Professor Chin received the B.A.Sc. degree from the University of Toronto, Canada, in 1972, and the M.S., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Princeton University, in 1974, 1975, and 1976, respectively. Since 1975, he has taught at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, University of California, San Diego, University of Alberta, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and University of Texas at Dallas. He joined the University of Hong Kong (HKU) in 1985, where he is the Chair of the Department of Computer Science and was the founding Head of the department from its establishment until December 31, 1999. Between 1992-1996, he served as the Associated Dean of Graduate School. He is now the Associate Dean of Engineering. Prof. Chin was elected to the grade of IEEE Fellow in 1996 and served on the IEEE Fellow Evaluation Committee in 1998. Professor Chin is currently serving as Manager Editor of the International Journal of Foundations of Computer Science and is also on the editorial boards of several journals. He has served on the program committees and as conference chairman of numerous international workshops and conferences, including the conference chair of the 5th Asia-Pacific Bioinformatics Conference (APBC2007). Professor Chin's research interests include design and analysis of algorithms, on-line algorithms, and bioinformatics. Keynote Speech 3: Roderic I. Pettigrew Session Chair: Dongguang Li Title: Bioengineering and Biomedical Imaging in 21st Century Healthcare Abstract: The landscape of biomedical research has already begun a significant change in this decade, consequent to the evolving merger of the physical sciences and the biological sciences. At the intersection of these scientific fields is the promise of new fundamental discoveries and significant progress in the understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie disease. This is critical to realizing the vision of a 21st century transition from the prior century’s reactive medical paradigm focused on curing symptomatic disease to a proactive one that practices more preemptive medical care. In the biotechnology arena, progress in biosensors, biomaterials and tissue engineering, drug and gene delivery systems and devices, genetically based probes, image guided minimally invasive methods, multi-scale and multimodality imaging and micro-fluidics and nanotechnology is providing quantitative tools for new insights, and remarkably improved diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to disease. This promises improved health care through the development and application of emerging technologies at the interface of the life and quantitative sciences. 4 Bio-Sketch: Roderic I. Pettigrew, Ph.D., M.D., is the first Director of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering at the NIH. Prior to his appointment at the NIH, he was Professor of Radiology, Medicine (Cardiology) at Emory University and Bioengineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Director of the Emory Center for MR Research, Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta , Georgia . Dr. Pettigrew is known for his pioneering work at Emory University involving four-dimensional imaging of the heart using magnetic resonance (MRI). Dr. Pettigrew graduated cum laude from Morehouse College with a B.S. in Physics, where he was a Merrill Scholar; has an M.S. in Nuclear Science and Engineering from Rennselear Polytechnic Institute; and a Ph.D. in Applied Radiation Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was a Whitaker Harvard-MIT Health Sciences Scholar. Subsequently, he received an M.D. from the University of Miami School of Medicine in an accelerated two-year program, did an internship and residency in internal medicine at Emory University and completed a residency in nuclear medicine at the University of California , San Diego . Dr. Pettigrew then spent a year as a clinical research scientist with Picker International, the first manufacturer of MRI equipment. In 1985, he joined Emory as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Fellow with an interest in non-invasive cardiac imaging. Dr. Pettigrew's awards include membership in Phi Beta Kappa, the Bennie Award (Benjamin E. Mays) for Achievement, and being named the Most Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Miami . In 1989, when the Radiological Society of North America celebrated its 75th Diamond anniversary scientific meeting, it selected Dr. Pettigrew to give the keynote Eugene P. Pendergrass New Horizons Lecture. He has also served as chairman of the Diagnostic Radiology Study Section, Center for Scientific Review, NIH. He has been elected to membership in the Institute of Medicine and fellowship in the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, and the Biomedical Engineering Society. Keynote Speech 4: Jing Bai Session Chair: Dongguang Li Title: Progress on Fluorescence Molecular Tomography Abstract: In recent years, Fluorescence Molecular Tomography (FMT) has developed rapidly as a promising tool for in vivo small animal imaging. Fluorescence Molecular Tomography has ability to resolve 3D spatial distributions of fluorescence probes associated with molecular and cellular functions. There are various imaging systems and algorithms proposed and developed. The recent progress of Fluorescence Molecular Tomography technology will be overviewed. The special progress on imaging system construction, photon migration modeling, and the corresponding reconstruction methods will be discussed. Bio-Sketch: Jing Bai obtained the M.S. and Ph.D. from Drexel University, Philadelphia, in 1983 and 1985. From 1985 to 1987 she was a Research Associate and Assistant Professor with the Biomedical Engineering and Science Institute of Drexel University. In 1988, 1991, and 2000 she become an Associate Professor, Professor, and Cheung Kong Chair Professor at Biomedical Engineering Department of Tsinghua University, Beijing, China. Her research activities have included optical molecular imaging, mathematical modeling and simulation of cardiovascular system, optimization of cardiac assist devices, medical ultrasound, telemedicine, and home health care network and home monitoring devices. She has published four books and over 200 journal papers. She is a Fellow of IEEE.
