Passage 1 Questions 36—40 are based on the following passage: Distance education has been called the wave of the future. Our society’s urge to hurry progress has brought this future to the present. The explosive growth in technology has increased our drove to create and design newer technology and has forced the public to demand their institutions keep up. The push to implement distance education may due to the public’s perception that technology is capable of such a program. Proper distance education would require equipment and video are essential for traditional education and should be essential for it’s online counterpart. The technology is available for this two-way communication, but it is extremely expensive and the cost increases by the thousands for every extra mile between the source and the receiver of the signal. The most affordable and available technology today is effective to maximum distance of between 15-20 kilometers. If all of the course participants are required to the within a 15-20 kilometer radius of the information source the distance in distance education is not very far. The futuristic communication technologies would be ideal for proper distance education. It is a screen with two-way communication capabilities of both video and audio. This, and other science fiction technologies, may have infiltrated societies consciousness and thus been accepted as truth just as UFOs. Science fiction has been identified as the best way to predict the future and indeed companies have introduced prototype models at trade shows that we may see on the mass market in the future. Distance education is another victim of science fiction taken as reality. Has technology advanced to a point where distance education is a viable alternative to traditional education? The technology for rudimentary distance education may be available in industrialized metropolitan areas, but as if yet it is not viable in most areas. Calgary is considered a large metropolitan Canadian city, yet high-speed Internet connections via cable lines are not available to homes located on or near the cities boundary. Until access to high-speed connections is available at a reasonable price, school boards and governing bodies should suspend the push to distance education and begin to prepare for its inevitable future. 36. The key difference between distance education and traditional education lies in ______. A. distance education is the wave of the future B. traditional education have no enough technology to back up C. distance education has no limitation on both time and distance of the receiver D. traditional education required a two-way communication 37. The futuristic communication refers to _______. A. two-way real time audio and video B. a screen with two-way communication capacities C. high-speed internet connections D. both B and C 38. The disadvantage of traditional education is that ______. A. it requires a two-way real time audio and video B. its cost would increase for every extra receiver admitted C. it could not catch the pace of the highly-developed technology D. it would not be available for receivers beyond the distance of 20 kilometers 39. The problem that would probably prevent distance education from a quick development is that ______. A. the technology supporting distance education is not available to all areas B. the distance education has a high requirements on language skills C. school board could not accept the fact that distance education should replace traditional education D. those areas outside big cities find traditional education more effective than distance education 40. It can be inferred from the passage that _______. A. science fiction indirectly promote the development of distance education B. distance education is totally copied from sciences fictions C. distance education, like UFO, is something existed only in science fictions D. the public learn about distance education only through science fictions Passage 2 Questions 41—45 are based on the following passage: The destruction of our natural resources and contamination of our food supply continue to occur, largely because of extreme difficulty in affixing legal responsibility on those who continue to treat our environment with reckless abandon. Attempts to prevent pollution by legislation, economic incentives and friendly persuasion have been met by lawsuits, personal and industrial denial and long delays –not only in accepting responsibility, but more importantly, in doing something about it. It seems that only when government decides it can afford tax incentives or production sacrifices is there any initiative for change. Where are industry and our recogn ition that protecting mankind’s great treasure is the single most important responsibility? If ever there will be time for environmental health professionals to come to the frontlines and provide leadership to solve environmental problems, that time is now. We are being asked, and in fact, the public is demanding that we take positive action. It is our responsibility as professionals in environmental health to make the difference. Yes, the ecologists, the environmental activists and the conservationists serve to communicate, stimulate thinking and promote behavioral change. However, it is those of us who are paid to make the decisions to develop, improve and enforce environmental standards, I submit, who must lead the charge. We must recognize that environmental health issues do not stop at city limits, county lines, state or even federal boundaries. We can no longer afford to be tunnel-visioned in our approach. We must visualize issues from every perspective to make the objective decisions. We must express our views clearly to prevent media distortion and public confusion. I believe we have a three-part mission for the present. First, we must continue to investigate and understand the link between environment and health. Third, we must be able to communicate technical information in a form that citizens can understand. If we can accomplish these goals in this decade, maybe we can finally stop environmental degradation, and not merely hold it back. We will then be able to spend pollution dollars truly on prevention rather than on bandages. 41. We can infer from the first two paragraphs that the industrialists disregard environmental protection chiefly because ______. A. they are unaware of the consequences of what they are doing B. they are reluctant to sacrifice their own economic interests C. time has not yet come for them to put due emphasis on it D. it is difficult for them to take effective measures 42. The main task now facing ecologists, environmental activists and conservationists is ______. A. to prevent pollution by legislation, economic incentives and persuasion B. to arouse public awareness of the important of environmental protection C. to take radical measures to control environmental pollution D. to improve the quality of life by enforcing environmental standards 43. The word “tunnel-visioned” most probably means ______. A. narrow-minded B. blind to the facts C. short-sighted D. able to see only one aspect 44. Which of the following, according to the author, should play the leading role in the solution of environmental problems? A. Legislation and government intervention. B. The industry’s understanding and support. C. The efforts of environmental health professionals. D. The cooperation of ecologists, environmental activists and conservationists. 45. Which of the following is TRUE according to the last paragraph? A. Efforts should be exerted on pollution prevention instead of on remedial measures. B. More money should be spent in order to stop pollution. C. Ordinary citizens have no access to technical information on pollution. D. Environmental degradation will be stopped by the end of this decade. Passage 3 Questions 46—50 are based on the following passage: All over the world mention of the British education suggests a picture of the “public schools”, and it suggests in particular the names of certain very famous institutions—Eton, Oxford and Cambridge; but people do not always realize what place these institutions occupy in the whole educational system. Oxford and Cambridge are universities each having about 12,000 students out of a total of over 250,000 students at all British universities. Eton is a public school, and the best known of the public schools, which, in spite of their names, are not really public at all, but independent and private secondary schools taking boys from the age of thirteen to eighteen years. The public schools in reality form a very small part of the school system of secondary education of Great Britain; only about one out of forty English boys goes to a public school, and one out of 1,500 to Eton. Apart from the so-called public schools there is a complete system of state primary and secondary education, which resembles in its general form the state education in most other countries. All children must, by law, receive full-time education between the ages of five and sixteen. Any child may attend, without paying fees, a school provided by the public authorities, and the great majority attend such schools. They may continue, still without paying fees, until they are eighteen. The public schools, although unimportant numerically, have been England’s most peculiar and characteristic contribution to educational methods, and they have an immense influence on the whole of English educational practice and on the English social structure. 46. What was the purpose of the author to write the passage? A. It was to tell people the difference between Eton on the one hand and Oxford and Cambridge on the other. B. It was to tell people what the public schools in Great Britain are like. C. It was to tell people something about British educational system. D. All of the above. 47. How much full-time schooling must a British child-receive and when does it begin? A. Eleven years starting from the age of five. B. Seventeen years starting from the age of five. C. Five years starting from the age of thirteen. D. Thirteen years starting from the age of five. 48. Which of the following British child is allowed to go to a public school in Great Britain? A. A thirteen-year-old girl. B. A five-year-old girl C. A thirteen-year-old boy. D. A five-year-old boy. 49. Why does the author say that the so-called public school Eton is not “public”? A. Because no girls are admitted in Eton. B. Because parents have to pay fees for their children at Eton. C. Because it belongs to the few, numerically unimportant school in Britain. D. Because only one fortieth of British boys go to Eton. 50. The mention of British education outside Great Britain suggests a picture schools in that country probably because ______. A. the whole of English educational practice has been greatly influenced by them B. some of them are as famous as the universities of Oxford and Cambridge. C. these public schools are quite different in form from the public schools in any other countries D. there are famous schools like Eton among them Passage 4 Questions 51—55 are based on the following passage: Green-space facilities are contributing to an important extent to the quality of the urban environment. Fortunately it is no longer necessary that every lecture or every book about this subject has to start with the proof of this idea. At present, it is generally accepted, although more as a self-evident statement than on the base of a closely-reasoned scientific proof. The recognition of the importance of green space in the urban environment is the first step on he right way, this does not mean, however, that sufficient details are known about the functions of green-space in towns and about the way in which the inhabitants are using these spaces. As to this rather complex subject I shall, within the scope of this lecture, enter into one aspect only, namely the recreative function of green space facilities. The theoretical separation of living, working, traffic and recreation which for many years has been used in town and country planning, has in my opinion resulted in disproportionate attention for forms of recreation far from home, whereas there was relatively little attention for improvement of recreative possibilities in the direct neighborhood of the home. We have come to the conclusion that this is not right, because an important part of the time that we do not pass in sleeping or working, is used for activities at and around home. So it is obvious that recreation in the open air has to begin at the street-door of the house. The urban environment has to offer as many recreation activities as possible, and the design of these has to be such that more obligatory activities can also have a recreative aspect. The very best standard of living is nothing if it is not possible to take a pleasant walk in the district, if the children cannot be allowed to play in the streets, because the risks of traffic are too great, if during shopping you can nowhere find a spot for enjoying for a moment the nice weather, in short, if you only feel yourself at home after the street-door of your house is closed after you. 51. According to the author, the importance of green space in the urban environment _______. A. is still unknown B. is being closely studied C. is usually neglected D. has been fully recognized 52. The theoretical separation of living, working, traffic and recreation has led to _____. A. the disproportion of recreation facilities in the neighborhood B. the location of recreation facilities far from home C. relatively little attention for recreative possibilities D. the improvement of recreative possibilities in the neighborhood 53. The author suggests that the recreative possibilities of green-space should be provided ______. A. in special areas B. in the suburbs C. in the neighborhood of the house D. in gardens and parks 54. According to the author, green-space facilities should be designed in such a way that ______. A. more obligatory activities might take on a recreative aspect B. more and more people might have access to them C. an increasing number of recreative activities might be developed D. recreative activities might be brought into our homes 55. The main idea of this passage is that ______. A. better use of green-space facilities should be made so as to improve the quality of our life B. attention must be directed to the improvement of recreative possibilities C. the urban environment is providing more recreation activities than it did many years ago D. priority must be given to the development of obligatory activities V.
