Passage 6
(江西省抚州一中2009届高三第四次模拟考试)
In the doorway of my home, I looked closely at my 23-year-old son, Daniel. In a few hours
he would be flying to France to 36 a different life. It was a transitional(过渡的) time in
Daniel's life. I wanted to 37 him some words of significance. But nothing came from my lips, and this was not the 38 time I had let such moments pass.
When Daniel was five, I took him to the bus stop on his first day of kindergarten. He asked,
―What is it going to be like, Dad? Can I do it?‖ Then he walked 39 the steps of the bus and
disappeared inside. The bus drove away and I said nothing. A decade later, a similar 40
played itself out. I drove him to college. As I started to leave, I tried to think of something to say

to give him 41 and confidence as he started this new stage of life. Again, words 42
me.
Now, as I stood before him, I thought of those 43 opportunities. How many times
have I let such moments 44 ? I don't find a quiet moment to tell him what they have 45
to me. Or what he might 46 to face in the years ahead. Maybe I thought it was not necessary to say anything.
What does it matter in the course of a lifetime if a father never tells a son what he really thinks of him? 47 as I stood before Daniel, I knew that it did matter. My father and I loved each other. Yet, I always 48 never hearing him put his 49 into words. Now I could
feel my palms sweat and my throat tighten. Why is it so 50 to tell a son something from the
heart?
My mouth turned dry, and I knew I would be able to get out only a few words clearly. ―Daniel,‖ I said, ―If I could have picked, I would have picked you.‖ That's all I could say. He
hugged me. For a moment, the world 51 , and there were just Daniel and me. He was saying something, but tears misted my eyes, and I couldn't understand what he was saying. All I was 52 of was the stubble(短须) on his chin as his face pressed 53 mine. What I had said to
Daniel was 54 . It was nothing. And yet, it was 55 .

Passage 10
(江苏省南京十三中2009届高三第三次模拟考试)
In 1982, Steven Callahan was crossing the Atlantic alone in his sailboat when it struck something and sank. He got into a life boat, but his supplies were 36 . His chances of
surviving were small. 37 when three fishermen found him 76 days later, he was alive—much 38 than he was when he started, but alive.
His 39 of how he survived is fascinating. His cleverness — how he 40 to catch
fish, how he evaporated(蒸发)sea water to 41 fresh water — is very interesting.
But the thing that 42 my eye was how he managed to keep himself going when all hope seemed lost, and there seemed no 43 in continuing the struggle. He was starved and 44
worn-out. Giving up would have seemed the only possible choice.
When people 45 these kinds of circumstances, they do something with their minds that gives them the courage to keep going. Many people in 46 desperate circumstances 47
in or go mad. Something the survivors do with their thoughts helps them find the courage to carry
on 48 difficulties.
―I tell myself I can 49 it,‖ wrote Callahan in his book. ―Compared to what others have been through, I‘m fortunate. I tell myself these things over and over, 50 up courage…‖
I wrote that down after I read it. It 51 me as something important. And I‘ve told myself
the same thing when my own goals seemed 52 off or when my problems seemed too terrible. regulations, construction scaffolding is safe and reliable, and climbing ladders, lifting Commander 1 established, full-time safety officer 1, responsible for checking the safety guarantee measures, echoed up and down, prevent accidents. 12) traffic pavement in accordance with requirements of the transport sector, and separated by closed isolation barrier, construction and non-construction with barrier isolation. 13) volunteer fire organizations, employees conducting fire prevention publicity and education of the knowledge, skills, and organizational implementation of fire-fighting and emergency evacuation plans and walkthroughs. 8.4.5 specific construction program for safety technology according to the Hebei provincial construction safety inspection rules for the implementation of requirements of the standard, a separate specific construction program for the following 1) scaffold erection, dismantling programme; 2) Foundation support schemes; 3) construction project of template engineering; 4) "three treasures", "four" protection scheme; 5) construction organization design of temporary power supply; 6) installation, demolition of a tower crane programme; 7) lifting operation plan. 8.5 8.5.1 environmental management goals of environmental protection, civilization construction without major environmental pollution accident, waste gas, waste water, noise, dust, solid
And every time I‘ve said it, I have always come back to my 53 .
The truth is, our circumstances are only bad 54 to something better. But others have been through the much worse, that is, in comparison with what others have been through, you‘re
fortunate. Tell this to yourself over and over again, and it will help you 55 through the rough situations with a little more courage.

Each of us fails from time to time. If we are wise, we accept these failures as a 36 part of the learning process. But all too often as parents and teachers we disallow this 37 right to our children.
When I see a child 38 to this kind of pressure, I think of Donnie.

and placed them on his desk.
―See these 49 , Donnie,‖ she continued. ―They belong to Mrs Lindstrom and me. See
how the erasers are 50 , That's because we make mistakes too. But we erase the mistakes
and try again. That's what you 51 learn to do, too.‖
She kissed him and stood up. ―Here,‖ she said, ―I'll leave one of these pencils on 52
desk so you'll remember that everybody makes mistakes, 53 teachers.‖ Donnie looked up with love in his eyes and a smile.
The pencil became Donnie's 54 possession. That, together with Mary Anne's frequent encouragement, gradually 55 him that it's all right to make mistakes—as long as you erase them and try again.

Passage 22
(浙江省金华一中2008年5月高考模拟试卷)
We come by business naturally in our family. Each of the seven children in our family worked in our father‘s store. 21 we worked and watched, we learned that work was about more than 22 and making a sale.
One lesson stands out in my 23 . It was shortly before Christmas. I was in eighth grade and was working evenings, straightening the toy section. A little boy, five or six years old, came in. He was 24 a brown torn coat with dirty sleeves. His shoes were scuffed and his one shoelace
was torn. The little boy looked poor to me — too poor to 25 to buy anything. He looked 26
the toy section, picked up this item and 27 , and carefully put them 28 in their place.
Dad came down the stairs and walked over to the boy. His steel blue eyes 29 and the
dimple(酒窝) in his cheek stood out as he asked the boy what he could do for him. The boy said
he was looking for a Christmas 30 to buy his brother. I was impressed that Dad treated him with
the same respect as any adult. Dad told him to take his 31 and look around. He did.
After about 20 minutes, the little boy carefully picked up a toy 32 , walked up to my dad and said, ―How much for this, Mister?‖
―How much you got?‖ Dad asked.
The little boy held out his hand and 33 it. His hand was creased(起皱) with 34 lines of
dirt from holding his 35 too tightly. In his hand 36 two dimes, a nickel and two pennies—27 cents. The price on the toy plane he‘d picked out was $3.98.
―That‘ll just 37 it,‖ Dad said as he 38 the sale. Dad‘s reply still 39 in my ears.
When the little boy walked out of the store, I didn‘t notice the dirty, worn coat or the single torn
shoelace. What I saw was a happy child with a 40 .

Passage 26
(山东省聊城市2008年高三年级模拟(三))
Teenagers at one German school are learning how to achieve happiness alongside other
traditional 36 such as mathematics and languages.
The class sits in a circle with their eyes shut and they count from one to ten: someone starts,
the 37 voice comes from the far right, a third from the other side.
The aim of the game is to 38 for an opportunity to shout out the 39 without
clashing(相撞)with another voice or leaving a pause. On the first try, 40 of the young
Germans try to be first, while a few are too shy to join in. But by the fifth 41 , they develop a

Unlike schools in other nations, German schools do not usually have school sports teams or

The Willy Hellpach School in Heidelberg is the first in the nation to develop a happiness
45 . It is 46 for 17-19-year-olds preparing for university entrance exams.
―The course isn‘t there to make you happy as 47 ,‖ Ernst Fritz-Schubert, the school principal, warned pupils, ― 48 rather to help you discover the ways to become happy.‖
Cooking a meal together will be one of the class 49 , along with improving body language under the 50 of two professional actresses.
The course is taught for three periods a week. 51 the happy subject, the pupils themselves insist it is no laughing matter.
―In the first period, we had to each say something 52 about another member of the class and about ourselves. No laughing at people or teasing,‖ said Fanny, 17.
The message: self-esteem(自尊)improves 53 too.
Research by the school shows it is not the first to start happiness classes: they also 54 at
some US universities, but are mainly based on positive thinking, using 55 from studies of
depression.
―That would be too one-sided for us. We want to show how decent(好的)food or exercise
can help too,‖ the principal said.

Passage 27
(吉林省实验中学2007届高三第四次模拟考试)
I ran into a stranger as he passed by. ―I‘m so sorry!‖ was my reply. Then he said. ―Excuse me
too——I wasn‘t 21 watching for you.‖ We were very polite, this stranger and I. Then we went 22 our way after saying goodbye.
But at 23 , a different story is told. How we treat our loved ones, young and old. Later in
the kitchen, as I 24 our meal, my daughter walked up to me , very still. When I turned, I
25 knocked her down. ―Get out of the way!‖ I shouted with a frown. She stepped away silently, with her little heart 26 . I didn‘t realize how harshly I had spoken.
That night, when I lay 27 in bed, God‘s quiet voice spoke to me, ―While 28 with a
stranger, you are calm and polite, but with those you love, you are QUICK to excite—Go look
around on the kitchen floor, you will find some flowers there by the 29 . Those are the
flowers she brought for you. She 30 them herself—pink, yellow, and your favorite blue. She stood there quietly, and you never saw the 31 in her eyes.‖
By this time, I felt sad and small and now my own tears had begun to fall. I quietly went and
knelt by her 32 , ―Wake up, my dear,‖ I said. ―Are these the flowers you picked up for me?‖
She smiled, ―I found them out by the tree. I 33 them in a napkin, just for you. I knew you‘d
like them, especially the 34 .‖ I said, ―I am so sorry that I missed them today—and I 35
have fussed(发牢骚)at you that way.‖
And she whispered, ―Mommy, that‘s Ok—I still love you 36 .‖I hugged her and said, ―I
love you too, and I love the flowers.‖
Do you know that: if you die tomorrow, the 37 you are working for could easily replace you in a matter of days. But the family you leave 38 will feel the loss for the rest of their lives. And come to think of it, we pour ourselves more into our 39 than into our families—an
unwise investment indeed.
Remember that 40 =(F)ATHER—(A)NO—(M)OTHER—(I)—(L)OVE
—Y(OU).
